Can visualization alleviate dichotomous thinking? Effects of visual representations on the cliff effect

2021

Common reporting styles for statistical results in scientific articles, such as $p$ p -values and confidence intervals (CI), have been reported to be prone to dichotomous interpretations, especially with respect to the null hypothesis significance testing framework. For example when the $p$ p -value is small enough or the CIs of the mean effects of a studied drug and a placebo are not overlapping, scientists tend to claim significant differences while often disregarding the magnitudes and absolute differences in the effect sizes. This type of reasoning has been shown to be potentially harmful to science. Techniques relying on the visual estimation of the strength of evidence have been recom…

Acoustic Su-Schrieffer-Heeger lattice: Direct mapping of acoustic waveguides to the Su-Schrieffer-Heeger model

2021

Topological physics strongly relies on prototypical lattice model with particular symmetries. We report here on a theoretical and experimental work on acoustic waveguides that is directly mapped to the one-dimensional Su-Schrieffer-Heeger chiral model. Starting from the continuous two dimensional wave equation we use a combination of monomadal approximation and the condition of equal length tube segments to arrive at the wanted discrete equations. It is shown that open or closed boundary conditions topological leads automatically to the existence of edge modes. We illustrate by graphical construction how the edge modes appear naturally owing to a quarter-wavelength condition and the conserv…

Robustness of Coherence: An Operational and Observable Measure of Quantum Coherence

2016

Quantifying coherence is an essential endeavour for both quantum foundations and quantum technologies. Here the robustness of coherence is defined and proven a full monotone in the context of the recently introduced resource theories of quantum coherence. The measure is shown to be observable, as it can be recast as the expectation value of a coherence witness operator for any quantum state. The robustness of coherence is evaluated analytically on relevant classes of states, and an efficient semidefinite program that computes it on general states is given. An operational interpretation is finally provided: the robustness of coherence quantifies the advantage enabled by a quantum state in a …

Fractional quantum Hall effect in the interacting Hofstadter model via tensor networks

2017

We show via tensor network methods that the Harper-Hofstadter Hamiltonian for hard-core bosons on a square geometry supports a topological phase realizing the $\nu=1/2$ fractional quantum Hall effect on the lattice. We address the robustness of the ground state degeneracy and of the energy gap, measure the many-body Chern number, and characterize the system using Green functions, showing that they decay algebraically at the edges of open geometries, indicating the presence of gapless edge modes. Moreover, we estimate the topological entanglement entropy by taking a combination of lattice bipartitions that reproduces the topological structure of the original proposals by Kitaev and Preskill,…

Diffusion front capturing schemes for a class of Fokker–Planck equations: Application to the relativistic heat equation

2010

In this research work we introduce and analyze an explicit conservative finite difference scheme to approximate the solution of initial-boundary value problems for a class of limited diffusion Fokker-Planck equations under homogeneous Neumann boundary conditions. We show stability and positivity preserving property under a Courant-Friedrichs-Lewy parabolic time step restriction. We focus on the relativistic heat equation as a model problem of the mentioned limited diffusion Fokker-Planck equations. We analyze its dynamics and observe the presence of a singular flux and an implicit combination of nonlinear effects that include anisotropic diffusion and hyperbolic transport. We present numeri…

Opinion Statement ECJ-TF 3/2019 on the CJEU Decision of 22 November 2018 in Case C-575/17, Sofina, on Withholding Taxes, Losses and Territoriality

2020

This article deals with the decision taken by the Court of Justice of the European Union in Sofina. In the authors' view, it may have extended the standard of comparability, requiring (foreign) non-dividend income of the recipient to be taken into consideration in comparing the tax treatment of domestic and outbound dividends. This comparator, however, upsets the principle of territoriality, as accepted by the Court in Futura (Case C-250/95) and Centro Equestre (Case C-345/04), by requiring the source state to take into account losses that the non-resident taxpayer has in the residence state. Taken at face value, Sofina's impact may extend well beyond withholding taxes, specifically, and di…

Value based trading of real assets in shipping under stochastic freight rates

2009

The article uses a real options valuation model with stochastic freight rates to investigate market efficiency and the economics of switching between the dry bulk and the tanker markets in international shipping. A dry bulk carrier is replaced with a tanker when the expected net present value of such a switch is optimal from a real options based decision rule. Depending on the development of the markets a reversal may take place later. The cost and demand parameters upon which the decisions to switch are made, including the stochastic characteristics of freight rates, are estimated from an empirical analysis that is updated every week throughout a 12-year time period from 1993 to 2005. Values and Personal Life Investment in Middle-Age: Measures and Relations

2015

The present study analyzed the factor structure of Schwartz Value Survey (SVS; 46 items) and the personal life investment (PLI; 10 items) scale, as well as the mutual relations between these two measures. The 50-year-old participants (n = 217–224) were drawn from the ongoing Finnish Jyväskylä Longitudinal Study of Personal and Social Development. For the SVS, the confirmatory factor analysis (CFA) supported the 14-factor structure: achievement, tradition, stimulation, hedonism, security, conformity, power, universalism (with sub-factors of societal concern, tolerance and protecting nature), benevolence (with sub-factors of caring and dependability) and self-direction (with sub-factors of au…

Improved FMECA for effective risk management decision making by failure modes classification under uncertainty

2022

Failure Mode, Effects, and Criticality Analysis (FMECA) is a proactive reliability and risk management technique extensively used in practice to ensure high system performance by prioritising failure modes. Owing to the limitations of traditional FMECA, multi-criteria decision-making methods have been employed over the past two decades to enhance its effectiveness. To consider the vagueness and uncertainty of the FMECA evaluation process, an interval-based extension of the Elimination et Choice Translating Reality (ELECTRE) TRI method is proposed in the present paper for the classification of failure modes into risk categories. Therefore, ratings of failure modes against risk parameters are…

Conceptual framework and measurement: A survey on the international debate

2015

In response to the ‘2011 Agenda Consultation’, the IASB launched in July 2013 a call for a new Discussion Paper on the ‘Conceptual Framework for Financial Reporting’. This article aims to offer a contribution to the debate on the effectiveness of the theme of ‘Measurement’, by investigating the use of the current evaluation models in the literature and practice of Financial Reporting. The article proposes at first a historical survey both of the international debate on Fair Value Accounting vs. Historical Cost Accounting and of the Italian theories on the valuation. Later the paper proposes some considerations about the key questions related to Measurement and the possible policy implicatio…
