Enquête Archives Ouvertes COUPERIN 2017 : résultats de l’enquête
2017

The microbial community of sub-surface sediment of a chronically contaminated SIC
2015
Hydrocarbons (HC), especially high molecular weight HC, are trapped in the sediments for a long time, making the benthic system a permanent pollution source, with several effects on the biota. Sediment bacterial communities play a significant role in the degradation of contaminants, both under aerobic and anaerobic conditions. In this work we focused on the bacterial communities of sediments (5-10 cm below surface), of a Site of Community Importance, the Priolo Bay, in Central Mediterranean Sea. The bay is situated in proximity to the Augusta Harbour, affected for decades by pollution from industrial and petrochemical plants. The microbial communities of sediments from six stations on two t…
El patrimonio arquitectónico industrial valenciano. Algunos ejemplos
2004
Biological effects of inorganic arsenic on primary cultures of rat astrocytes
2010
It is well established that inorganic arsenic induces neurotoxic effects and neurological defects in humans and laboratory animals. The cellular and molecular mechanisms of its actions, however, remain elusive. Herein we report the effects of arsenite (NaAsO2) on primary cultures of rat astrocytes. Cells underwent induction of heat shock protein 70 only at the highest doses of inorganic arsenic (30 and 60 microM), suggesting a high threshold to respond to stress. We also investigated arsenic genotoxicity with the comet assay. Interestingly, although cells treated with 10 microM arsenite for 24 h maintained >70% viability, with respect to untreated cells, high DNA damage was already observed…
Using machine learning to disentangle LHC signatures of Dark Matter candidates
2019
We study the prospects of characterising Dark Matter at colliders using Machine Learning (ML) techniques. We focus on the monojet and missing transverse energy (MET) channel and propose a set of benchmark models for the study: a typical WIMP Dark Matter candidate in the form of a SUSY neutralino, a pseudo-Goldstone impostor in the shape of an Axion-Like Particle, and a light Dark Matter impostor whose interactions are mediated by a heavy particle. All these benchmarks are tensioned against each other, and against the main SM background ($Z$+jets). Our analysis uses both the leading-order kinematic features as well as the information of an additional hard jet. We explore different representa…
Road Detection for Reinforcement Learning Based Autonomous Car
2020
Human mistakes in traffic often have terrible consequences. The long-awaited introduction of self-driving vehicles may solve many of the problems with traffic, but much research is still needed before cars are fully autonomous. In this paper, we propose a new Road Detection algorithm using online supervised learning based on a Neural Network architecture. This algorithm is designed to support a Reinforcement Learning algorithm (for example, the standard Proximal Policy Optimization or PPO) by detecting when the car is in an adverse condition. Specifically, the PPO gets a penalty whenever the virtual automobile gets stuck or drives off the road with any of its four wheels.Initial experiments …
Predicting hospital associated disability from imbalanced data using supervised learning.
2019
Hospitalization of elderly patients can lead to serious adverse effects on their functional capability. Identifying the underlying factors leading to such adverse effects is an active area of medical research. The purpose of the current paper is to show the potential of artificial intelligence in the form of machine learning to complement the existing medical research. This is accomplished by studying the outcome of hospitalization of elderly patients as a supervised learning task. A rich set of features characterizing the medical and social situation of elderly patients is leveraged and using confusion matrices, association rule mining, and two different classes of supervised learning algo…

Robust Neutrino Constraints by Combining Low Redshift Observations with the CMB
2009
We illustrate how recently improved low-redshift cosmological measurements can tighten constraints on neutrino properties. In particular we examine the impact of the assumed cosmological model on the constraints. We first consider the new HST H-0 = 74.2 +/- 3.6 measurement by Riess et al. (2009) and the sigma(8)(Omega(m)/0.25)(0.41) = 0.832 +/- 0.033 constraint from Rozo et al. (2009) derived from the SDSS maxBCG Cluster Catalog. In a ACDM model and when combined with WMAP5 constraints, these low-redshift measurements constrain Sigma m(v) < 0.4 eV at the 95% confidence level. This bound does not relax when allowing for the running of the spectral index or for primordial tensor perturbations…
