Study on maternal, fetal and amniotic prolactin in gestational diabetic women, at term.
1982
In order to determine whether prolactin secretion was affected in diabetic pregnancy, maternal, fetal and amniotic fluid prolactin (PRL) concentrations were measured in gestational non treated diabetic women at parturition. Amniotic fluid PRL levels, though higher than those in maternal and fetal serum, were significantly lower than those of the controls (p less than 0.005); no case of respiratory distress syndrome or congenital malformation was found at birth.
Quantitative corneal anatomy in emmetropic subjects.
2006
PURPOSE Currently there is little information available about the corneal thickness values of healthy emmetropic subjects. Therefore, the authors decided to analyze the corneal thickness in healthy emmetropic subjects. METHODS The authors analyzed the difference in thickness values between the thinnest corneal site and the central and paracentral cornea in 124 eyes of 124 healthy emmetropic white subjects. RESULTS The mean difference between the thinnest site of the cornea and the thickness values obtained in the areas analyzed was as follows: 12+/-6 microm center; 140+/-19 microm superonasal; 133+/-23 microm nasal; 117+/-26 microm inferonasal; 122+/-19 microm superotemporal ; 89+/-22 micro…
Main posterior watershed zone of the choroid
1989
The main posterior watershed zone of the choroid is located between the nasal edge of the optic disc and the fovea and represents the area situated between the territories supplied by the temporal and nasal posterior ciliary arteries. In the fluorescein angiographies of 800 normal subjects a watershed zone was not observed in 33.1% due to technical reasons and in 22.3% due to the simultaneous filling of the peripapillar and macular choriocapillaris. In the remaining 44.6% the watershed zone was well outlined: it was straddling the optic disc in about half of these cases and involved the temporal half of the optic disc and the close choroid in the other half. Very rarely the watershed zone i…
Bone age determination based on the study of the medial extremity of the clavicle
1998
The development of the medial clavicular epiphysis and its fusion with the clavicular shaft have been a subject of medical research since the second decade of this century. Computed tomography provides the imaging modality of choice in analyzing the maturation process of the sternal end of the clavicle. In a retrospective study, we analyzed normal development in 380 individuals under the age of 30 years. The appearance of an epiphyseal ossification center occurred between ages 11 and 22 years. Partial union was found from age 16 until age 26 years. Complete union was first noted at age 22 years and in 100 % of the sample at age 27 years. Based on these data, age-related standardized age dis…
Psychopathological predictors of suicide in patients with major depression during a 5-year follow-up.
2001
SummaryObjective. It is widely known that the risk of suicide is higher in cases of major depressive disorders in comparison to the general population. The purpose of this study was to examine which psychopathologic symptoms during the index episode are predictors for an increased risk of suicide in the further course of major depression.Method. Mortality data were determined from a prospective study of 280 patients with major depression (DSM-III-R, single episode or recurrent) during a follow-up period of 5 years. The predictive power of different depressive symptoms including psychotic symptoms for suicide risk was investigated.Results.Patients who committed suicide(N = 16)during the foll…
Evidence for increased androsterone metabolism in some normoandrogenic women with acne.
1993
Increased androgen production from the ovary, adrenal or locally in skin has been implicated in the pathogenesis of acne. Recent data have provided evidence that androsterone (Ao) metabolism is exaggerated in acne and serum metabolites of Ao differentiate between acne and hirsutism in hyperandrogenic women. Here we have extended these studies to normoandrogenic women who have moderate to severe acne. We measured serum ovarian and adrenal androgens as well as the glucuronide and sulfate metabolites of Ao and 3 alpha-androstanediol which reflect, in part, peripheral androgen action. In a group of 15 well-selected normoandrogenic patients with acne, both serum Ao glucuronide (G) and Ao were el…
A fully automated system for the evaluation of masseter silent periods.
1997
Exteroceptive suppression of masseter muscle activity, 'masseter inhibitory reflex', comprises one or 2 silent periods (SP1 and SP2) interrupting the voluntary activation. The main problem when evaluating exteroceptive suppression is the lack of an objective and precise measure for the onset and end of the silent period which so far has not been overcome by various automated systems. We describe a new fully automated system for determining the onset and end of the masseter silent period. The decision approach is essentially based upon deterministic properties of median filters which are used to partition the local variances of the EMG traces into constant segments and edges between them. Th…
Effects of anemia correction with epoetin beta in patients receiving radiochemotherapy for advanced cervical cancer
2007
Patients with cervical cancer frequently suffer from anemia. This two-stage, adaptive-design study investigated the effect of anemia correction with epoetin beta on treatment outcomes. Patients with stage IIB–IVA cervical cancer received radiochemotherapy (RCT) and were randomized to epoetin 150 IU/kg three times weekly (n = 34) or standard care (control; n = 40) for up to 12 weeks. Primary end point for stage 1 aimed to establish a correlation between anemia correction and treatment failure (no complete response or relapsing within 6 months after RCT initiation) as a proof of concept before moving into stage 2. Secondary end points included progression/relapse-free survival, overall surviv…
Echocardiography in diagnosis of aortic dissection.
1989
In a multicentre study the accuracy of echocardiography was measured in 164 consecutive patients with suspected aortic dissection. The diagnosis was subsequently proven (82 patients) on the basis of transthoracic and transoesophageal echocardiography and additional diagnostic procedures, including computed tomography (CT), aortic angiography, and surgery and/or necropsy. The sensitivity and specificity of echocardiography were 99% and 98%, respectively, with positive and negative predictive values of 98% and 99%. For CT sensitivity was 83%, specificity 100%, and positive and negative predictive values 100% and 86%, respectively. For aortography sensitivity and specificity were 88% and 94%, …
The accuracy of sentinel lymph node biopsy in the treatment of multicentric invasive breast cancer using a subareolar injection of tracer.
2008
BACKGROUND: The aim of this study was to evaluate the feasibility and the accuracy of sentinel lymph node biopsy in multicentric breast cancer (MBC) performed by means of a subareolar (SA) injection of both 99Tc-labeled human albumin colloid and lymphazurin. METHODS: Between January 2002 and October 2007, 34 patients with MBC with clinically negative axilla underwent sentinel lymph node biopsy (SLNB) followed by total axillary node dissection (AD). Overall successful identification rate of SLN was 100%; there were no false negatives and overall accuracy rate was 100%. RESULTS: The mean number of sentinel lymph nodes (SLNs) identified was 1.8 +/- 0.88 (range = 1-4); the mean number of axilla…
