Controlling the carrier-envelope phase of few-cycle focused laser beams with a dispersive beam expander

We report on a procedure to focalize few-cycle laser pulses in dispersive media with controlled waveform. Stationarity of the carrier-envelope phase for extended depth of focus is attained by shaping the spatial dispersion of the ultrashort beam. An adjustable group velocity is locally tuned in order to match a prescribed phase velocity at focus. A hybrid diffractive-refractive lens system is proposed to drive the wavefield to an immersion microscope objective under convenient broadband modulation. Numerical simulations demonstrate robustness over positioning of this dispersive beam expander.

Manipulation of fast light using photorefractive beam fanning

Light pulse group velocity manipulations due to the specific dispersion of a medium (so-called “slow” and “fast” light phenomena) can be obtained on the basis of several mechanisms. One of these techniques is two-wave mixing in a photorefractive crystal. This work presents a modification of this method, exploiting the strong beam fanning in Sb-doped Sn2P2S6 crystals. Our experimental results demonstrate a “fast light” behavior of Gaussian pulses transmitted through a Sn2P2S6:Sb sample. Parametric Frequency Conversion of Short Optical Pulses Controlled by a CW Background

International audience; We predict that parametric sum-frequency generation of an ultra-short pulse may result from the mixing of an ultra-short optical pulse with a quasi-continuous wave control. We analytically show that the intensity, time duration and group velocity of the generated idler pulse may be controlled in a stable manner by adjusting the intensity level of the background pump.

Photo-acoustic excitation and detection of guided ultrasonic waves in bone samples covered by a soft coating layer

Photo-acoustic (PA) excitation was combined with skeletal quantitative ultrasound (QUS) for multi-mode ultrasonic assessment of human long bones. This approach permits tailoring of the ultrasonic excitation and detection so as to efficiently detect the fundamental flexural guided wave (FFGW) through a coating of soft tissue. FFGW is a clinically relevant indicator of cortical thickness. An OPO laser with tunable optical wavelength, was used to excite a photo-acoustic source in the shaft of a porcine femur. A fast recursive algorithm for the computation of axial moments

This paper describes a fast algorithm to compute local axial moments used for the detection of objects of interest in images. The basic idea is grounded on the elimination of redundant operations while computing axial moments for two neighboring angles of orientation. The main result is that the complexity of recursive computation of axial moments becomes independent of the total number of computed moments in a given point, i.e. it is of the order O(N) where N is the data size. Unfavourable interaction of microalbuminuria and mildly reduced creatinine clearance on aortic stiffness in essential hypertension

The aim of our study was to assess the independent relationships of urinary albumin excretion rate (AER), of creatinine clearance (CrCl) and of their interaction with aortic stiffness in hypertensive patients without overt renal insufficiency. We studied 222 untreated nondiabetic essential hypertensives. In patients with reliable 24-h urine collections, AER and CrCl were determined. First lamina hybridization of high performance CFRP with Kevlar fibers: Effect on impact behavior and nondestructive evaluation

The impact behavior of a carbon-Kevlar hybrid composite, widely used in sport car manufacturing, was evaluated. To highlight the hybridization effect, comparative analyses were performed with the basic CFRP laminate having the same lay-up. Tensile, bending and low velocity impact tests, followed by nondestructive inspections, highlighted that Kevlar first lamina hybridization leads to an increment in specific impact strength, up to 55%. Morphometric and hydraulic geometry assessment of a gully in SW Spain

Abstract Gully erosion represents one of the most significant types of land degradation in the Mediterranean areas, giving place to important on- and off-site effects. In this paper, a second-order gully located in SW Spain is analyzed. Along the gully, 28 cross-sections were established and measured with a Leica TCRM1102 laser total station, approximately every 6 months from 2001 to 2007. The sections were located at variable distance, placing them in areas where active erosion was evident.
