The exact solution of the Riemann problem with non-zero tangential velocities in relativistic hydrodynamics

2000

We have generalised the exact solution of the Riemann problem in special relativistic hydrodynamics for arbitrary tangential flow velocities. The solution is obtained by solving the jump conditions across shocks plus an ordinary differential equation arising from the self-similarity condition along rarefaction waves, in a similar way as in purely normal flow. The dependence of the solution on the tangential velocities is analysed, and the impact of this result on the development of multidimensional relativistic hydrodynamic codes (of Godunov type) is discussed.

Stopping a slow-light soliton: an exact solution

2005

We investigate propagation of a slow-light soliton in Λ-type media such as atomic vapours and Bose–Einstein condensates. We show that the group velocity of the soliton monotonically decreases with the intensity of the controlling laser field, which decays exponentially after the laser is switched off. The shock wave of the vanishing controlling field overtakes the slow soliton and stops it, while the optical information is recorded in the medium in the form of spatially localized polarization. In the strongly nonlinear regime we find an explicit exact solution describing the whole process.

Nonlinear theory of slow light.

2011

In the framework of the nonlinear Λ model, propagation of solitons was analysed in atomic vapours and Bose–Einstein condensates. The complicated nonlinear interplay between fast and slow-light solitons in a Λ -type medium was shown to facilitate control of its optical transparency and formation of optical gates. An exact analytical description was given for the deceleration, stopping and revival of slow-light solitons in the experimentally relevant non-adiabatic regime. A stopping slow-light soliton imprints a localized immobile polarization pattern in the medium, which, as explicitly demonstrated here, can be used as a bit of readable optical memory. The whole process can be controlled wi…

NGC1600 - Cluster or Field Elliptical?

2008

A study of the galaxy distribution in the field of the elliptical galaxy NGC1600 has been undertaken. Although this galaxy is often classified as a member of a loose group, all the neighbouring galaxies are much fainter and could be taken as satellites of NGC1600. The number density profile of galaxies in the field of this galaxy shows a decline with radius, with evidence of a background at approximately 1.3 Mpc. The density and number density profile are consistent with that found for other isolated early-type galaxies. NGC1600 appears as an extended source in X-rays, and the center of the X-ray emission seems not to coincide with the center of the galaxy. The velocity distribution of neig…

Superfluid turbulence in rotating containers: Phenomenological description of the influence of the wall

2005

In this paper a previous equation for the evolution of vortex line density L in counterflow superfluid turbulence in rotating containers is generalized, in order to take into account the influence of the walls. This model incorporates the effects of counterflow velocity V and of angular velocity {omega} of the container, and introduces corrective terms depending on {delta}/d, {delta} being the intervortex spacing, of the order L{sup -1/2}, and d the diameter of the channel. The stability of the solutions for L, for several regimes of averaged counterflow velocity V and angular velocity {omega}, is analyzed. Our mathematical analysis reveals that qualitative consistency allows us to reduce t…

THE ACCELERATING JET OF 3C 279

2012

Analysis of the proper motions of the subparsec scale jet of the quasar 3C 279 at 15 GHz with the Very Long Baseline Array shows significant accelerations in four of nine superluminal features. Analysis of these motions is combined with the analysis of flux density light curves to constrain values of Lorentz factor and viewing angle (and their derivatives) for each component. The data for each of these components are consistent with significant changes to the Lorentz factor, viewing angle, and azimuthal angle, suggesting jet bending with changes in speed. We see that for these observed components Lorentz factors are in the range Γ = 10-41, viewing angles are in the range = 0.°1-5.°0, and in…

THEORETISGHE UNTERSUCHUNGEN UBER DEN EINFLUSS DER VERWITTERUNGSSCHICHT AUF DAS SPEKTRUM ELASTISCHER WELLEN IN DER REFLEXIONSSEISMIK

1957

The following assumptions are made in the mathematical treatment of the problem. Below a plane earth's surface there is a three-layered elastic medium the interfaces of which are parallel to the earth's surface. The uppermost layer represents the weathered layer in which the velocity of propagation of seismic waves increases linearly with depth. The two lower layers, the so-called intermediate layer and the substratum each have a constant velocity. The surface of the earth is acted on simultaneously by a normal pressure N in the form of a Heaviside pulse. The seismic wave thus generated is propagated through the elastic media. The aim of the investigation is to study the shape of the wave 1…

Extraction of cluster parameters with future Sunyaev-Zel'dovich observations

2003

The Sunyaev-Zel'dovich (SZ) effect of galaxy clusters is characterized by three parameters: Compton parameter, electron temperature and cluster peculiar velocity. In the present study we consider the problem of extracting these parameters using multi-frequency SZ observations only. We show that there exists a parameter degeneracy which can be broken with an appropriate choice of frequencies. As a result we discuss the optimal choice of observing frequencies from a theoretical point of view. Finally, we analyze the systematic errors (of the order micro K) on the SZ measurement introduced by finite bandwidths, and suggest a possible method of reducing these errors.

Impact of the quenching of gA on the sensitivity of 0νββ experiments

2017

Detection of the neutrinoless $\ensuremath{\beta}\ensuremath{\beta}$ ($0\ensuremath{\nu}\ensuremath{\beta}\ensuremath{\beta}$) decay is of high priority in the particle- and neutrino-physics communities. The detectability of this decay mode is strongly influenced by the value of the weak axial-vector coupling constant ${g}_{A}$. The recent nuclear-model analyses of $\ensuremath{\beta}$ and $\ensuremath{\beta}\ensuremath{\beta}$ decays suggest that the value of ${g}_{A}$ could be dramatically quenched, reaching ratios of ${g}_{A}^{\mathrm{free}}/{g}_{A}\ensuremath{\approx}4$, where ${g}_{A}^{\mathrm{free}}=1.27$ is the free, neutron-decay, value of ${g}_{A}$. The effects of this quenching ap…
