Abstract Vector-borne diseases are a worldwide threat to human health. Often, no vaccines or treatments exist. Thus, personal protection products play an essential role in limiting transmission. The World Health Organization (WHO) arm-in-cage (AIC) test is the most common method for evaluating the efficacy of topical repellents, but it remains unclear whether AIC testing conditions recreate the mosquito landing rates in the field. A One Health initiative has been implemented for fascioliasis control in a human hyperendemic area for the first time. The area selected for this multidisciplinary approach is the Northern Bolivian Altiplano, where the highest prevalences and intensities in humans have been reported. Schistosomiasis reaches Europe

International audience; An outbreak of urogenital schistosomiasis has been detected in Europe, with patients affected in France,1,2 Germany,1,2 and Italy. The infection originated in Corsica, in a river north of Porto-Vecchio, a popular tourist destination (figure). The introduction of schistosomiasis is believed to be associated with infected people arriving from a region endemic for the exclusively African parasite, Schistosoma haematobium and disseminating parasite eggs through their urine into snail breeding sites along the river.

EPIDEMIOLOGY OF BOUTONNEUSE FEVER IN WESTERN SICILY

The distribution and prevalence of spotted fever group rickettsial infection in the ixodid dog tick Rhipicephalus sanguineus were found to occur at a rate of 19.7% with variation related to geographic and sociooccupational factors. A higher rate of infection was demonstrated in ticks removed from dogs associated with documented cases of boutonneuse fever. The results fit into available clinical and seroepidemiologic data on Rickettsia conorii infection in western Sicily.

Effect of amorphous sequences on the longitudinal acoustic modes in partially crystalline polymers. I. Transfer matrix method

A novel theoretical scheme is developed which enables the determination of the LAM-like vibrations of polymer chains made up of crystalline and amorphous parts as they occur in partially crystalline structures. The boundary conditions effective at the junction points are formulated in terms of the compliances of the associated amorphous sequences. These compliances can be derived from their eigenfrequencies and eigenvectors in a disconnected state. Fast Axial Scanning in 3D Imaging

We establish the conditions for obtaining fast axial 3D microscopy with constant magnification, invariant resolution, and symmetrical displacement range. Expression and cellular localization of the Nef protein from human immunodeficiency virus-1 in stably transfected B-cells.

Nef protein, encoded by the regulatory nef gene of human immunodeficiency virus type 1 (HIV-1), was expressed in the B-cell line Raji. The cells were stably transfected with plasmids containing the nef transcriptional cassette. They expressed Nef with an Mr of 27,000; the yield could be augmented by incubation with the tumor promoter 12-O-tetradecanoylphorbol-13-acetate. The intracellular localization of Nef was analyzed applying immunofluorescence microscopy using a confocal laser scanning microscope.
