Relationship between video head impulse test (vHIT) and caloric test in patients with vestibular neuritis.

2016

Abstract Introduction and objectives The caloric test is the gold standard for the loss of vestibular function diagnosis. The video head impulse test (vHIT) assesses the same reflex by using a video-assisted examination of the impulsive manoeuvre. We intend to compare the variation of results of the vHIT and the caloric test in patients with vestibular neuritis with respect to their initial condition at two different moments of their evolution and to check the level of correlation between them and with that of the DHI test. Methods We explored 20 patients with neuritis by using both vHIT and the caloric test on the same day. We assessed the correlation between these two tests and with the D…

A multicenter observational study on the role of comorbidities in the recurrent episodes of benign paroxysmal positional vertigo

2014

Objective: Primary objective of this study was to find a statistical link between the most worldwide comorbidities affecting the elderly population (hypertension, diabetes, osteoarthrosis, osteoporosis and depression) and recurrent episodes of BPPV. Secondary objective was defining possible "groups of risk" for people suffering recurrent positional vertigo related to the presence of a well documented comorbidity. Methods: This was an observational, cross-sectional, multicenter, spontaneous, non-pharmacological study. The data of 1092 patients suffering BPPV evaluated in 11 different Departments of Otolaryngology, Otoneurology and Neurology, referring Centers for positional vertigo evaluatio…

Treatment with a new nutraceutical compound on patients suffering from balance disorders: Dizziness handicap inventory scores

2019

Objective: Purpose: To investigate whether treatment with citicoline, in association with vitamin B6, ginger, melissa and ViNitrox, could improve Dizziness Handicap Inventory (DHI) scores in patients affected by dizziness and vertigo. Materials and methods: Fifty-five consecutive subjects (ranging from 49 to 71 years of age) who complained of dizziness and vertigo of unknown origins were treated with citicoline (500 mg) along with ginger (200 mg), vitamin B6 (2.1 mg), melissa (300 mg) and ViNitrox (150 mg) twice per day for a two-month period. Patients underwent pure tone audiometry (PTA) and a neurotological visit including spontaneous nystagmus testing, bedside examination and the Romberg…

207 Diagnosis of Anderson-Fabry Disease in Childhood. What Should We Focus on?

2004

Background: Anderson-Fabry disease (FD) is an X-linked lysosomal storage disorder which also affects female carriers and has an early onset of symptoms in childhood in both genders. Signs and symptoms are frequently misunderstood and often diagnosis is made approximately 10–20 years after their onset. This has been clearly demonstrated by Fabry outcome survey (FOS) a European database on the natural history of FD and the effects of enzyme replacement therapy with agalsidase alfa (Replagal). Methods: Demographic data on 82 children (40 boys and 42 girls) below 18 years of age, with a median age at FOS entry of 12.9 (0.7–17.9) were analysed Results: Most frequently reported symptoms (60–80%) …

Vertigo in childhood: A methodological approach

2012

Children complaints dizziness merit meticulous evaluation to differentially diagnose a vestibular disease. A syndrome mimicking certain classic signs and symptoms of adult vestibular disorders may be presents in children, such as benign paroxysmal positional vertigo, usually associated with aging. Benign paroxysmal vertigo, in which migraine is a manifestation, with sudden onset of dizziness is a rare peripheral vestibular disorder that is commonly ignored or misdiagnosed. This review covers the development of the diagnosis, evaluation and treatment approaches of vertigo of childhood, a valid support for physician that approach dizzy children (Ref. 25). Decision making for solitary vestibular schwannoma and contralateral Meniere's disease.

2007

The existence of dual inner ear pathology such as unilateral Meniere’s disease (MD) with a contralateral vestibular schwannoma (VS) is very rare, but provides the otologist with a significant management dilemma. In this study, we present 5 cases of unilateral disabling MD with a contralateral VS in the better hearing ear. Conservative management of the VS is mandated unless there are impending complications, with management directed toward controlling the vertigo attributed to MD. If and when the VS requires intervention, or the hearing in that ear deteriorates to unserviceable levels, cochlear implant of the ear affected by MD prior to addressing the VS provides optimal management.

Psychiatrische und neuropsychologische Auffälligkeiten bei Patienten mit Morbus Fabry: Literaturübersicht

2005

Fabry Disease (FD) is an X-linked lysosomal storage disorder (prevalence about 1 : 100 000) caused by a genetic defect associated with a lack of alpha-galactosidase A (alpha-GAL) enzyme activity. As a consequence, neutral glycosphingolipides can not be cleaved and metabolized, and accumulate in lysosomes of several tissues, particularly in vascular endothelium and smooth muscle cells. The most prominent symptoms comprise pain attacks and acroparesthesia, angiokeratoma, corneal opacity, renal and cardiac dysfunction, hypo- and anhidrosis, gastrointestinal symptoms, and cerebrovascular dysfunction with vertigo, headache, and cerebral ischemia. Characteristic symptoms of FD can occur in male a…

Postural stability in subjects with whiplash injury symptoms: results of a pilot study

2014

Posturographic tests can be used to assess and confirm the body's imbalance in subjects with whiplash injury. Further studies with larger cohorts are necessary to confirm this pilot study. To verify through a posturographic exam the qualitative and quantitative alterations of postural stability in subjects with previous cervical trauma in comparison with healthy subjects.A total of 42 subjects were analysed for the study; 22 as the control group (NM) and 20 (WM) with a positive anamnesis of whiplash injury from 3 to 12 month from diagnosis through a force platform. Centre of pressure (CoP) movements of the two groups with their eyes open and closed were recorded.During the closed eye test, t…

Benign paroxysmal positioning vertigo: diagnosis and therapy using video-oculographic control.

2003

In this prospective study, 82 patients (40 males, 42 females, aged between 15 and 80 years) with benign paroxysmal positioning vertigo (BPPV) were treated with different positioning manoeuvres using video-oculographic control. The maximum age for females and males was 31 and 40 years respectively. After an interview about the special history related to vertigo imbalance symptoms and using video-oculographic control, we diagnosed 79 patients with BPPV of the posterior semicircular canal and 3 of the horizontal semicircular canal. The Dix-Hallpike and Cawthorne manoeuvres were used for the diagnosis of BPPV of the posterior semicircular canal and the McClure manoeuvre for the diagnosis of BPP…
