The effects of self-efficacy on computer usage

1995

Abstract This paper examines the effect of self-efficacy, belief in one's capabilities of using a computer in the accomplishment of specific tasks, on computer usage. It introduces an extended technology acceptance model (TAM) that explicitly incorporates self-efficacy and its determinants (experience and organizational support) as factors affecting computer anxiety, perceived ease of use, perceived usefulness and the use of computer technology. A survey of 450 microcomputer users in Finland found strong support for the conceptual model. In accordance with TAM, perceived usefulness had a strong direct effect on usage, while perceived ease of use had indirect effect on usage through perceive…

Bot or not? a case study on bot recognition from web session logs

2018

This work reports on a study of web usage logs to verify whether it is possible to achieve good recognition rates in the task of distinguishing between human users and automated bots using computational intelligence techniques. Two problem statements are given, offline (for completed sessions) and on-line (for sequences of individual HTTP requests). The former is solved with several standard computational intelligence tools. For the second, a learning version of Wald’s sequential probability ratio test is used.

2012

The complexity of data stored in large databases has increased at very fast paces. Hence, operations more elaborated than traditional queries are essential in order to extract all required information from the database. Therefore, the interest of the database community in similarity search has increased significantly. Two of the well-known types of similarity search are the Range (Rq) and the k-Nearest Neighbor (kNNq) queries, which, as any of the traditional ones, can be sped up by indexing structures of the Database Management System (DBMS). Another way of speeding up queries is to perform query optimization. In this process, metrics about data are collected and employed to adjust the par…

Predictors of enhancing human physical attractiveness: Data from 93 countries

2022

People across the world and throughout history have gone to great lengths to enhance their physical appearance. Evolutionary psychologists and ethologists have largely attempted to explain this phenomenon via mating preferences and strategies. Here, we test one of the most popular evolutionary hypotheses for beauty-enhancing behaviors, drawn from mating market and parasite stress perspectives, in a large cross-cultural sample. We also test hypotheses drawn from other influential and non-mutually exclusive theoretical frameworks, from biosocial role theory to a cultural media perspective. Survey data from 93,158 human participants across 93 countries provide evidence that behaviors such as a…

Measuring consumer brand engagement on social media with annoyance as a moderator

2017

Consumer brand engagement (CBE) is indisputably an emerging topic in the marketing literature, yet the amount of research on its antecedents and outcomes is limited. Besides academics, it has also gained traction among practitioners who have started to experiment with new methods to engage consumers with their brands. Most of these marketing efforts have started to take place in social media, as the number of consumers who can be reached with services such as Facebook, Instagram or YouTube is increasing exponentially. While the corporate investments in social media are increasing, many marketing practitioners have trouble reaching the positive outcomes of consumer brand engagement suggested…

2018

Education and vocational training are central institutions in today’s society. They play an important role in guaranteeing people’s social and professional integration. They are also considered strategic pillars of economic growth in “the knowledge society” (CE, 2000). However, despite their basis in democratic values and principles, there are still many inequalities in access and outcomes in both compulsory academic and vocational education. Moreover, because of the increasing flexibility and insecurity of work in the current labor market, a diploma is a necessary, but not sufficient, condition for stable employment. In this context, the rise of Massive Open Online Courses (MOOC) raises qu…

Sociālo tīklu lietošanas paradumu atšķirības latviešu un igauņu jauniešu auditorijā: Valkas/Valgas piemērs

2015

Insights from Operator Interviews

2009

The previous section analysed use of software to improve productivity from a general perspective and provided a quick statistical analysis of software usage to the performance of a CSP. Before conducting elaborated statistical analysis on CSP software usage, we need to gain some insight into operator business and understanding on how operators see the role of software in their business as well as how they acquire software.
