HEp-2 Cell Classification with heterogeneous classes-processes based on K-Nearest Neighbours

We present a scheme for the feature extraction and classification of the fluorescence staining patterns of HEp-2 cells in IIF images. We propose a set of complementary processes specific to each class of patterns to search. Our set of processes consists of preprocessing,features extraction and classification. The choice of methods, features and parameters was performed automatically, using the Mean Class Accuracy (MCA) as a figure of merit. We extract a large number (108) of features able to fully characterize the staining pattern of HEp-2 cells. Identification and validation of quasispecies models for biological systems

An identification procedure for biological systems cast as quasi-species models is proposed. Their identification is a challenging problem because of the bilinear dependence on the parameters and their physical constraints. The proposed solution is within the framework of set-membership identification. %The bilinear dependence on parameters of the model and their physical constraints make the present issue challenging. Development and evaluation of image-series for portion size estimation in dietary assessment among adults

AbstractPortion size images are advantageous in dietary assessment. The aim of the present study was to develop and validate new culturally specific image-series for portion size estimation to be used in a new Norwegian version of a British web-based dietary assessment tool (myfood24). Twenty-three image-series of different foods, each containing seven portion size images, were created and validated in a group of adults (n41, 58 % female) aged 19–44 (median 23), out of which 63 % had higher (tertiary) education. Objectives: Presentation and validation of software developed for automated and accurate application of a reference-based algorithm (reference sphere method: RSM) inferring the effective imaging geometry from quantitative radiographic image analysis. Methods: The software uses modern pattern recognition and computer vision algorithms adapted for the particular application of automated detection of the reference sphere shadows (ellipses) with subpixel accuracy. It applies the RSM algorithm to the shadows detected, thereby providing threedimensional Cartesian coordinates of the spheres. Plant (crop and weed) identification is a very active field of research in agriculture since the reinforcement of European laws about pesticide applications for a site-specific management of spraying practices. A new crop/weed simulation model was developed to allow the evaluation of crop/weed spatial identification methods from imaging. Considering multiples agronomic parameters – crop location, weed infestation rate, weed spatial distribution – the first step of this model allows the simulation of an infested crop field. A standard calculation methodology for human doubly labeled water studies.

Summary The doubly labeled water (DLW) method measures total energy expenditure (TEE) in free-living subjects. Several equations are used to convert isotopic data into TEE. Using the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) DLW database (5,756 measurements of adults and children), we show considerable variability is introduced by different equations. The estimated rCO2 is sensitive to the dilution space ratio (DSR) of the two isotopes. Based on performance in validation studies, we propose a new equation based on a new estimate of the mean DSR. Traditional methods for aerosol retrieval and atmospheric correction of remote sensing data over water surfaces are based on the assumption of zero water reflectance in the near-infrared. Another type of approach which is becoming very popular in atmospheric correction over water is based on the simultaneous retrieval of atmospheric and water parameters through the inversion of coupled atmospheric and bio-optical water models.
