Economic Diversification and Empowerment of Local Human Resources: Could Singapore Be a Model for the GCC Countries?

This chapter analyses the similarities and differences between the GCC and Singapore with regard to economic diversification strategies. The key for a successful and, thus, sustainable diversification process for the GCC is to reduce the high dependence of the economic revenues away from the hydrocarbon sector. However, an ongoing concern is the continuing need of high foreign workforce that collides with the demands for greater employment opportunities for national citizens. The challenges of those nationalisation strategies will be examined at the example of the Sultanate of Oman.

Stratégie de diversification et structure de propriété des entreprises françaises

International audience; Notre étude s'intéresse à l'impact de l'actionnariat des dirigeants sur la stratégie de diversification des entreprises françaises. Nous analysons l'incidence de la participation au capital du dirigeant sur cette stratégie. Un certain nombre de variables de contrôle sont introduites puisqu'elles peuvent entraver la capacité des dirigeants à diversifier. Nous testons notre hypothèse relative à l'existence de différences dans le degré de diversification selon la structure de l'actionnariat du dirigeant, sur un échantillon de 266 sociétés françaises cotées à la Bourse de Paris.

The Diversification of Sicilian Farms: A Way to Sustainable Rural Development

Rural areas still suffer from a lack of sustainable development, and the diversification of farms may be a step in the right direction. The paper provides a detailed picture of the diversification of Sicilian farms into tourism services. Specifically, we propose a simple indicator of localization intensity of agritourism farms and explore their spatial distribution at municipality level. Our study highlights that Sicilian farms rarely diversify into tourism services, despite being situated in attractive areas. That said, some significant spatial clusters of municipalities where agritourism farms are highly concentrated do emerge from the study.

Crop diversification is a common agricultural policy objective. However, the determinants and impacts of crop diversification are heterogeneous and depend on a range of crop-specific characteristics. Index-based measurements of crop diversification, common in the agriculture economics literature, are unable to account for this heterogeneity. Using two national panel surveys from Malawi and Zambia, we develop a multinomial treatment effects model to examine the determinants of adopting seven discreet cropping systems and their impacts on maize productivity and crop income stability.
