Eddy covariance and sap flow measurement of energy and mass exchange of woody crops in a Mediterranean environment

2012

Evapotranspiration estimation by micrometeorological techniques through the assessment of mass and energy exchanges in the soil-plant-atmosphere continuum (SPAC) is a very active research area, involving both well-known and novel measurement techniques. A crucial aspect in validating experimental results is the integration of independent measurements of mass and energy exchanges in the SPAC. To this aim, the development and validation of an integrated approach in major tree crop species, involving different independent techniques, are presented. Eddy covariance estimates of ET fluxes were compared to up-scaled sap flow measurements in olive, orange and grapevine, three important Mediterrane…

Scaling carbon fluxes from eddy covariance sites to globe: synthesis and evaluation of the FLUXCOM approach

2020

FLUXNET comprises globally distributed eddy-covariance-based estimates of carbon fluxes between the biosphere and the atmosphere. Since eddy covariance flux towers have a relatively small footprint and are distributed unevenly across the world, upscaling the observations is necessary to obtain global-scale estimates of biosphere–atmosphere exchange. Based on cross-consistency checks with atmospheric inversions, sun-induced fluorescence (SIF) and dynamic global vegetation models (DGVMs), here we provide a systematic assessment of the latest upscaling efforts for gross primary production (GPP) and net ecosystem exchange (NEE) of the FLUXCOM initiative, where different machine learning methods…

Ranking drivers of global carbon and energy fluxes over land

2015

The accurate estimation of carbon and heat fluxes at global scale is paramount for future policy decisions in the context of global climate change. This paper analyzes the relative relevance of potential remote sensing and meteorological drivers of global carbon and energy fluxes over land. The study is done in an indirect way via upscaling both Gross Primary Production (GPP) and latent energy (LE) using Gaussian Process regression (GPR). In summary, GPR is successfully compared to multivariate linear regression (RMSE gain of +4.17% in GPP and +7.63% in LE) and kernel ridge regression (+2.91% in GPP and +3.07% in LE). The best GP models are then studied in terms of explanatory power based o…

Testing two temporal upscaling schemes for the estimation of the time variability of the actual evapotranspiration

2015

Temporal availability of grapes actual evapotranspiration is an emerging issue since vineyards farms are more and more converted from rainfed to irrigated agricultural systems. The manuscript aims to verify the accuracy of the actual evapotranspiration retrieval coupling a single source energy balance approach and two different temporal upscaling schemes. The first scheme tests the temporal upscaling of the main input variables, namely the NDVI, albedo and LST; the second scheme tests the temporal upscaling of the energy balance output, the actual evapotranspiration. The temporal upscaling schemes were implemented on: i) airborne remote sensing data acquired monthly during a whole irrigatio…

Comparison of clinical and environmental samples of Legionella pneumophila at the nucleotide sequence level

2009

Legionella pneumophila serogroup 1 is the most common etiological agent of legionellosis. We have used clinical and environmental isolates from different sources to compare their genetic variability. We have obtained the nucleotide sequence for six protein-coding loci, included in the SBT scheme for L. pneumophila, and three intergenic regions from 127 samples, 47 of environmental origin and 80 from clinical samples. Levels of genetic variability were found to be higher in the environmental than in the clinical samples, but these did not represent a mere subset of the former. Not a single case of full identity between clinical and environmental isolates was found, which raises the possibili…

A Problem of Optimization in a Case of Foreign Investment

2000

The aim of the paper is to solve an optimization problem in an economic system with a central bank and a set of private agents. Each agent aims to maximize her expected utility, with rational expectations and being risk averse. The agents follow a profitability-risk criterium to face the portfolio diversification problem between foreign or domestic investment. An explicit formula for the optimal amount of foreign investment as a function of the expected exchange rate and an explicit formula for the exchange rate are obtained. These formulas show the hard influence of the expected exchange rate, the variance and the risk aversion on the agents’ decisions.

Characterization of MEMS accelerometer self-noise by means of PSD and Allan Variance analysis

2017

In this paper, we have studied the sources of error of a low-cost 3-axis MEMS accelerometer by means of Power Spectral Density and Allan Variance techniques. These techniques were applied to the signals acquired from ten identical devices to characterize the variability of the sensor produced by the same manufacturer. Our analysis showed as identically produced accelerometer have somehow variable behavior in particular at low frequency. It is therefore of paramount importance before their use in Inertial Navigation or Earthquakes Monitoring System, a complete characterization of each single sensors.

Comparing Correlation Matrix Estimators Via Kullback-Leibler Divergence

2011

We use a self-averaging measure called Kullback-Leibler divergence to evaluate the performance of four different correlation estimators: Fourier, Pearson, Maximum Likelihood and Hayashi-Yoshida estimator. The study uses simulated transaction prices for a large number of stocks and different data generating mechanisms, including synchronous and non-synchronous transactions, homogeneous and heterogeneous inter-transaction time. Different distributions of stock returns, i.e. multivariate Normal and multivariate Student's t-distribution, are also considered. We show that Fourier and Pearson estimators are equivalent proxies of the `true' correlation matrix within all the settings under analysis…

Repeatability of Feather Mite Prevalence and Intensity in Passerine Birds

2014

Understanding why host species differ so much in symbiont loads and how this depends on ecological host and symbiont traits is a major issue in the ecology of symbiosis. A first step in this inquiry is to know whether observed differences among host species are species-specific traits or more related with host-symbiont environmental conditions. Here we analysed the repeatability (R) of the intensity and the prevalence of feather mites to partition within- and among-host species variance components. We compiled the largest dataset so far available: 119 Paleartic passerine bird species, 75,944 individual birds, ca. 1.8 million mites, seven countries, 23 study years. Several analyses and appro…

Mixed-model of ANOVA for measurement reproducibility in proteomics

2009

This work is a statistical analysis of reproducibility of a MALDI-TOF mass spectrometry experiment. Its aim is to evaluate measurement variability and compare peak intensities from two types of MALDI-TOF platforms. We compared and commented on the abilities of Principal Component Analysis and mixed-model analysis of variance to evaluate the biological variability and the technical variability of peak intensities in different patients. The properties and hypotheses of both methods are summarized and applied to spectra from plasma of patients with Hodgkin lymphoma. Principal Component Analysis checks rapidly the balance between the two variabilities; however, a mixed-model analysis of varianc…
