Diffusive energy growth in classical and quantum driven oscillators

1991

We study the long-time stability of oscillators driven by time-dependent forces originating from dynamical systems with varying degrees of randomness. The asymptotic energy growth is related to ergodic properties of the dynamical system: when the autocorrelation of the force decays sufficiently fast one typically obtains linear diffusive growth of the energy. For a system with good mixing properties we obtain a stronger result in the form of a central limit theorem. If the autocorrelation decays slowly or does not decay, the behavior can depend on subtle properties of the particular model. We study this dependence in detail for a family of quasiperiodic forces. The solution involves the ana…

Effect of a finite external heat transfer coefficient on the Darcy-Bénard instability in a vertical porous cylinder

2013

Publised version of an article from the journal: Physics of Fluids. Copyright (2013) American Institute of Physics. This article may be downloaded for personal use only. Any other use requires prior permission of the author and the American Institute of Physics. Article appears in Volume 25 issue 4 of the journal: http://dx.doi.org/10.1063/1.4799253 The onset of thermal convection in a vertical porous cylinder is studied by considering the heating from below and the cooling from above as caused by external forced convection processes. These processes are parametrised through a finite Biot number, and hence through third-kind, or Robin, temperature conditions imposed on the lower and upper b…

Isolactarane and Sterpurane Sesquiterpenoids from the Basidiomycete Phlebia uda

2012

Three new sesquiterpenoids, named udasterpurenol A, udalactarane A, and udalactarane B, as well as the known compounds hyphodontal and sterpuric acid have been isolated from the basidiomycete Phlebia uda. These compounds represent the first natural products described from this species. The structures were elucidated by NMR spectroscopy and mass spectrometry. Udalactaranes A and B were isolated as mixtures with their respective epimeric acetals. These mixtures inhibited the spore germination of the plant pathogenic fungus Fusarium graminearum at 10 and 5 μg/mL, respectively, and were active against Jurkat cells with IC(50) values of 101 and 42 μM, respectively.

Clustering techniques for personal photo album management

2009

In this work we propose a novel approach for the automatic representation of pictures achieving at more effective organization of personal photo albums. Images are analyzed and described in multiple representation spaces, namely, faces, background and time of capture. Faces are automatically detected, rectified and represented projecting the face itself in a common low-dimensional eigenspace. Backgrounds are represented with low-level visual features based on RGB histogram and Gabor filter bank. Faces, time and background information of each image in the collection is automatically organized using a mean-shift clustering technique. Given the particular domain of personal photo libraries, wh…

Influence of contrast agent dose and image acquisition timing on the quantitative determination of nonviable myocardial tissue using delayed contrast…

2004

BACKGROUND: Delayed contrast-enhanced magnetic resonance imaging (ceMRI) has been shown to identify areas of irreversible myocardial injury due to infarction (MI) with high spatial resolution, allowing precise quantification of nonviable (hyperenhanced) myocardium. The aim of our study was to investigate the size of nonviable myocardium quantitatively as a function of time post-contrast when inversion time is held constant in patients post-myocardial infarction using two contrast agent (CA) doses. METHODS: Nine patients with chronic MI underwent two MR scans on a 1.5 Tesla system. Contrast-enhanced MRI data in two short-axis (SA) slices were continuously acquired until 40 minutes after CA i…

"Ein deutsches Tagebuch" Stefana Chwina

2017

The main themes of this article are connected with reading the prose of Stefan Chwin: Kartki z dziennika [Pages of a diary] (2004) and Dziennik dla dorosłych [A diary for adults] (2008), which selected and translated by Marta Kijowska came out in Berlin, under the title: Ein deutsches Tagebuch. The weekly Die Zeit placed it on the list of the ten best books of 2015. In the context of this distinction, reading Chwin’s diaries becomes a unique putting values to test, a discovery of the significance of the author’s voice in discussions about the condition of modem world and contemporary human being. This is so because a close reading of Chwin’s diaries allows us not only to cognitively go thro…

C8 Reference Typing Report and Nomenclature Recommendation

1990

Using two different typing techniques (i.e. polyacrylamide gel isoelectric focusing (PAGIF) with Western blot and SDS-polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis of precipitated C8 under nonreducing conditions with Western blot), the following observations were made during the reference typing for C81 (C8A). The Japanese variant A1J is probably identical with A1Cauc, whereas B1J is definitely different from B1Cauc and could therefore provisionally be named HB3'. Variant 'A2' from Japan is focused in an intermediate position, but different from M1 and could be named 'M2'. Both variants possess normal A subunits. B2 from Japan is clearly different from B1Cauc and should retain its designation. In PAGI…

Civic Participation and Gender Beliefs: An Analysis of 46 Countries

2016

Gender equality has progressed a great deal in recent decades in response to modernisation, industrialisation, and the generally rising level of education. A transformation in gender beliefs has accompanied the progress on gender equality and beliefs about gender roles have mainly changed in countries in North America and Europe, while in Muslim and Asian countries they have remained the same. The analysis in this article focuses on civic participation and investigates its relation to equalitarian gender beliefs. Multi-level regression models and data from World Values Survey (WVS) collected from 46 countries in 2005 allow depicting the relationships. The findings show that membership in ci…

Evidence for shared environmental contributions to attention-deficit/hyperactivity traits. A twin study

2019

Background and objectives: Behavior-genetic analyses have shown that measurements of inattention and hyperactivity-impulsivity are genetically-influenced. In view of limited studies on ADHD (Attention deficit hyperactivity disorder) in Spanish samples, this study aims to explore the genetic architecture of ADHD symptoms; inattention and hyperactivity-impulsivity in a Spanish twin schoolchildren sample. Methods: Participants were 258 pairs of adolescent Spanish twins. Symptoms of ADHD, inattention and hyperactivity-impulsivity were assessed by means of a sub-scale of the Strengths and Difficulties Questionnaire. Univariate twin models, according to sex, were run to assess the heritability of…

Subjective Health and Subjective Well-Being (The Case of EU Countries)

2014

Article presents the concept of subjective health in the context of the structure of subjective well-being. We emphasize the structural link between satisfaction with health as a life domain and satisfaction with a life as a whole within cognitive part of subjective well-being. To explain the link between life satisfaction as a whole and satisfaction with health we apply Needs Conceptual Model of Subjective Well-Being and bottom-up approach. We recognize that objective life domains—life circumstances are mirrored and evaluated by human consciousness. The more or less favourable objective life circumstances are, the better or worse is the satisfaction with them by an individual. From the ver…
