Why Study Online in Upper Secondary School? Qualitative Analysis of Online Learning Experiences

In Finland, online learning has become more common in recent years. In this study, we examined why adult students chose to study online for upper secondary school. The research also focused on the support needed for learning from a special education perspective. Both qualitative and quantitative data were collected using an electronic questionnaire. In total, 58 students responded. Data were analyzed qualitatively using the content analysis technique. The findings indicate that the main reasons for online studies are similar in Finland to those found internationally: flexibility of timetables, the student’s health condition, and family situations. Changes in achievement values from primary to lower secondary school among students with and without externalizing problems

This study examined the effect of students' externalizing problems on changes in values that they attach to math across the transition from primary to lower secondary school. Data pertaining to externalizing problems and to intrinsic, attainment, and utility values in math were gathered using the self-ratings of students in Grades 6 and 7. The analysis involved a comparison between students who reported persistent high externalizing problems before and after the transition (n = 63; 59% boys) and those who had low or non-existent externalizing problems before and after the transition (n = 1352; 50% boys). Student‐athletes who strive for success in high‐level sports while pursuing upper secondary education may be prone to sport and school burnout. This study examined the co‐developmental dynamic of sport and school burnout in Finnish adolescent student‐athletes (Ntime 1 = 391; Ntime 2 = 373) across the first year of upper secondary school using cross‐lagged structural equation modeling (SEM). AbstractSuccessfully integrating elite sports with education requires motivation to commit oneself to both domains. This study examines the development of and gender differences in adolescent athletes’ task values for school and sports across the upper secondary school years. A total of 391 adolescents (aged 15–16 at the beginning of the study) were followed four times during sports upper secondary school. Tässä artikkelissa tarkastelen peruskoulun yhdeksännen luokan oppilaiden vieraan kielen oppimismotivaatioprofiilien ja kieltenopetuksessa saatujen arvosanojen yh-teyttä heidän perusopetuksen jälkeisiin jatko-opiskelusuunnitelmiinsa. Lukiolaiset ovat myös voineet osallistua valtakunnalliseen puheviestinnän päättökokeeseen vuodesta 2000 lähtien. Symptoms of psychological ill-being and school dropout intentions among upper secondary education students : a person-centered approach

A person-centered approach was used to identify the profiles of symptoms of psychological ill-being among Finnish upper secondary education students (N = 2889); to examine whether gender and educational track (i.e., academic or vocational) are associated with these profiles; and to investigate the role of profiles in school dropout intentions. Using latent profile analysis, one asymptomatic profile (normative, 79.2%) and three symptomatic profiles (internalizing symptoms, 9.1%; externalizing symptoms, 9.1%; and comorbid symptoms, 2.6%) were identified. Historian opetuksen yhteydessä on viimeisten kahden vuosikymmenen aikana puhuttu erityisesti opetuksen suuntaamisesta sisältöjen opettamisesta historian taitojen ja demokraattisena kansalaisena toimimisen suuntaan. Tavoitteet edellyttävät myös käytäntöjen muuttumista. Tässä artikkelissa tarkastellaan lukion historian opetusta opetuskokeilun kautta. Kokeilussa hyödynnettiin pelillisyyttä sekä historiallista empatiaa.
