The evaluation of springback in 3D stamping and coining processes
1998
Abstract An effective predictive technique of the elastic springback in a fully 3D 90° V-punch V-die bending process is presented. This is based on a combined approach in which an explicit finite element code was used to simulate the loading phase of the process whilst an implicit procedure was used to analyse the springback phase. Two different punches with a nose radius of 4 and 8 mm were used. An increase in the springback ratio with the coining load was observed with the lower nose radius. Conversely, an increase in the springback ratio with the coining load up to a peak value (>1), corresponding to a force of about 20 kN, followed by a decrease in the springback ratio with increasing t…
Concurrent optimization of size and switch-on priority of a multisource energy system for a commercial building application
2015
Abstract In recent years, the governments of most nations have pledged to (i) limit carbon dioxide emissions, (ii) reduce primary energy consumption by increasing production, distribution and end-use efficiency and (iii) increase the utilization of renewable energy sources. In general, these goals are pursued separately by law, by subsidizing renewable energy technologies, reducing the demand or using high efficiency technologies. In this context, multi-source systems for the fulfillment of energy demands are highly advantageous because they are based on different technologies which use renewable, partially renewable and fossil energy sources. However, the main issues of multi-source system…
Assessment of seismic resistance of masonry structures including boundary conditions
2002
The paper is devoted to the investigation of seismic response of the masonry structure and describes experiences with modelling of boundary conditions during the test of large heavy model on 6DOF shaking table. The main aim of the research was how to increase dynamic resistance capacity of old masonry buildings including the medium and strong seismic effects. The results of theoretical and numerical analyses are compared including initial forecasting calculations made before any test started. The emphasis is given to the boundary conditions reached during the excitation of the large masonry model via shaking table. Strengthening and retrofitting procedures and their effects are discussed wh…
Wine label design as a strategic tool to attract consumers. A marketing study on Sicilian wine positioning
2013
Occupational hygiene in a waste incineration plant
2003
Abstract The Turku incineration plant was renovated in 1995 to meet the emission requirements of modern waste combustion facilities. It treats presorted municipal waste from 170,000 residents in the Turku area. In the plant, the incineration process produces several types of by-products having importance in terms of occupational hygiene. Although not obligated by the law, the management of the plant has a keen interest in occupational hygiene at the plant, which was studied from 1998 to 2001. Concentrations of microbes, endotoxins, and dust and the noise level were investigated in three different working areas. Microbe measurements were conducted with a six-stage impactor and using the CAMN…
CAMELINA SATIVA AS A CROP FOR DIVERSIFICATION OF AGRICULTURE AND AS A PRODUCER OF HIGH QUALITY OIL
2007
‘Camelina sativa’ is one of the oldest oil crops in Europe. Growing areas were reduced dramatically in 20-40-ties of the last century. Low price of rape oil and unclear composition of camelina oil were primary reasons of this process. Nevertheless, last years ‘Camelina sativa' attracted a great interest of scientists and oil processors as a crop for diversification of agriculture and, in the same time, for producing of the high quantity and quality oil for biofuel, feeding, food, and pharmacy (source of a-linolenic acid, linoleic acid and vitamins, especially E). In Latvia ‘Camelina sativa' is spread as a wild form but for the agriculture it is a new crop. The potential of me of ‘Camelina sa…
An extension of the fractional model for construction of asphalt binder master curve
2015
Knowledge and prediction of viscoelastic behaviour of asphalt binder is of great interest in order to design asphalt mixtures for civil construction of road and airports with good performances. The capability of a fractional model – requiring a very limited number of parameters – to describe and predict the linear viscoelastic behaviour of asphalt binder subjected to sinusoidal oscillations is investigated. Experimental data of complex modulus, |G*|, and phase angle, δ, are used to validate the proposed constitutive model. Based on the proposed extension of a fractional model, complex modulus isotherms for a range of frequencies can be created simply starting from isochronals at frequency v…
A Procedure for Selecting Representative Subsamples of a Population from a Simple Random Sample
2015
This paper proposes a procedure for selecting large subsamples drawn from a large simple random sample that are more representative of the population under study. By means of the so-called constant of proportionality, the procedure seeks to maximize the size of the subsample taken from a stratified random sample with proportional allocation, restricting it to a p-value high enough to achieve a good fit using Pearson’s chi-square goodness of fit test. The user has the freedom to choose between a larger subsample with poorer adjustment or a smaller subsample with a better fit. We use the Continuous Sample of Working Lives (CSWL), a set of micro data taken from Spanish Social Security records,…
Post Feed-in Scheme Photovoltaic System Feasibility Evaluation in Italy: Sicilian Case Studies
2014
: Thanks to national energy policies, over recent years the Italian photovoltaic (PV) sector has undergone an extraordinary growth, also affecting the primary sector. In this context, Mediterranean greenhouses are well-adapted to photovoltaic systems because they represent one of the most energy-intensive sectors in agriculture. The Italian feed-in scheme ended at the beginning of 2013, making it necessary to investigate the feasibility of photovoltaic systems devoid of any electricity production-related incentives. In this paper, production cost and profitability analyses of photovoltaic electricity have been conducted, considering Mediterranean solar greenhouses in which, thanks to net me…
Using human-values as a guide for understanding worthy design directions in augmented reality
2016
Augmented reality is a fast developing field, which will no doubt gain strong footing in the area of social media in the near future. Recently, Google Glass placed AR towards the top of the technological hype curve in regards to interaction possibilities, information overlay, information search and recording. Questions still remain however, regarding the added-value that AR offers to already existing interaction modes and technologies. In this study four concepts were designed and tested via video scenarios. The concepts related to three main product categories: educational tools; information presentation; and x-ray vision. The results positively reflected on the application of AR for educa…
