When Venus stays awake, Minerva sleeps: a narrative of female sanctity in eighteenth-century Spain

2021

Written records of confession provide exceptional insight into private histories of women and the gender dynamics that shaped them. The sacrament of confession entailed an implicit inequality between men and women, given that the priest was considered to be shrouded in divine power while the penitent had to submit herself to his moral authority. Nevertheless, confession also offered women the opportunity to express themselves and to discuss and understand their spiritual concerns. Some hoped their confessors would recognize their religious charisma, which would involve an affirmation of individuality, autonomy and personal power. In Spain, we find key information about interactions between …

Deep Emotions, Poor Narratives: On the Iconography of the Retreat ( La Retirada )

2011

The Spanish Civil War and the subsequent border crossing of the Republican population towards France in February 1939 generated a profusion of images of which only a few have become recognizable icons that represent the injustice performed by Franco's victorious army. However, most of these images have circulated without any historical context, thus becoming abstraction rather than historical realities. This article discusses the way the corpus of visual —mostly through film— representations of exile have been used and abused, how they have been "migrating" from one media to another, and hence how they have changed their semantic value and have been use to support different ideological mess…

The Influence of the Avicennan Theory of Science on Philosophical Sufism

2020

Abstract This article discusses the application of the Avicennan theory of demonstrative science on taṣawwuf, or the Divine Science (al-ʿilm al-ilāhī), by members of the Akbarian tradition, particularly Ibn ʿArabī’s (d. 1240) stepson and most influential disciple, Ṣadr al-Dīn al-Qūnawī (d. 1274), and his commentators, among whom the most prominent was Mullā Muḥammad b. Ḥamza al-Fanārī (d. 1431). It aims to find out what kind of relationship was developed between Avicennan logic and Sufism by the two members of the Akbarian school in the post-classical Islamic thought. It also seeks to show that the convergence between different currents of Islamic thought—Sufism and philosophy in this case—…

The nested games of the UK’s EU referendum: ruptures, reconfigurations and lessons for Europe

2021

The 2016 decision by the United Kingdom to withdraw from the European Union was a seminal one for both parties. In this special issue, we consider the extent to which the inter-penetration of the national and the European arenas produced significant opportunities for recasting political action. The nesting of these two levels matters firstly in allowing for the politicisation and mobilisation of domestic actors around European issues and secondly in explaining why seemingly sub-optimal or counter-productive actions are taken. The tensions this generated reached a critical juncture with the referendum, a rupture that highlights the extent to which a nominally second-order vote can have funda…

Remembering and Forgetting, Discovering and Cherishing

2018

The events of the Second World War left considerable material remains in Finnish Lapland, ranging from the remnants of structures that were destroyed in the 1944–45 Lapland War, through to small, portable objects connected to soldiers, prisoners of war and civilians. These material remains have variously been saved and cherished by survivors and their families, disregarded as ‘war junk’, ‘discovered’ by hobbyists exploring the landscape, amassed and exchanged by private collectors, and accessioned into official museum collections. These various processes represent transformations of material culture to take on various meanings and embodiments, depending on the different individuals and orga…

Care and gendered work in reception centers in Finland

2019

PurposeThis paper focuses on how gendered processes of working life are (re)constructed and are also challenged discursively in paid and volunteer care and work in reception centers. « Autonomy in the Dock: Oscar Wilde’s first trial »

2014

The 1895 Wilde trials are usually seen as either the trial of non-normative sexualities or as enabling a definition of…
