Toward an Integrated System for Surveillance and Behaviour Analysis of Groups and People
2013
Security and INTelligence SYStem is an Italian research project which aims to create an integrated system for the analysis of multi-modal data sources (text, images, video, audio), to assist operators in homeland security applications. Within this project the Scientific Research Unit of the University of Palermo is responsible of the image and video analysis activity. The SRU of Palermo developed a web service based architecture that provides image and video analysis capabilities to the integrated analysis system. The developed architecture uses both state of the art techniques, adapted to cope with the particular problem at hand, and new algorithms to provide the following services: image …
Technology for supporting web information search and learning in Sign Language
2009
Sign Languages (SL) are underrepresented in the digital world, which contributes to the digital divide for the Deaf Community. In this paper, our goal is twofold: (1) to review the implications of current SL generation technologies for two key user web tasks, information search and learning and (2) to propose a taxonomy of the technical and functional dimensions for categorizing those technologies. The review reveals that although contents can currently be portrayed in SL by means of videos of human signers or avatars, the debate about how bilingual (text and SL) versus SL-only websites affect signers' comprehension of hypertext content emerges as an unresolved issue in need of further empi…
Video feedback in higher education - a contribution to improving the quality of written feedback
2012
Author's version of an article in the journal: Nordic Journal of Digital Literacy. Also available from the publisher at: http://www.idunn.no/ts/dk/2012/02/video_feedback_in_higher_education_-_a_contribution_to_impr The purpose of this article is to promote the significance of feedback regarding students’ working with written texts in higher education and to point out how technology can develop the quality and form of teachers’ feedback. The results of studies and tests completed in eight separate subject areas demonstrate that video feedback simplifies and increases the efficiency of responding to students’ work, as it allows the opportunity to achieve increased levels of precision and qual…
Diversification of adult education with the help of video lectures
2010
For some years now, adult education and working while studying have had an important role in the modern society. Mature-age study brings with it some special features, such as time use limitations, which must be taken into account when creating educational programmes for the students concerned. Above all, flexibility must become a major feature of participation in education. In relation to the Master Studies in Mathematical Information Technology at Kokkola University Consortium, the aim for some years now has been to increase that flexibility by diversifying traditional lecture teaching with the help of real-time and on-demand video lectures. With the help of the results presented in this …
Using Factor Analysis Techniques to Find Out Objective Video Quality Metrics for Live Video Streaming over Cloud Mobile Media Services
2016
The increased adoption of smartphones, the access to mobile broadband networks and the availability of public Clouds allow new multimedia services, called Cloud Mobile Media Services. Under this new architecture the proliferation of live video streaming applications and the Quality of Experience (QoE) given by the final user are an issue, due to the higher and variable delay, as result of the virtualization methods used in the Clouds. Thus in this paradigm new challenges appear related to keep and estimate a good QoE in terms of a standarized subjective video quality called Mean Opinion Score (MOS). In this paper we analyze different approaches based on Factor Analysis techniques to estimat…
Teledu: Transmedia Learning Ecosystem for People at Risk of Exclusion
2021
The TELEDU tele-education ecosystem, integrated by software and hardware components, allows the use of Web resources through Interactive Digital TV (iDTV) without the need to be continuously connected. It works with any existing digital TV standard and is especially useful for users who do not have broadband, being a very effective solution in places where there is a digital divide. The user must have, at least, a cell phone with 3G connection and any of these three options: Digital Terrestrial TV (DTT), Satellite TV or Cable TV. The conception of TELEDU is based on the premise that the software will offer a friendly interaction. Based on this, an interoperable, open and scalable environmen…
Scalable Virtual Network Video-Optimizer for Adaptive Real-Time Video Transmission in 5G Networks
2020
The increasing popularity of video applications and ever-growing high-quality video transmissions (e.g., 4K resolutions), has encouraged other sectors to explore the growth of opportunities. In the case of health sector, mobile Health services are becoming increasingly relevant in real-time emergency video communication scenarios where a remote medical experts’ support is paramount to a successful and early disease diagnosis. To minimize the negative effects that could affect critical services in a heavily loaded network, it is essential for 5G video providers to deploy highly scalable and priorizable in-network video optimization schemes to meet the expectations of a large quantity of vide…
Adaptive independent vector analysis for multi-subject complex-valued fMRI data.
2017
Abstract Background Complex-valued fMRI data can provide additional insights beyond magnitude-only data. However, independent vector analysis (IVA), which has exhibited great potential for group analysis of magnitude-only fMRI data, has rarely been applied to complex-valued fMRI data. The main challenges in this application include the extremely noisy nature and large variability of the source component vector (SCV) distribution. New method To address these challenges, we propose an adaptive fixed-point IVA algorithm for analyzing multiple-subject complex-valued fMRI data. We exploited a multivariate generalized Gaussian distribution (MGGD)- based nonlinear function to match varying SCV dis…
Flat-top ultra-wideband photonic filters based on mutual coherence function synthesis
2008
A novel all-incoherent optical circuit that allows for band-pass microwave-photonic filter design is presented and verified through numerical simulation. In contrast to conventional spectrum-sliced optical architectures that operate on the basis of a finite number of discrete taps, our proposal is based on arbitrary shaping of the spectrum of the broadband optical source in a conventional frequency encoder. This fact dramatically increases the free spectral range of the filter with respect to the conventional discrete-time optical processing. The filter transfer function is given by the mutual coherence function of the filtered source which allows, through an inverse problem, sculpting the …
Onko kissantappo taidetta? : kamppailua taiteen määrittelyvallasta
2014
Tämän tutkimuksen kohteena on suomalainen taidekeskustelu 1990-luvun taitteesta 2000-luvulle. Tutkimuksen aineisto koostuu pääosin Teemu Mäen videoteoksista Sex and death (1989) sekä My way, a work in progress (1994) kirjoitetuista sanomalehtiteksteistä sekä näihin teoksiin liitty-vistä muista teksteistä ja materiaalista, kuten oikeudenkäyntiasiakirjoista, eduskuntakysymyksistä, radio-ohjelmista ja keskustelupalstaviesteistä.
