Abstract Background This multicenter, double-blind phase II study assessed the antitumor activity and toxicity profile of docetaxel with the antiangiogenic multikinase inhibitor sorafenib or matching placebo as a first-line treatment in patients with metastatic or locally advanced HER2-negative breast cancer. Patients and methods Patients were randomized 1:1 to receive docetaxel 100 mg/m2 on day 1 every 3 weeks in combination with sorafenib 400 mg bid or placebo on days 2–18 of each cycle until tumor progression, or unacceptable toxicity. Oh et al report their experience with 1566 metastatic prostate cancer patients treated with luteinising hormone-releasing hormone (LHRH) agonists in the area of Boston, Massachusetts, USA. Of these patients, 79.5% were given antiandrogens (bicalutamide, flutamide, or nilutamide) before the first LHRH agonist dose. The remaining patients (20.5%) did not receive antiandrogens. In all patients, complications appearing within 30 d and attributable to a flare phenomenon (fractures, spinal cord compression, bladder outlet obstruction, exacerbation of pain) were assessed retrospectively. In Alport's syndrome (AS) thinning and splitting of the glomerular basement membrane (GBM) are assumed to be characteristic ultrastructural alterations. Both lesions are, however, non-specific because they can occur in other glomerulopathies. In addition, splitting may be found in non-glomerular structures. It should be emphasized that the characteristic lesion in AS is a result of the widespread combination of thin and split GBM in the same biopsy specimen. Meprin (EC 3.4.24.18) is an oligomeric metalloendopeptidase found in microvillar membranes of kidney proximal tubular epithelial cells. Here, we present the first report on the expression of meprin beta in rat glomerular epithelial cells and suggest a potential involvement in experimental glomerular disease. We detected meprin beta in glomeruli of immunostained rat kidney sections on the protein level and by quantitative RT-PCR of laser-capture microdissected glomeruli on the mRNA level.
