Communicative memory of irregular migration: The re-circulation of news images on YouTube
2016
This article analyses user-generated YouTube cut and mix videos of irregular migration as producing communicative memory of those who have suffered at Europe’s external borders. Visual and textual analyses examine a neglected perspective on the study of media representations of migration by examining a particular practice through which people engage with news images and participate in (re)construction of collective memory in relation to irregular migration. The analysis shows that while hegemonic Eurocentric imagery prevails also in the vernacular amateur productions, re-mixing different cultural productions nevertheless complicates the representation of irregular migration and affords alte…
Breaking the “Fourth Wall” in Qualitative Research: Participant-Led Digital Data Construction
2018
This article reconstructs the typical researcher-participant focus - where the participants are doing for us - instead we followed the participants’ lead in the construction of research. Using a qualitative literacy event case study as an example, we describe how participants unexpectedly co-constructed knowledge through a participant-led digital data collection. In this theoretical article, we provide an explanation of the original study, which used observations, semi-structured interviews, and home visits as a collective qualitative case study on parental participation in social literacy practices. The original investigation led to the important shift that occurred in participant-research…
The meanings of differentiated instruction in the narratives of Eritrean teachers
2021
The principles of inclusive education largely accepted by governments of different countries require differentiated classroom instruction to meet the diverse needs of individual students. Despite this, teachers have differing experiences and understandings about implementing differentiated instruction (DI) and heterogeneous classrooms. This narrative study aimed at exploring the meanings of DI in the Eritrean context, where teachers are not explicitly familiar with the concept, although their teaching practices reflect some level of differentiation. The research data consisted of 17 narrative interviews with Eritrean mathematics and science teachers. The results of the narrative analysis sh…
Reimagining cultural memory of the arctic in the graphic narratives of Oqaluttuaq
2021
The Greenlandic oral story-telling tradition, Oqaluttuaq, meaning “history,” “legend,” and “narrative,” is recognized as an important entry point into Arctic collective memory. The graphic artist Nuka K. Godtfredsen and his literary and scientific collaborators have used the term as the title of graphic narratives published from 2009 to 2018, and focused on four moments or ‘snippets’ from Greenland’s history (from the periods of Saqqaq, late Dorset, Norse settlement, and European colonization). Adopting a fragmentary and episodic approach to historical narrativization, the texts frame the modern European presence in Greenland as one of multiple migrations to and settlements in the Artic, ra…
Depression : The differing Narratives of Couples in Couple Therapy
2014
Introduction When a person becomes depressed, partnership can either be a source of strength, advancing recovery, or a source of further suffering, harming the health of both partners (Cordova & Gee, 2001). Also, depression in one spouse can create feelings of helplessness and hopelessness in both spouses (Cordova & Gee). These are some of the reasons why couple therapy has been used with persons diagnosed with depression and their spouses. Yet, according to Denton and Burwell's (2006) experience, which is similar to our own, the spouses of depressed patients often are not part of the treatment in psychiatric outpatient care, and hence feel unsupported, uninformed, isolated, confused, and f…
A Modular Formal Total Synthesis of (±)-Cycloclavine
2016
Cycloclavine is a clavine-type Ergot alkaloid noteworthy for its unique pentacyclic skeleton featuring a 3-azabicyclo[3.1.0]hexane substructure. A short convergent route to the racemic alkaloid is described which comprises only eight linear steps and requires only four chromatographic purifications. The two key building blocks can be prepared in high yield from commercially available starting materials. Two consecutive coupling reactions, namely a selective alkylation of a dienolate and a Heck reaction, are the key steps of the reaction sequence.
The International Comparable Corpus: Challenges in building multilingual spoken and written comparable corpora
2021
This paper reports on the efforts of twelve national teams in building the International Comparable Corpus (ICC; https://korpus.cz/icc) that will contain highly comparable datasets of spoken, written and electronic registers. The languages currently covered are Czech, Finnish, French, German, Irish, Italian, Norwegian, Polish, Slovak, Swedish and, more recently, Chinese, as well as English, which is considered to be the pivot language. The goal of the project is to provide much-needed data for contrastive corpus-based linguistics. The ICC corpus is committed to the idea of re-using existing multilingual resources as much as possible and the design is modelled, with various adjustments, on t…
Inhibition of DNA synthesis in chick embryo retinas, in vitro, by a factor from fetal bovine serum
1989
Fetal bovine serum inhibited deoxyribonucleic acid (DNA) synthesis in chick embryo retina explants. The inhibitory activity was precipitated from fetal bovine serum by 45% saturated ammonium sulfate and isolated by means of Sephadex G-100 and Bio-Gel P-60 columns as a peak with an apparent molecular weight of 7000 Da. DNA-inhibiting activity was heat- and acid-stable and was destroyed by dithiothreitol and alkaline treatment. The purified factor inhibited similarly both DNA synthesis and thymidine kinase activity; 50% inhibitory effect was found with 160 ng, 17 h after the addition into the incubation medium.
Methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus pseudintermedius as causative agent of dairy cow mastitis.
2013
Staphylococcus pseudintermedius is a coagulase-positive specie similar to Staphylococcus intermedius , frequently associated with pyoderma, otitis and urinary tract infections of dogs and cats (van Duijkeren and others 2011). No information about bovine mastitis caused by S pseudintermedius is available in the literature. Antimicrobial resistance among S pseudintermedius strains is increasing: in the past, susceptibility to most antibiotics was common (Bond and Loeffler 2012), but in the last few years methicillin-resistant S pseudintermedius (MRSP) strains have emerged as a significant animal health problem in veterinary medicine (Schwarz and others 2008, van Duijkeren and others 2008, Wee…
