Helicobacter pylori infection does not affect the early rebleeding rate in patients with peptic ulcer bleeding after successful endoscopic hemostasis…

2003

Background and study aims Eradication of Helicobacter pylori infection can reduce the rebleeding rate of peptic ulcer bleeding in the long term. There are few data on the influence of H. pylori on the rebleeding rate in the acute phase of bleeding however. We therefore prospectively investigated the influence of H. pylori infection on the early rebleeding rate in patients who had undergone successful endoscopic hemostasis treatment for peptic ulcer bleeding. Patients and methods Between January 1996 and November 2000 all patients with peptic ulcer bleeding were evaluated consecutively. The diagnosis of H. pylori infection was made at index endoscopy, using histology and the rapid urease tes…

Pioglitazone in addition to metformin improves erythrocyte deformability in patients with Type 2 diabetes mellitus

2010

The aim of the present study was to compare the effect of PIO (pioglitazone) or GLIM (glimepiride) on erythrocyte deformability in T2DM (Type 2 diabetes mellitus). The study covered 23 metformin-treated T2DM patients with an HbA1c (glycated haemoglobin) >6.5%. Patients were randomized to receive either PIO (15 mg, twice a day) or GLIM (1 mg, twice a day) in combination with metformin (850 mg, twice a day) for 6 months. Blood samples were taken for the measurement of fasting glucose, HbA1c, fasting insulin, intact proinsulin, adiponectin and Hct (haematocrit). In addition, the erythrocyte EI (elongation index) was measured using laser diffractoscopy. Both treatments significantly impr…

Treatment with essential amino acids in patients on chronic hemodialysis: a double blind cross-over study.

1978

Patients on chronic hemodialysis may suffer from a latent protein deficiency, and therapy with essential amino acids has been recommended. In a double blind cross-over study, 13 hemodialysis patients received orally 15.7 g of essential amino acids daily over a 3-month period. Patients were on a liberal diet, containing 1 g of protein per kilogram of body weight per day. Hemodialysis was adequate. Therapy resulted in an increase in urea, uric acid, C3 c complement factor and a fall in C4. Lysine levels increased and phenylalanine fell. Malnutrition could not account for the observed metabolic changes, which are more likely due to uremic metabolic disturbances. A liberal diet of 1 g of protei…

Being an ethnic minority nursing student - A meta synthesis.

2022

Background Our society is characterized by a general globalization and has become more culturally diverse. This diversity is mirrored in nursing education. Purpose The purpose of the meta-synthesis is to identify and synthesize data from primary, qualitative studies of ethnic minority nursing students' experiences in a nursing program. Method Electronic databases, Medline, Embase, and CINAHL, were searched for studies published in English or Nordic languages from 1980 to February 2020. Results The search generated 1070 unique citations, of which 19 articles met the inclusion criteria. The included studies had a total sample size of 255 students, age range 19–50 years. The participants origi…

A case of severe dermatitis in a patient with Polycythemia Vera during cytoreductive therapy

2019

Polycythemia Vera (PV) is a Philadelphia-negative chronic myeloproliferative neoplasm (MPN) mainly characterized by erythrocytosis. In this report we describe a case of severe cutaneous toxicity in patients with PV treated with hydroxyurea. A 72-year-old woman diagnosed with PV with V617F mutation of JAK2 performed more than 10 years before and treated with hydroxyurea plus phlebotomies and low-dose ASA for about 7 years addressed our center for the appearance of serious dermatitis at the face symptomatic for severe itch. The patient underwent a dermatology visit with diagnosis of desquamative dermatitis due to iatrogenic cause related to the use of hydroxyurea. HU was stopped for a month w…

Urea Cycle Metabolites and Atrial Fibrillation or Heart Failure Risk: Two Case-Control Studies in the PREDIMED Trial

2021

OBJECTIVES: To prospectively analyze the associations between urea cycle metabolites and incident atrial fibrillation (AF) or heart failure (HF), and to evaluate the effect of a Mediterranean diet (MD) intervention on such associations. METHODS: We designed two nested case-control studies within the PREDIMED trial, a randomized controlled trial aimed to evaluate the effect of two MD interventions, supplemented with either extra virgin olive oil (EVOO) or nuts, on cardiovascular disease (CVD). Fasting blood samples were collected at baseline and urea cycle metabolites (arginine, citrulline, and ornithine) and methylarginines (asymmetric dimethylarginine/symmetric dimethylarginine ratio (ADMA…

1974

Summary The uptake of allantoine-7- 14 C by moss protonema grown in submerged culture is controlled by light and by the degree of catabolisation within the cell. The rate of uptake was enhanced by the application of ATP + glucose to the medium of a dark grown culture. The degradation products of allantoine-7- 14 C in light grown protonema are allantoic acid and urea. Urea is degraded in the Henseleit-Krebs-cycle to ornithine, citrulline and arginine. Urea is a further source of radioactive CO 2 . In darkness, the single product of allantoine degradation is allantoic acid. Allantoicase is blocked in the dark but the metabolism can be activated by the application of ATP or ATP + glucose to th…
