Comparison of right ventricular longitudinal strain imaging, tricuspid annular plane systolic excursion, and cardiac biomarkers for early diagnosis o…
2012
Aims To determine the role of assessing right ventricular (RV) function, using standard echocardiography and Doppler myocardial imaging (DMI), in the early diagnosis of cardiac amyloidosis and in the prediction of mortality. Methods and results Patients with primary systemic (AL) amyloidosis seen at our institution from 1 February 2004 through 31 October 2005 (N = 249) were categorized by left ventricular thickness and E′ velocity and compared with 38 age- and sex-matched controls. Standard echocardiographic and DMI examination were used to measure echocardiographic parameters of RV function: systolic tissue velocity, strain rate, and strain were determined for basal and middle RV free wall…
Three-Year Results of Repaired Barlow Mitral Valves via Right Minithoracotomy versus Median Sternotomy in a Randomized Trial
2012
<b><i>Objectives:</i></b> To clarify whether the results of repair of a complex mitral lesion (Barlow valve) at the intermediate-term follow-up are independent of the mode of surgical access [minithoracotomy vs. median sternotomy (MS)]. <b><i>Methods:</i></b> In a prospective randomized study of mitral repair for Barlow disease using either a minimally invasive (MI) approach or MS, we achieved an average follow-up of 3 years (echocardiography, physical examination and quality of life). Mitral repair was achieved with polytetrafluoroethylene chordal implantation for both leaflets. <b><i>Results:</i></b> Both groups inclu…
Sex-Related Clinical Characteristics and Outcomes of Patients Undergoing Transcatheter Edge-to-Edge Repair for Secondary Mitral Regurgitation.
2021
OBJECTIVES The authors sought to assess sex-based differences in characteristics and outcomes of patients undergoing transcatheter edge-to-edge mitral valve repair (TMVR) for secondary mitral regurgitation (SMR). BACKGROUND Subgroup analysis from the COAPT (Cardiovascular Outcomes Assessment of the MitraClip Percutaneous Therapy for HeartFailure Patients with Functional Mitral Regurgitation) trial indicated potential sex-related differences in outcomes after TMVR. The impact of sex on results after TMVR in a real-world setting is unknown. METHODS The authors assessed clinical outcomes and echocardiographic parameters in women and men undergoing TMVR for SMR between 2008 and 2018 who were …
Manganese speciation inDiplodon chilensis patagonicusshells: a XANES study
2009
X-ray absorption near-edge spectroscopy (XANES) at the Mn K-edge was used to investigate the environment of Mn in situ within the growth increments of the long-lived freshwater bivalve species Diplodon chilensis patagonicus. Single XANES spectra and Mn Kalpha fluorescence distributions were acquired at submillimetre resolution (up to 100 microm x 50 microm), at Mn concentrations below the weight percent range (100-1000 microg g(-1)) in a high Ca matrix. The position and intensity of the pre-edge feature in the shell spectrum resembles best that of the Mn(II)-bearing reference compounds, suggesting that this is the oxidation state of Mn in the bivalve shells. By comparison with the XANES spe…

Structural, electronic, and magnetic properties of pseudomorphic CrFe nanostripes on W(110)
2007
We have grown pseudomorphic binary ${\mathrm{Cr}}_{1\ensuremath{-}x}{\mathrm{Fe}}_{x}$ alloy monolayers and sequences of Cr and Fe nanostripes on W(110) by molecular-beam epitaxy in ultrahigh vacuum. By coadsorption of Cr and Fe a pseudomorphic random CrFe alloy grows on the W(110) substrate. At a substrate temperature of $700\phantom{\rule{0.3em}{0ex}}\mathrm{K}$ the CrFe alloy forms monolayer stripes in the step flow growth mode. We have measured magnetic properties of the monolayer alloy for $0.75\ensuremath{\leqslant}x\ensuremath{\leqslant}1$ using Kerr magnetometry. At a constant relative temperature $t=T∕{T}_{C}$ the saturation value of the Kerr rotation shows a maximum at $x=0.95$ an…
Magnon detection using a ferroic collinear multilayer spin valve
2018
Information transport and processing by pure magnonic spin currents in insulators is a promising alternative to conventional charge-current-driven spintronic devices. The absence of Joule heating and reduced spin wave damping in insulating ferromagnets have been suggested for implementing efficient logic devices. After the successful demonstration of a majority gate based on the superposition of spin waves, further components are required to perform complex logic operations. Here, we report on magnetization orientation-dependent spin current detection signals in collinear magnetic multilayers inspired by the functionality of a conventional spin valve. In Y3Fe5O12|CoO|Co, we find that the de…
Anodization and anodic oxides
2018
Anodizing is a low-temperature, low-cost electrochemical process allowing for the growth, on the surface of valve metals and valve metal alloys, of anodic oxides of tunable composition and properties. This article is an overview on theoretical aspects concerning the general aspects of the kinetics of growth of barrier and porous anodic oxides and some of their present and possibly future technological applications of anodic oxides. The first part of the article is devoted to anodic oxide growth models, from Guntherschulze and Betz work (in 1934) to the more recent results on barrier and porous oxide films. The second part is focused on industrial processes to fabricate anodic oxides and the…
Low intrinsic carrier density LSMO/Alq3/AlOx/Co organic spintronic devices
2018
The understanding of spin injection and transport in organic spintronic devices is still incomplete, with some experiments showing magnetoresistance and others not detecting it. We have investigated the transport properties of a large number of tris-(8-hydroxyquinoline)aluminum-based organic spintronic devices with an electrical resistance greater than 5 MΩ that did not show magnetoresistance. Their transport properties could be described satisfactorily by known models for organic semiconductors. At high voltages (>2 V), the results followed the model of space charge limited current with a Poole-Frenkel mobility. At low voltages (∼0.1 V), that are those at which t…
