Increased interleukin-6 and C-reactive protein levels after instrumented lumbar spine fusion in older patients
2019
Purpose: Interleukin 6 (IL-6) and the acute phase C-reactive protein (CRP) blood concentrations after lumbar spine fusion may be affected by age. The purpose of this prospective observational study was to assess postoperative serum levels of pro-inflammatory IL-6 and CRP after instrumented lumbar spine fusion surgery. We hypothesized that older patients would have increased levels of IL-6 and CRP after surgery. Methods: IL-6 and high-sensitive CRP biochemical marker levels were measured before instrumented spinal fusion, and postoperatively at 1 and 3 days, 6 weeks, and 3 months. The 49 patients in this sample were divided into two groups: age ≤ 60 years (n = 23) and age > 60 years (n = 26)…
Contact sensitizers modulate mechanisms of receptor-mediated endocytosis but not fluid-phase endocytosis in murine epidermal Langerhans cells.
1995
In order to define the influence of contact allergens on the fluid-phase endocytosis (FPE) of soluble molecules of murine epidermal Langerhans cells (LC), we studied the internalization of FITC-labeled bovine serum albumin (FITC-BSA), TRITC-labeled dextrane (TRITC-DEX) as well as horseradish peroxidase by LC. A 3-parameter flow-cytometric technique was performed for quantification of internalized FITC-BSA in LC using quantum red-labeled reagents for detection of la-antigen expression by LC and propidium iodide for exclusion of dead cells from analysis. A temperature-dependent rapid accumulation of FITC-BSA was noticed in time-course studies reaching a plateau between 1 and 2 h of in vitro c…
Effects of alkylxanthines on contractility of diaphragm fibres isolated from normal and sensitized guinea-pigs.
1993
Abstract This study investigates the effects of alkylxanthines on twitch tension generated by electrical stimulation (supramaximal pulses, 0·2 ms duration, 1 Hz) of diaphragm muscle fibres isolated from normal and actively-sensitized guinea-pigs. Caffeine, theophylline and theobromine increased, in a concentration-dependent manner (50–500 μm), twitch tension in normal and sensitized diaphragm. Caffeine (500 μm) enhanced contractility to a greater extent than theophylline or theobromine. Twitch potentiation by caffeine (500 μm) was significantly greater in sensitized diaphragm. Verapamil (0·1–100 μm) did not alter twitch contractions in the absence or presence of alkylxanthines in normal or …

Lethal Anaphylactic Reaction to Intravenous Gelatin in the Course of Surgery
2016
Plasma volume expanders (PVEs) are widely used to increase circulating blood volume. Gelatins used as PVEs are heterogeneous mixtures of polypeptides, usually prepared by hydrolysis of bovine collagen containing large amounts of proline and hydroxyproline residues. It has been shown that gelatins can cause anaphylactic reactions. We describe the case of a 73-year-old man who during surgery for intestinal obstruction presented a lethal anaphylactic reaction after the administration of a PVE containing gelatin lysate. The reaction occurred 10 minutes after the start of plasma expander infusion. Then, patient became comatose, and he died without awakening after 76 days. Necroptic aspects and h…
Effects of chlorpromazine and some of its metabolites on the EEG and on dopamine metabolism of the isolated perfused rat brain.
1979
Abstract The study concerned the effects of chlorpromazine (CPZ), monodesmethyl-chlorpromazine (NOR1-CPZ), didesmethyl-chlorpromazine (NOR2-CPZ), and chlorpromazine-N-oxide (CPZ-NO) on the EGG and on dopamine metabolism of the isolated perfused rat brain. Isolated brains were perfused with 100 ml of a perfusion medium containing 30% bovine red cells (v/v), 2 g bovine serum albumin, 14 mM glucose as well as one of the agents in a concentration of 10 μM. The main dopamine metabolite homovanillic acid (HVA) was measured fluorimetrically in the striatum of the isolated brain. The EGG was recorded by two symmetrical bipolar leads from the parietal regions at various times during the 30 min perfu…
Non-specific Hyperreactivity to Pharmacological Stimuli in Tracheal and Lung Parenchymal Strips of Actively Sensitized Guinea-pigs
1989
Abstract The responsiveness of tracheal and lung parenchymal strips isolated from actively sensitized guinea-pigs to CaCl2 (in K+-depolarized tissue), KCl, acetylcholine and histamine was compared with that of strips from unsensitized animals. The concentration-response curves to the mentioned agonists exhibited, in the sensitized group, a left upward displacement (greater maximal effect, lesser effective concentration 50% and a steeper slope) compared with those obtained in the unsensitized group. These results indicate the existence of a non-specific increase in responsiveness in the airway smooth muscle from sensitized animals.
Chromosomal polymorphism and patterns of viability in natural populations of Drosophila melanogaster from cellar and vineyard.
1991
Two neighbouring natural populations of Drosophila melanogaster have been analysed, one from a cellar habitat and the other from a vineyard outside. An extensive study of inversion polymorphism in the two populations has been carried out. Furthermore, the relationship between inversion polymorphism and the viability of the second chromosome has been studied. The data regarding the total frequency of inversion-carrying chromosomes indicate a lower frequency in the cellar population than in the vineyard population. Some possibilities that could explain the behaviour of the chromosomes from the cellar in relation to the peculiar environment of this habitat are discussed. New endemic inversions…
Diagnosing Helicobacter pylori in vivo by confocal laser endoscopy.
2005
Background & Aims: Confocal laser endomicroscopy enables subsurface microscopic imaging of living tissue during ongoing endoscopy. This case report describes the in vivo detection of Helicobacter pylori by endomicroscopy. Methods: Endomicroscopy (Pentax, Tokyo, EC-3870CIFK) was performed by using two different contrast stains: Topical Acriflavine in addition to intravenously applied fluorescein netted the surface and allowed identification of focal accumulation of Helicobacter pylori at the surface and in deeper layer of the gastric epithelium. Biopsies were performed at the antrum and corpus for urease testing and histology. In addition, biopsies were cultured for Helicobacter pylori. Cultu…
Growth and safety evaluation of infant formulae containing oligosaccharides derived from bovine milk: a randomized, double-blind, noninferiority trial
2014
A limited number of nondigestible oligosaccharides are available for use in infant formula. This study evaluated growth and safety in infants fed formula supplemented with a mixture of bovine milk-derived oligosaccharides (BMOS). This mixture, which was generated from whey permeate, contains galactooligosaccharides and other oligosaccharides from bovine milk, such as 3′- and 6′-sialyllactose. We hypothesized that growth in infants fed BMOS-supplemented formula would be noninferior to that in infants fed standard formula. Healthy term infants ≤14 days old were randomly assigned to standard formula (control; n = 84); standard formula with BMOS (IF-BMOS; n = 99); or standard formula with BMOS …
