Usage of BODE index to estimate the results of rehabilitation of patients with chronic obstructive lung disease
2008
Abstract: BODE index is the prognostic indicator in chronic obstructive lung disease, in which beyond bronchial obstruction the body mass index, dyspnea and competence exercise are taken into consideration. The indicator consists of few elements: B – BMI, O – obturation, D – dyspnea, E – exercise, taking into consideration various constitutional aspects of disease. The purpose of the paper was usage of BODE index in estimation of results of rehabilitation of patients with Chronic Obstructive Lung Disease. 60 in- hospital patients with chronic obstructive lung disease were examined, in Specialized Hospital MSWiA (Ministry of Interior and Administration) in Glucholazy. The pa-tients, who were…
Accessibility of eGovernment Web Sites: Towards a Collaborative Retrofitting Approach
2010
Published version of a chapter from the book: Computers Helping People with Special Needs. The original publication is available at www.springerlink.com: http://dx.doi.org/10.1007/978-3-642-14097-6_75 Accessibility benchmarking is efficient to raise awareness and initiate competition. However, traditional benchmarking is of little avail when it comes to removing barriers from eGovernment web sites in practice. Regulations and legal enforcement may be helpful in a long-term perspective. For more rapid progress both vendors and web site maintainers are willing to take short-term action towards improvements, provided that clear advise is available. The approach of the eGovernment Monitoring pro…
The European Courts and the Security Council: Between "Dédoublement Fonctionnel" and Balancing of Values
2009
The recent case law of various international tribunals facing questions related to UN Security Council resolutions shows the clear tendency to grant primacy to the UN legal order. This trend, far from being well founded on formal arguments, appears to be a tribute to a legal order perceived as superior, and, at the same time, is revealing of the ‘value oriented’ approach followed by the courts. Such an approach can be categorized from a theoretical perspective in the light of Scelle's theory of relations between legal orders, whereby the courts implement in their respective legal orders values stemming from the UN legal order. Various critical remarks can be advanced in relation to this att…
BlotBase: a northern blot database.
2008
With the availability of high-throughput gene expression analysis, multiple public expression databases emerged, mostly based on microarray expression data. Although these databases are of significant biomedical value, they do hold significant drawbacks, especially concerning the reliability of single gene expression profiles obtained by microarray data. Simultaneously, reliable data on an individual gene's expression are often published as single northern blots in individual publications. These data were not yet available for high-throughput screening. To reduce the gap between high-throughput expression data and individual highly reliable expression data, we designed a novel database "Blo…
Effect of sulfur dioxide on mucociliary activity and ciliary beat frequency in guinea pig trachea
1994
The effects of 30 min exposure to sulfur dioxide on mucociliary activity (MCA) and ciliary beat frequency (CBF) were studied in 31 guinea pig tracheas. MCA was measured by recording the light reflected from ciliated mucous membranes using an infrared bar code reader. CBF of single ciliated cells obtained by brushing was measured with phase-contrast microscopy. Each tracheal sample was exposed to SO2 at concentrations ranging from 2.5 to 12.5 ppm, or to air for control purposes. MCA and CBF were measured before and immediately after gas exposure. A reduction in mean MCA of 63% (P = 0.0007) and statistically insignificant changes in CBF (P > 0.05) were recorded at concentrations of 2.5 PPM SO…
Effects of dopamine infusion on plasma catecholamines in preterm and term newborn infants.
1991
Newborn infants (21 preterm and 13 term) received dopamine infusions at a low (2.5-3.4 micrograms/kg per min) and/or high (5-10 micrograms/kg per min) infusion rate and changes in plasma catecholamines were monitored. The mean baseline values for dopamine, noradrenaline and adrenaline were between 240 and 560, 125 and 144 and 62 and 82 pg/ml, respectively. During low-rate infusion of dopamine, there was a significant increase in plasma dopamine (20-100 fold), noradrenaline (three- to five-fold) and adrenaline (threefold). Administration of dopamine at the high rate resulted in an even larger increase in the plasma catecholamines (dopamine, 100-300 fold; noradrenaline, seven- to eightfold; a…
Background levels and baseline values of available heavy metals in Mediterranean greenhouse soils (Spain)
2011
Abstract This study determines extractable levels of Cd, Cu, Pb, Zn, Ni and Co in western Almeria (Spain) greenhouse surface soil horizons using EDTA solution, which is identified as the fraction available for organisms and plants. It also establishes background levels, geochemical baseline concentration and reference values (RV), and investigates the possible relationships between soil properties and elemental concentrations. The results show that the soil concentration of these extractable heavy metals was high as those reported by other authors for Spanish agricultural soils. The available RV concentrations obtained (mg kg −1 ) were: Cd 0.17, Cu 1.6, Pb 13.8, Zn 5.0 Ni 1.7 and Co 2.9. Us…
A comparative quantitative & qualitative assessment in orthodontic treatment of white spot lesion treated with 3 different commercially available mat…
2019
Background To comparatively evaluate the esthetic improvement of white-spot lesions (WSLs) treated by: BiominF, CPP-ACP paste with fluoride & ICON resin infiltration, using Spectrophotometer & Diagnodent. Material and Methods The study was done using 72 sound permanent extracted premolars, divided into four groups (18 teeth per group). After taking the ethical approval the study was commenced. WSLs were created on human premolars and randomly assigned to four groups: Group A: Artificial Saliva, Group B: CPP-ACP with fluoride, Group C: BiominF, Group D: Resin infiltration (Icon). The color change (∆E) of each specimen was measured with a Spectrophotometer (VITA Easy Shade Compact), and fluor…
Basic skills provision for the have‐nots: a rights hoax? Re‐examining international standards on the right to education
2011
In the present era of accelerating globalisation of the labour market and education, access to knowledge of value has become increasingly complicated. This study enquired into the rights to post‐compulsory basic education by analysing the contemporary standard‐setting instruments of the United Nations, the Council of Europe and the European Community. An analytical scheme was developed that suggested four interconnected areas of education legislation, disregard of which cumulatively maintains exclusion of educationally disadvantaged individuals from knowledge and skills with proper value in the job market. The four thematic aspects identified were rights, recognition, resources and represen…
