Technical-economical evaluation for distributed storage applications. An Italian case study for a medium-scale public facility

2014

Time-of-use energy cost management involves the use of storage by customers to reduce their electricity bills. This can be accomplished by charging the storage during off-peak time periods, when electricity energy prices are low, and discharging it during times when on-peak energy prices are applied. This article addresses the question whether it is economically viable to install medium-scale distributed storage devices in the power system designed to lower the electricity cost for a customer-side application, assuming flexible electricity tariffs. The technical/economical evaluation is carried out referring to Lithium ion (Li-ion), Sodium Sulphur (NaS) and Vanadium Redox Battery (VRB) tech…

Struggles for moral value and the reproduction of gendered and racialised hierarchies in online discussions of violence

2019

The article examines online discussions in Finland that focus on violence committed by Finnish women, on one hand, and non-white migrant men, on the other. Drawing on the perspective of sociology of value, the article illustrates how these discussions function as sites of struggles over moral worth in a contemporary context characterised by crises of both male and white hegemony. The authors suggest that, through the discussions, these current crises are projected on migrant men and certain groups of women, who thereby become construed as morally reprehensible. The analysis sheds light on processes of (re-)legitimating the moral virtue historically attached to both masculinity and whitenes…

Should the government pay more to public sector employees? Impact of subjective, stereotypicalwage and core self-evaluations on job satisfaction and …

2018

There are many stereotypes about work in public sector. It is supposedly more stable, less hectic but in the same time offers smaller wages in comparison to a work in private sector. But does it provide more satisfaction to employees? The current study compares work satisfaction (Warr, Cook, & Wall, 1979) and subjective Well-being (Diener, Emmons, Larsen, & Griffin, 1985) as dependent on subjective and objective wage evaluations (Brown, Gardner, Oswald, & Qian, 2008; Walczak, 2017) and Core Self-Evaluations (Judge, Locke, & Durham, 1997; Walczak & Derbis, 2015). On a sample of N=625 employees (of which 18%; n=118 were employed in public sector) an impact of subjective (rather than objective…

Zaspokojenie podstawowych potrzeb psychologicznych jako mediator między podstawowym samowartościowaniem a zadowoleniem zawodowym

2018

The article presents the verifi cation of a mediation between core self-evaluations (Judge, Locke, Durham, 1997) and work satisfaction, by the means of satisfaction of basic psychological needs at work (Deci et al., 2001). On a two multi-source cross-sectional samples (n1=977, n2=573), using path analysis, it was shown that both the structure of psychological needs at work is of three-factor character and that the postulated mediation relation can be confirmed. The results can be interpreted as a suggestion to look at the role of mediators between the dispositional variables such as core self-evaluations and job satisfaction.

The work-family interface and its correlates : integrating variable and person oriented approaches

2017

The aim of this research was to examine key correlates of the interaction between work and family in one Nordic country, Finland, using a person- oriented and variable-oriented approach. The correlates that were chosen and examined over the course of three studies were job control and work-family boundary management styles, turnover intention, core self-evaluations, and vigor at work. Study I was part of a 2-year longitudinal study which was conducted in two Finnish universities (n = 700); Study II consisted of two samples, one of university employees (University 1, n = 666; University 2, n = 644), and the other of nurses (n = 301) from one healthcare district in Finland; and Study III used…

The role of the happiness philosophy and core self-evaluations in defining job satisfaction as seen by the self and the significant other

2015

Medically unexplained symptoms in children and adolescents: Illness-related self-concept and parental symptom evaluations

2019

According to cognitive-behavioral models, illness-related symptom evaluations and self-concepts play a pivotal role in the development and maintenance of medically unexplained somatic symptoms (MUS). However, illness-related cognitions related to MUS have rarely been studied in children/adolescents and their parents.Seventy-eight children and adolescents (M = 14.2 years; 59% female) performed two versions of the Implicit Association Test (IAT) to measure the implicit illness-related and the implicit anxiety-related self-concept. Illness-related evaluations of unspecific symptoms were assessed via the Health Norms Sorting Task (HNST), and MUS as well as characteristics of somatic symptom dis…

Factor Structure and Longitudinal Factorial Validity of the Core Self-Evaluation Scale

2018

Abstract. The personality high-order concept of core self-evaluations (CSE), which refers to a basic evaluation of one’s worth, capability, and effectiveness, has attracted a lot of research interest. Yet little is known about the construct validity of the core self-evaluation scale (CSES) while information on its longitudinal factorial validity is wholly lacking. This study investigated the factor structure of the CSES using both confirmatory and exploratory factor analysis implemented in Mplus program. In addition, the factor loading invariance over time was investigated using exploratory structural equation modeling. Longitudinal data with three follow-ups over 2 years, gathered among u…

Proactive personality and early employment outcomes: The mediating role of career planning and the moderator role of core self-evaluations

2020

Abstract This study examines the relationship between university graduates' proactive personality and two early employment outcomes (i.e., employment status and perceived overqualification). Specifically, we propose two moderated mediation models, one for each employment outcome, with career planning as a mediator and core self-evaluations as a moderator in the proactive personality-employment outcomes link. The study sample consisted of 315 graduates, and a time-lagged design with two data-collection points was implemented. When the outcome was employment status, contrary to our expectations, the indirect effect of proactive personality via career planning was not moderated by core self-ev…
