A single method for recovery and concentration of enteric viruses and bacteria from fresh-cut vegetables

Fresh-cut vegetables are prone to be contaminated with foodborne pathogens during growth, harvest, transport and further processing and handling. As most of these products are generally eaten raw or mildly treated, there is an increase in the number of outbreaks caused by viruses and bacteria associated with fresh vegetables. Foodborne pathogens are usually present at very low levels and have to be concentrated (i.e. viruses) or enriched (i.e. bacteria) to enhance their detection. A voltammetric e-tongue tool for the emulation of the sensorial analysis and the discrimination of vegetal milks

[EN] The relevance of plant-based food alternatives to dairy products, such as vegetable milks, has been growing in recent decades, and the development of systems capable of classifying and predicting the sensorial profile of such products is interesting. In this context, a methodology to perform the sensorial analysis of vegetable milks (oat, soya, rice, almond and tiger nut), based on 12 parameters, was validated. Abstract To develop an advanced pyrolysis process for various biomass-derived feedstocks and improve product quality and yield, in-depth investigations into the reaction mechanisms are needed. This paper reports on pyrolysis experiments (Py-GC/MSD and FID) with model compounds including the sodium salts of stearic (C18), oleic (C18:1), and linoleic (C18:2) acids principally obtained from alkaline hydrolysis of vegetable oils. Application of solid-phase microextraction for determining phenylurea herbicides and their homologous anilines from vegetables.

Abstract Residues of metobromuron, monolinuron and linuron herbicides and their aniline homologous were analyzed in carrots, onions and potatoes by solid-phase microextraction (SPME) performed with a polyacrylate fiber. A juice was obtained from food samples that were further diluted, and an aliquot was extracted after sodium chloride (14%) addition and pH control. At pH 4 only the phenylureas were extracted. A new extraction at pH 11 allowed the extraction of phenylureas plus homologous aniline metabolites. Application of matrix solid-phase dispersion to the determination of a new generation of fungicides in fruits and vegetables.

A method based on matrix solid-phase dispersion (MSPD) and gas chromatography to determine eight fungicides in fruits and vegetables is described. Fungicide residues were identified and quantified using nitrogen-phosphorus detection and electron-capture detection connected in parallel and confirmed by mass spectrometric detection. The method required 0.5 g of sample, C18 bonded silica as dispersant sorbent, silica as clean-up sorbent and ethyl acetate as eluting solvent. Abstract A quantitative matrix solid-phase dispersion and liquid chromatography–atmospheric pressure chemical ionization mass spectrometry (LC–APCI–MS) method is outlined for the simultaneous analysis of dithiocarbamates (DTCs) and their degradation products in plants. Where Does Nε-Trimethyllysine for the Carnitine Biosynthesis in Mammals Come from?

N(ε)-trimethyllysine (TML) is a non-protein amino acid which takes part in the biosynthesis of carnitine. In mammals, the breakdown of endogenous proteins containing TML residues is recognized as starting point for the carnitine biosynthesis. Here, we document that one of the main sources of TML could be the vegetables which represent an important part of daily alimentation for most mammals. A HPLC-ESI-MS/MS method, which we previously developed for the analysis of N(G)-methylarginines, was utilized to quantitate TML in numerous vegetables.
