An Interactive Multiple Objective Linear Programming Method for a Class of Underlying Nonlinear Utility Functions

1983

This paper develops a method for interactive multiple objective linear programming assuming an unknown pseudo concave utility function satisfying certain general properties. The method is an extension of our earlier method published in this journal (Zionts, S., Wallenius, J. 1976. An interactive programming method for solving the multiple criteria problem. Management Sci. 22 (6) 652–663.). Various technical problems present in predecessor versions have been resolved. In addition to presenting the supporting theory and algorithm, we discuss certain options in implementation and summarize our practical experience with several versions of the method.

How social network sites and other online intermediaries increase exposure to news

2020

Research has prominently assumed that social media and web portals that aggregate news restrict the diversity of content that users are exposed to by tailoring news diets toward the users’ preferences. In our empirical test of this argument, we apply a random-effects within–between model to two large representative datasets of individual web browsing histories. This approach allows us to better encapsulate the effects of social media and other intermediaries on news exposure. We find strong evidence that intermediaries foster more varied online news diets. The results call into question fears about the vanishing potential for incidental news exposure in digital media environments.

Analysis of the road traffic management system in the neural network development perspective

2019

The research goal of the paper is to present the issues connected with road traffic management systems and to illustrate a management system that uses Intelligent Transportation Systems and neural networks. The use of Intelligent Transportation Systems (ITS) is a method of improving the conditions of communications, making it independent from the development of communications infrastructure. The attributes of neural networks are focused on solving the problems of optimisation, which involve the development of optimal strategies for traffic management. The proposed road traffic management system that uses ITS and neural networks can be applied in prediction of the conditions of communication…

Pricing Policies of Excess Capacity in Make to Order Production Systems

2014

The research concerns a make to order manufacturing environment and two classes of customers who submit orders. The core customers have a contract with the firm at fixed services level (price and due date). The short-term customers submit the orders based on the price set by the firm. In this paper, it is proposed a pricing policy based on fuzzy logic to set the price for the short-term customers. The fuzzy approach captures the state of the manufacturing systems in terms of congestion in order to set the price. The policy proposed is compared to a fixed price, and to a state-dependent policy based on three levels of price. A discrete event simulation environment is used to test the propose…

High-pressure NMR spectroscopy: An in situ tool to study tin-catalyzed synthesis of organic carbonates from carbon dioxide and alcohols. Part 2 [1]

2015

Dialkoxide diorganotin(IV) complexes are known to readily react with carbon dioxide under pressure and they are considered as suitable catalyst precursor models for the direct synthesis of organic carbonates. To gain a better understanding of CO2 insertion processes with Sn-OR bonds, the reactivity of n-Bu2Sn(OCH(CH3)(2))(2) (2) was investigated using high-pressure NMR (HP-NMR) spectroscopy. In deuterated solvents (isopropanol-d(8) and toluene-d(8)) under 50 bar of CO2 pressure at 80 degrees C, Sn-119{H-1} NMR experiments revealed the exclusive formation of an unprecedented tetraorganodistannoxane species, characterized as the bis[diisopropycarbonatotetrabutyldistannoxane] complex, {[n-Bu2S…

Generation Z and Organizational Listening on Social Media

2020

Young people are avid users of social media and have appeared as a powerful force for social change, as shown by the ranks of those who have joined Greta Thunberg in the global climate movement. In addition to challenging political institutions and governments, young people today are also holding the corporate world accountable. To respond to young people’s expectations, brands, and organizations have turned to social media to interact and build relationships with them. However, critics have lamented that these attempts often fail and that young people’s trust in institutions, brands, and organizations continues to decline. This article asks how young people perceive organizational listenin…

Demand for life annuities from married couples with a bequest motive

2006

The aim of this paper is to explain the ‘annuities puzzle’ in greater depth by introducing the bequest motive. It will try to determine whether this motive really is a relevant feature influencing the demand for life annuities from married couples. With this aim in mind, we develop an optimization model of the utility provided by purchasing a life annuity with contingent survivor benefit or a joint survivor life annuity. Our model is based on that first put forward by Brown and Poterba (2000), to which we have added elements from other models, such as Friedman and Warshawsky's (1990) and Vidal and Lejárraga's (2004), which include the bequest motive. This will enable us to calculate the ann…

Analyse de la genèse temporelle des trajectoires scolaires

1989

Analysis of the development of schooling routes in the course of time. - The authors present an empirical analysis of two fundamental questions in the field of knowledge and action : what are the respective parts : 1) of the primary and secondary school ; 2) of educational and institutional phenomena in the explanation of social differences of scolarity ? They conclude with a methodological thinking about the empirical analysis of educational phenomena which needs to take account of time.

PANDEMIE E CONTRATTO SOCIALE. NOTE PEDAGOGICHE SULLA FORMA DEI LEGAMI NEL NOSTRO TEMPO

2021

Several are the crises generated by the pandemic. In each of these crises (health, economic, social, educational...), there are many “breaks” in the “taken for granted” that lead to ask radical questions about human life.In this horizon and according to the approach of phenomenological-hermeneutic fundamental pedagogy, the paper aims at highlighting one of the hypotheses which, starting from modernity, has been very influential: the social contract. In particular, the paper focuses on same consequences that derive from having intended the social contract as model not only of political life but also,of any possible intersubjective bond. Therefore, the paper inquiries on what the ontological …
