Layout and performance of RPC used in the Argo-YBJ experiment

The layout of the RPCs, used in the Argo-YBJ experiment to image with a high space-time granularity the atmospheric shower, is described in this paper. The detector has been assembled to provide both digital and analog informations in order to cover a wide particle density range with a time accuracy of 1 ns. The experimental results obtained operating the chambers in streamer mode at sea level with a standard gas mixture are presented. (c) 2006 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

Sono presentate alcune simulazioni con il codice MCNP5 di rivelatori di fotoni di tipo HPGe (High Purity Germanium) per la valutazione di efficienze per alcune geometrie usualmente impiegate in misure di tipo radioprotezionistico (Marinelli beakers, a disco, etc). Il modello del rivelatore è validato mediante confronti con determinazioni sperimentali di sorgenti puntiformi calibrate di tipo “single line”, caratterizzate dalla emissione di un solo fotone gamma per disintegrazione. Micromorphological approach to the systematics of Mediterranean Isoëtes species (Isoëtaceae, Lycopodiophyta): analysis of the megaspore surface

Megaspore ornamentation is one of the few morphological characters used in the taxonomy of the genus Isoëtes. In the present work, we test the application of this character for distinguishing some Isoëtes species occurring in the Mediterranean: Isoëtes sicula, which according to some authors should be included as a variety in I. histrix, and the recently described I. todaroana, whose affinity with other taxa is currently unknown. Two additional species (I. duriei, I. velata) were also included in the analysis. Decontamination of a barrier facility using microisolator cages and provisional partitioning

In 2000, the authors found endemic infections of mouse hepatitis virus, minute virus of mice, Syphacia obvelata, and Myobia musculi among mice in a large barrier facility at the University of Mainz. To eliminate the infections, they subdivided the facility into two distinct hygiene units. However, architectural constraints made it impossible to completely separate the HVAC systems of both hygiene units and to establish adequate personnel locks. Information Technology (IT) security breaches and the extent of damage they may cause to an organization are inherently uncertain. Therefore, managers’ decisions about whether to make IT security investment (ITSI) and how much, depend upon a subjective assessment of the economic value of the investment and the likelihood of the damage to the organization. When managers delay or fail to decide on whether and how much to invest in IT security, it can make organizations vulnerable to operational and strategic perils.
