Background Autonomic dysregulation is one of the recognized pathophysiological mechanisms in sepsis, generating the hypothesis that heart rate variability (HRV) can be used to predict mortality in sepsis. Methods This was a systematic review of studies evaluating HRV as a predictor of death in patients with sepsis. The search was performed by independent researchers in PubMed, LILACS and Cochrane, including papers in English, Portuguese or Spanish, indexed until August 20th, 2017 with at least 10 patients. Objective To investigate the association of asymmetry in leg extension power (LEP) with walking and standing balance. Design Cross-sectional analysis. Setting Research laboratory. Participants Healthy female twins (N=419), ages 63 to 75 years. Interventions Not applicable. Main Outcome Measures The LEP difference between the stronger and the weaker leg, measured with the Nottingham power rig, was calculated. We investigated the spontaneous uterine activity of isolated corpus uteri myometrial strips from 30 patients with nonpathologic myometrium, 26 patients with uterine myoma, 23 patients with uterine adenomyosis, and three patients with uterine malignancy. We also investigated the influence of these conditions on the response of the uterus to histamine. The results show the same qualitative cyclic changes of the spontaneous motility of isolated myometrial strips throughout the menstrual cycle in all the abnormalities studied. A comprehensive literature review was performed on liver intravoxel incoherent motion (IVIM) magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) technique and its applications. Heterogeneous data have been reported. IVIM parameters are magnetic field strength dependent to a mild extent. A lower Dslow (D) value at 3 T than at 1.5 T and higher perfusion fraction (PF) value at 3 T than at 1.5 T were noted. An increased number of b values are associated with increased IVIM parameter measurement accuracy. With the current status of art, IVIM technique is not yet capable of detecting early stage liver fibrosis and diagnosing liver fibrosis grades, nor can it differentiate liver tumors. Stationary muscle mounding after muscle percussion without electrical muscle activity is called myoedema. Out of 105 patients with different neurological diseases, 88% had this phenomenon. Muscle conduction velocity and stimulated single fiber EMG disclosed no abnormalities. Myoedema is a normal physiological phenomenon, and its presence does not indicate a neuromuscular disorder.

This article reviews the quantitative US imaging tools currently available in MSK radiology, specifically focusing on the evaluation of elasticity with shear-wave elastography, perfusion with contrast-enhanced US and noncontrast superb microvascular imaging, and bone and muscle mass with quantitative US methods. Subclinical infections of the prostate can increase the prostate-specific antigen (PSA) values in patients with normal digital rectal examination. This study aimed to evaluate the role of short-term antimicrobial therapy in reducing the PSA value in patients as candidates for transrectal biopsy. Fifty-eight patients with negative digital rectal examination and PSA values between 4 and 20 ng/mL were included in the study. Antibiotics were administered to all patients for 3 weeks, and the PSA was reassessed 10 days after the end of the treatment. Patients were subsequently submitted to prostate biopsy.
