Testing a theoretical resistance law for overland flow under simulated rainfall with different types of vegetation

Abstract In this paper a recently theoretically deduced flow resistance equation, based on a power-velocity profile, was tested using data collected for overland flow under simulated rainfall carried out in plots with vegetation. The available data were obtained exploring a wide range of rainfall intensities (from 60 to 181 mm h−1) and slopes (from 3.6 to 39.6%), and with four different types of vegetation. An electronic nose based on an array of six metal oxide semiconductor sensors was used to monitor the oxidative status of virgin olive oils (VOO) during storage. VOO samples, with and without phenolic compounds, were stored at 60 °C for 7 weeks. Once a week, absorbance at 232 and 270 nm, oxidized stability index, electronic nose, and sensory analysis were evaluated. Linear discriminant analysis models were constructed in order to classify samples according to oxidative levels. The use of floating cover directly applied on top of the crop is rapidly increasing on leafy vegetables like lettuce as a simple, inexpensive and effective technique to induce earliness. Two lettuce types, ‘Iceberg’ and ‘Romaine’, under two different crop management systems (black plastic mulch and black plastic mulch combined with floating cover) were tested in Sicily in 2007. Plug type transplants were planted at the end of January on double rows. The nonwoven floating cover was applied after transplanting. Abstract The agricultural practices applied in pre-harvest greatly influence the presence and the levels of microorganisms in fresh produce. Among these, Listeria monocytogenes represents one of the most lethal foodborne pathogens associated with vegetables. Calorimetric investigation of the vulcanization of factice

Sulphur factice is produced from a mixture of a vegetable oil and sulphur at temperatures between 130 and 160‡C. The slow exothermal vulcanization results in rubber-like elastomers. We have developed an isothermal calorimeter for measurements both in the liquid and the solid state and simulated the production process at the laboratory scale. The compensating calorimeter consists of a hot plate equipped with thin aluminium rods descending into a Dewar vessel. Besides optimization of the temperature control, remarkable savings of time were achieved by previous elaidinization of the oil using hydrosulphide.

Huanglongbing modifies quality components and flavonoid content of 'Valencia' oranges.

BACKGROUND: In order to evaluate the effect of citrus greening disease, or Huanglongbing (HLB), on quality components and flavonoid contents of 'Valencia' oranges, fruit from non-infected trees (control), from infected trees but symptom-less (asymptomatic) and from infected trees and showing clear HLB symptoms (symptomatic) were harvested in March and in May, 2013. Fruit peel, pulp and juice were separated, the main quality components were determined, and hesperidin, nobiletin, tangeretin, narirutin and didymin were quantified using liquid chromatography. Abstract This research aims to assess the impacts of soil use management on runoff, soil losses, and their main soil controls in vegetable cropland (CROP), tilled olives (OT), and grass-covered olive orchards (OGC) on Leptosol in Croatia. Soil analysis and rainfall simulation experiments were conducted to quantify runoff (Run), soil, and nutrient losses. Bulk density (BD) was significantly higher at OT plots, in addition to the CROP plots. In the present study, four high-pressure (HP) treatments (100, 200, 300, and 400 MPa) of 9 min duration were evaluated to assess their effect on the lipid fraction (fat-soluble vitamins and fatty acid profile) of an orange juice-milk and a vegetable beverage. After HP treatment, nonsignificant changes in vitamin D(2) and D(3) contents were observed for both beverages. An increase in vitamin E activity was observed in HP beverages when pressures >100 MPa were applied, mainly due to an increase in α-tocopherol content.
