Peasants and the Political Culture in Norway (c. 1400–1700)
2016
This chapter looks at the major confrontations between the state and peasants in Norway during the period 1400–1700. These have variously been described as rebellions, riots and insurrections. Indeed, one could argue that none of these were full-scale revolts as such, if by that we mean a massive threat to the regime and social order. The peasants and their leaders would never declare that they were seeking to abolish the regime or attack the king nor that they intended to implement a new social or political order. In most cases, they would address oral or written protests or sabotage the collection of new taxes or other burdens that the state had imposed. Their protests would primarily be …
Hugo Grotius – Individual Rights as the Core of Natural Law
2014
The Dutch humanist Hugo Grotius’ status as an important forerunner of the Enlightenment is well recognized, bolstered by his famous etiamsi daremus-dictum in the Prolegomena of De iure belli ac pacis. Less well known is that Grotius was the first central Protestant thinker to redefine the concept of ius, so that it was understood as individual or subjective rights. His understanding of ius as a personal moral quality, which he subsequently delimits as the expletive justice or perfect right to one’s own (suum), was given a pivotal role in his system of natural law. These concepts of ius and suum, which Grotius differentiates from other rationally derived moral principles, inspired John Locke…
Validating justice climate and peer justice in a real work setting
2016
In this study we tested the validity of justice climate and peer justice, measured as second-order constructs, in a real work setting. First, we investigated the appropriateness of aggregating first-order facets of justice climate and peer justice to work-unit level of analysis. Second, we examined the construct validity of justice climate and peer justice as two different factor structures. Third, we tested the hierarchical structure of justice climate and peer justice as second-order factors. Finally, we examined the predictive validity of second-order factors justice climate and peer justice within a nomological network composed of reciprocity with the supervisor and reciprocity with cow…
Recent results on syntactic groups of prefix codes
2012
International audience; We give a simplified presentation of groups in transformation monoids. We use this presentation to describe two recent results on syntactic groups of prefix codes. The first one uses Sturmian words to build finite bifix codes with a given permutation group as syntactic group. The second one describes a class of prefix codes such that all their syntactic groups are cyclic.
The Process of Pregnancy: Paradoxical Temporalities of Prenatal Entities
2021
AbstractIn this article, we reflect on the particular temporal structure of pregnancies and prenatal entities with the aim to contribute to the field of the sociology of pregnancy. Medical models and technology shape today’s notion of pregnancy as a linear, nine-month developmental process that leads to the birth of a child. Through ultrasound technology and prenatal examinations, prenatal entities have thus historically gained a present ‘being’ as a developing, unborn child. While these ideas undoubtedly greatly influence the participants’ interpretations, a culturalistic perspective on time alone does not do justice to the phenomenon’s lived tensions and the temporal complexity of the phe…
Aksjologiczne aspekty wychowania
2017
Incentives, criminal defence lawyers and plea bargaining
2008
Plea bargaining has become a central feature of criminal procedure in Anglo-Saxon jurisdictions. This paper explores an area seldom discussed in the economic literature on plea bargaining: the influence of the defence lawyer's fee contract on the terms of the bargain. In particular, it uses data from one jurisdiction of the impact on case trajectories of changes in publicly funded defence lawyers’ contracts to test the proposition that the nature of the lawyer's contract influences how cases are managed. An event study methodology on a pooled time-series cross-section data set of case trajectories before and after the change in the nature of the contract is used to examine whether the new p…
Demokratisches Institutionendesign in der Priorisierung und Rationierung von Gesundheitsleistungen
2012
Decisions on priority setting and rationing in health care have both informational and distributional aspects, which is why they require expert knowledge and specialised bodies on the one hand and democratic consent on the other hand. The paper presents normative criteria for the evaluation and empirical categories for the description and comparison of respective bodies. As procedural decisions always have implications for resulting distributional decisions, the bodies charged with priority setting and rationing decisions must be subject to democratic institutional design. Knowledge, perceived effectiveness and qualification of traffic rules, police supervision, sanctions and justice
2017
Road safety is a complex process that not only depends on technical and environmental improvements, but in a major part from human factors. In this sense, recent empirical studies have remarked the need to study the interaction between subject and laws, at the glance of several elements preceding road behavior. This is the case of attitudes, opinions and perceptions in the field of road safety, factors that influence the interaction with issues such as traffic rules, police supervision, penalties and justice in traffic. The objective of this study was to describe the self-rated knowledge and perceptions regarding traffic norms and its interaction with road safety among drivers. For this stu…
