Hydroquinone derivatives from the marine-derived fungus Gliomastix sp.

Eight new hydroquinone derivatives, gliomastins A–D (1–4), 9-O-methylgliomastin C (5), acremonin A 1-O-β-D-glucopyranoside (6), gliomastin E 1-O-β-D-glucopyranoside (7), and 6′-O-acetyl-isohomoarbutin (8), together with seven known analogues were isolated from the marine-derived fungus Gliomastix sp. Their structures were elucidated by extensive spectroscopic analysis including 1D and 2D NMR measurements aided by DFT NMR calculations as well as MS data. Alternative method for binary shape alignment of non-symmetrical shapes based on minimal enclosing box

Proposed is a novel method based on the minimal enclosing box (MEB) to determine the canonical orientation associated with a three-dimensional binary shape. It is suggested that, when the shape has no clear distinctive features and two or more of the eigenvalues are similar, this method is more suitable than the commonly used method based on principal component analysis (PCA). An experiment is performed with shapes of human livers by measuring the degree on which a prototypical image (atlas) matches to a new shape after alignment by PCA, minimal area projection (MAP), and MEB showing that in this case MEB outperforms the usual PCA-based alignment method and also the MAP method.

Understanding drivers of demand for exotic pets may help inform adequate conservation strategies to address unsustainable trade. Here, we used a best-worst scaling approach to understand the variety of preferences and motivations for owning exotic pets. Respondents (316 from 33 countries) preferred exotic pets that were captive-bred, had rare aesthetic features, and were common in the wild and abundant in the market. A novel series of 3-(3-phenyl-isoxazol-5-yl) or 3-[(3-phenyl-isoxazol-5-yl)amino] substituted 4(3H)-quinazolinone derivatives was synthesized. The compounds were tested for their antineoplastic activity in vitro against Raji (human Burkitt limphoma). K-562 (human chronic myelogeneous leukemia) and U937 (human histiocytic limphoma) cell lines. The most active quinazolinones showed IC50 values in the range 16-30 microM.
Conrad Under Polish Eyes - or: is Conrad still "one of us"?

This article discusses the attitude of Polish Conrad scholars towards Conrad and his works from the very beginning of his literary career to the present day, discussing the way they have perceived Conrad’s national identity and his cultural belonging. Although I aim to present a review of Polish criticism over the years, I pay particular attention to modern criticism, i.e. that of the period since the end of the Second World War, which includes the years of de facto communist rule (1945-1989). I try to determine whether Conrad is still “one of us”, whether he can be perceived as a moralist in the twenty-fi rst century and whether there is a need for such a moralist in present-day Poland.
