The leading disconnected contribution to the anomalous magnetic moment of the muon

The hadronic vacuum polarization can be determined from the vector correlator in a mixed time-momentum representation. We explicitly calculate the disconnected contribution to the vector correlator, both in the $N_f = 2$ theory and with an additional quenched strange quark, using non-perturbatively $O(a)$-improved Wilson fermions. All-to-all propagators are computed using stochastic sources and a generalized hopping parameter expansion. Combining the result with the dominant connected contribution, we are able to estimate an upper bound for the systematic error that arises from neglecting the disconnected contribution in the determination of $(g-2)_\mu$.

Validity of power functionals for a homogeneous electron gas in reduced-density-matrix-functional theory

Physically valid and numerically efficient approximations for the exchange and correlation energy are critical for reduced density-matrix functional theory to become a widely used method in electronic structure calculations. Here we examine the physical limits of power functionals of the form $f(n,n')=(n n')^\alpha$ for the scaling function in the exchange-correlation energy. To this end we obtain numerically the minimizing momentum distributions for the three- and two-dimensional homogeneous electron gas, respectively. Universal extra dimensions andZ→bb¯

We study, at the one loop level, the dominant contributions from a single universal extra dimension to the process $\stackrel{\ensuremath{\rightarrow}}{Z}b\overline{b}.$ By resorting to the gaugeless limit of the theory we explain why the result is expected to display a strong dependence on the mass of the top quark, not identified in the early literature. A detailed calculation corroborates this expectation, giving rise to a lower bound for the compactification scale which is comparable to that obtained from the $\ensuremath{\rho}$ parameter. Finite renormalization effects in the induceds¯dHvertex

The finite renormalization contributions to the s-bard-italicH-italic vertex are examined in the standard model. They are explicitly shown to cancel each other among diagrams, so that the lower bound on the Higgs-boson mass M-italic/sub H-italic/>325 MeV is not affected by such effects.

Geometric Origin of the Tennis Racket Effect

The tennis racket effect is a geometric phenomenon which occurs in a free rotation of a three-dimensional rigid body. In a complex phase space, we show that this effect originates from a pole of a Riemann surface and can be viewed as a result of the Picard-Lefschetz formula. We prove that a perfect twist of the racket is achieved in the limit of an ideal asymmetric object. We give upper and lower bounds to the twist defect for any rigid body, which reveals the robustness of the effect. Transverse distribution of beam current oscillations of a 14 GHz electron cyclotron resonance ion source

The temporal stability of oxygen ion beams has been studied with the 14 GHz A-ECR at JYFL (University of Jyvaskyla, Department of Physics). A sector Faraday cup was employed to measure the distribution of the beam current oscillations across the beam profile. The spatial and temporal characteristics of two different oscillation “modes” often observed with the JYFL 14 GHz ECRIS are discussed. It was observed that the low frequency oscillations below 200 Hz are distributed almost uniformly. In the high frequency oscillation “mode,” with frequencies >300 Hz at the core of the beam, carrying most of the current, oscillates with smaller amplitude than the peripheral parts of the beam. Constraints of reduced density-matrix functional theory for the two-dimensional homogeneous electron gas

Reduced density-matrix functional theory (RDMFT) has become an appealing alternative to density-functional theory to describe electronic properties of strongly correlated systems. Here we derive exact conditions for the suitability of RDMFT to describe the two-dimensional homogeneous electron gas, which is the base system for semiconductor quantum dots and quantum Hall devices, for example. Abstract Planktonic foraminiferal biostratigraphy and isotope stratigraphy analyses of Turonian-Maastrichtian deposits have been carried out in the western part of the Kopet-Dagh Basin.
