Effects of Physical and Cognitive Training on Gait Speed and Cognition in Older Adults : A Randomized Controlled Trial

2021

Gait speed is a measure of health and functioning. Physical and cognitive determinants of gait are amenable to interventions, but best practices remain unclear. We investigated the effects of a 12‐month physical and cognitive training (PTCT) on gait speed, dual‐task cost in gait speed, and executive functions (EFs) compared to physical training (PT) (ISRCTN52388040). Community‐dwelling older adults, who did not meet physical activity recommendations, were recruited (n=314). PT included supervised walking/balance (once weekly) and resistance/balance training (once weekly), home exercises (2‐3 times weekly) and moderate aerobic activity 150 minutes/week in bouts of >10 minutes. PTCT included …

Muscle-tendon mechanics and energetics during walking, running and jumping.

2012

In the human lower limb, muscles and tendon tend to interact in an efficient manner during common movements like walking, running and jumping. This pattern of interaction exploits the ability of muscles to produce forces efficiently at low shortening velocities, whilst tendons act as springs that help to store elastic energy during the contact phase, and return a large proportion of the energy in the pushoff phase. This pattern of muscletendon interaction can be disrupted in novel tasks or as a consequence of ageing or disease, resulting in a decrease in movement efficiency. peerReviewed

Clustering of reported activity destinations and use of active transport among older adults

2022

Background Conducting everyday activities out-of-home may accumulate a large share of older adults' daily physical, especially if active transportation is used. Environmental features in home neighborhood may motivate for higher physical activity, but the role of features around destinations is less known. Our goal was to study 1) clustering of older adults' reported activity destinations, and 2) whether transport mode to a destination was associated with characteristics of destination clusters. Methods Data comprise AGNES study participants (901 community-dwelling people aged 75-85 years living in city of Jyväskylä, Finland; 57% women) combined with geospatial data. Using digital mapping, …

Biopolymer Recovery from Aerobic Granular Sludge and Conventional Flocculent Sludge in Treating Industrial Wastewater: Preliminary Analysis of Differ…

2022

The recovery of biopolymers from sewage sludge could be a crucial step in implementing circular economy principles in wastewater treatment plants (WWTP). In this frame, the present study was aimed at evaluating the simultaneous production of polyhydroxyalkanoates (PHA) and extracellular polymeric substances (EPS) obtainable from the treatment of agro-industrial wastewater. Two biological enrichment systems, aerobic granular sludge (AGS) and a conventional activated sludge operating as a sequencing batch reactor (SBR), were monitored for 204 and 186 days, respectively. The maximum biopolymers accumulation capacity was close to 0.60 mgPHA-EPS gVSS−1 in the AGS when operating at 3 kgCODm…

Gestions de l'eau et du développement urbain dans l'espace dijonnais :quels modes d'intégration territoriale ?

2006

Urban growth, jointed to technical networks, contributes to human pressure on water resources. In the meantime, the water French policy put management of urban development in accordance with catchments and hydrologic dynamics; that makes districts and intermunicipal groupings adopt new areas and action systems. The urban area of Dijon is located in three catchments and above a wide groundwater. This case shows urban water management gives greater place to precariousness and common character of water resources, even if institutional responses mainly concern town planning regulation.

Levels and Potential Health Hazards of Chlorinated Pesticidesin Surface Water Samples of Charsadda Area of Pakistan Using SPME-GC-ECD Technique

2021

In the present study, we determined the levels of chlorinated pesticide residues in surface water samples collected from the Charsadda district (KPK, Pakistan). SPME-GC-ECD with COMBI PAL CTC autosampler was used for extraction and analysis of 20 organochlorine pesticides in the collected water samples. For maximum efficiency of the SPME procedure, several parameters were studied, including the extraction and desorption time of the fiber, solution pH, agitation of samples, and stirring speed, etc. This method showed good liner response, with R2 values in the range of 0.9887 to 0.9999 for all pesticides. This method also provided good percent recoveries at 1 µg L−1 (87.5 to 106.0%) and at 2 …

A new approach for geological faults detection

2004

This paper will introduce a new approach, mainly based on wavelets transform and mathematical morphology, for the detection of geological faults in satellite and aerial photos. This can be useful for territorial analysis, digital cartography and the use of geographical information systems. The proposed method is fast enough and unsupervised. Different techniques will be compared and some examples on real data will be presented to indicate the applicability of these methods.

Anomaly detection using one-class SVM with wavelet packet decomposition

2011

Anomaly detection has become a popular research topic in the field of machine learning. Support vector machine is one anomaly detection technique and it is coming one the most widely used. In this research, anomaly detection is applied to road condition monitoring, especially pothole detection, using accelerometer data. The proposed concept includes data preprocessing, feature extraction, feature selection and classification. Accelerometer data was first filtered and segmented, after which features were extracted with frequency- and time-domain functions, with genetic programming and with wavelet packet decomposition. A classification model was built using support vector machine and the cal…

MVC Frameworks in Web Development

2012

With the increased demand of complex, well-scalable and maintainable web applications, the MVC architecture is increasing in popularity and frameworks (whether they utilize the MVC architecture or not) are quickly becoming de facto –standard in web development. This Bachelor’s Thesis introduces the use of MVC architecture in web development and how several web application frameworks make use of it. This research introduces the concepts of both the MVC architecture and web application frameworks but does not go into the basics of web development. Three examples of web application frameworks that utilize the MVC architecture are introduced. Due to the constraints provided by the size of this …
