Background and Purpose The α1-adrenoceptor family plays a critical role in regulating ocular perfusion by mediating responses to catecholamines. The purpose of the present study was to determine the contribution of individual α1-adrenoceptor subtypes to adrenergic vasoconstriction of retinal arterioles using gene-targeted mice deficient in one of the three adrenoceptor subtypes (α1A-AR−/−, α1B-AR−/− and α1D-AR−/− respectively). Field-induced ordering phenomena and non-local elastic compliance in two-dimensional colloidal crystals

Ordering phenomena in colloidal dispersions exposed to external one-dimensional, periodic fields or under confinement are studied systematically by Monte Carlo computer simulations. Such systems are useful models for the study of monolayers on a substrate. We find that the interaction with a substrate potential completely changes the miscibility of a binary, hard disc mixture at low external field amplitudes. The underlying ordering mechanisms leading to this laser-induced de-mixing differ, depending on which components interact with the substrate potential. Ductal infiltrating carcinoma (d.i.c.) of human breast is a highly invasive neoplasm characterized by enhanced deposition of collagen. Paradoxically, enhanced collagen deposition is not correlated with inhibition of the migration of tumour cells into the host tissue. d.i.c. is characterized by the reappearance of ‘embryonic’ type I-trimer collagen and an increase in type V collagen content in the matrix. Surface investigation and aluminum oxide estimation on test filters for the ATHENA X-IFU and WFI detectors

The ATHENA mission provides the demanded capabilities to address the ESA science theme "Hot and Energetic Universe". Two complementary instruments are foreseen: the X-IFU (X-ray Integral Field Unit) and WFI (Wide Field Imager). Both the instruments require filters to avoid that the IR radiation heats the X-IFU cryogenic detector and to protect the WFI detector from UV photons. Previous experience on XMM filters recommends to employ bilayer membrane consisting of aluminum deposited on polyimide. Analysis of a multi-wavelength time-resolved observation of a coronal loop

Several items on the diagnostics and interpretation of coronal loop observations are under debate. In this work, we analyze a well-defined loop system detected in a time-resolved observation in several spectral bands. The dataset includes simultaneous images in the TRACE 171 A, 195 A and 284 A bands, and Yohkoh/SXT, and two rasters taken with SoHO/CDS in twelve relevant lines. The loop is initially best visible in the TRACE 195 A filter band, and later in the 171 A filter band, with correspondence with the CDS raster images at log T \~ 6.0-6.1. Solc filters in a reflective geometry

We present the realization of a bulk optics birefringent Solc filter in a reflective geometry. This geometry reduces by half the number of required retarders, ensures the same spectral retardance function in pairs of retarders, and helps to make more compact filters. The key element is a quarter-wave Fresnel rhomb located in between the set of retarders and a mirror. Two cases are considered: the first Solc filter uses multiple-order quartz retarders, and the second one uses two liquid-crystal retarders. The latter has the advantage of being tunable via an applied voltage. Experimental results show how to filter the spectral content of a supercontinuum laser.

Strain pattern in supercooled liquids

Investigations of strain correlations at the glass transition reveal unexpected phenomena. The shear strain fluctuations show an Eshelby-strain pattern ($\,\sim \cos{(4\theta)}/r^2\,$), characteristic for elastic response, even in liquids at long times [1]. We address this using a mode-coupling theory for the strain fluctuations in supercooled liquids and data from both, video microscopy of a two-dimensional colloidal glass former and simulations of Brownian hard disks. We show that long-ranged and long-lived strain-signatures follow a scaling law valid close to the glass transition. Bound-state dark matter and Dirac neutrino mass

We propose a simple theory for the idea that cosmological dark matter (DM) may be present today mainly in the form of stable neutral hadronic thermal relics. In our model neutrino masses arise radiatively from the exchange of colored DM constituents, giving a common origin for both dark matter and neutrino mass. The exact conservation of $B-L$ symmetry ensures dark matter stability and the Dirac nature of neutrinos. The theory can be falsified by dark matter nuclear recoil direct detection experiments, leading also to possible signals at a next generation hadron collider.

Preliminary Mechanical Characterization of Thermal Filters for the X-IFU Instrument on Athena

The X-ray Integral Field Unit (X-IFU) is one of the two instruments of the Athena astrophysics space mission approved by ESA in the Cosmic Vision Science Program. The X-IFU consists of a large array of TES microcalorimeters that will operate at ~ 50 mK inside a sophisticated cryostat. A set of thin filters, highly transparent to X-rays, will be mounted on the cryostat thermal shields in order to attenuate the IR radiative load, to attenuate RF electromagnetic interferences, and to protect the detector from contamination.
