Learning about Students’ Receiving Special Educational Support Experiences of Qualification, Socialization and Subjectification in Finnish Vocational…
2022
This paper airs the experiences of eighteen students with special educational needs completing their studies at a Finnish vocational institution, which has a mandate to provide intensive special support for the students. It contributes to the national and international discussion of education’s purposes and elaborates on students’ descriptions. The study frames a research question: To what extent are Biesta’s domains of good education—qualification, socialization, and subjectification—audible in the narratives of Finland’s VET special educational needs students? The paper adopts a narrative approach and uses narrative positioning analysis as a methodical …
Robustness of the Gaussian concentration inequality and the Brunn–Minkowski inequality
2016
We provide a sharp quantitative version of the Gaussian concentration inequality: for every $r>0$, the difference between the measure of the $r$-enlargement of a given set and the $r$-enlargement of a half-space controls the square of the measure of the symmetric difference between the set and a suitable half-space. We also prove a similar estimate in the Euclidean setting for the enlargement with a general convex set. This is equivalent to the stability of the Brunn-Minkowski inequality for the Minkowski sum between a convex set and a generic one.
AN INNOVATIVE SYSTEM FOR VINEYARD MANAGEMENT IN SICILY
2010
The aim of this study was to monitor the micro-climate of the grapevine in order to detect the adversities of the spring period (especially April and May), while reducing the operating costs of the vineyard, and increasing the overall quality of grapes. For this purpose a Wireless Sensor Network (WSN) was used. Furthermore, a comparison was performed between data measured by the wireless sensors and data provided by the fixed meteorological station of the Regione Siciliana (SIAS).
The effects of a medical hypnotherapy on clothing industry employees suffering from chronic pain.
2013
Abstract Background Problems associated with pain in several body regions due to work-related musculoskeletal disorders (WRMDs), repetitive movement and negative stress at work are quite common in many manufacturing industries of Latvia, int.al. clothing industry. The aim of this study was to evaluate efficiency of the psychotherapeutic intervention using medical hypnotherapy (MH) program for mind-body relaxation with pain-blocking imagery, cognitive restructuring of unpleasant physical and emotional experience. Methods 300 sewers and 50 cutters with chronic pain were involved in the study. Self-rated WRMDs symptoms, pain intensity and interference were assessed using the extended version o…
Uptake of silica covered Quantum Dots into living cells: Long term vitality and morphology study on hyaluronic acid biomaterials
2015
Quantum Dots (QDs) are promising very bright and stable fluorescent probes for optical studies in the biological field but water solubility and possible metal bio-contamination need to be addressed. In this work, a simple silica-QD hybrid system is prepared and the uptake in bovine chondrocytes living cells without any functionalization of the external protective silica shield is demonstrated. Moreover, long term treated cells vitality (up to 14 days) and the transfer of silica-QDs to the next cell generations are here reported. Confocal fluorescence microscopy was also used to determine the morphology of the so labelled cells and the relative silica-QDs distribution. Finally, we employ sil…
Energy and temperature of superfluid turbulent vortex tangles
2007
We consider three aspects of turbulent vortex tangles in superfluids. First, we outline some contributions to the Vinen’s equation for the time evolution of the vortex line density, related to the presence of pinned vortices incorporating the effects of the walls. Afterwards, we analyze some aspects of the energy balance of the vortex tangle, related to frictional dissipation and to vortex formation and destruction. Finally, we explore the concept of an effective temperature for the vortex tangle, related to the average energy of the vortex loops and to the diffusion coefficient of vortex lines. The combination of these ideas suggests some formal similarities with other kinds of driven none…
Rapid shifting of a deep magmatic source at Fagradalsfjall volcano, Iceland
2022
AbstractRecent Icelandic rifting events have illuminated the roles of centralized crustal magma reservoirs and lateral magma transport1–4, important characteristics of mid-ocean ridge magmatism1,5. A consequence of such shallow crustal processing of magmas4,5 is the overprinting of signatures that trace the origin, evolution and transport of melts in the uppermost mantle and lowermost crust6,7. Here we present unique insights into processes occurring in this zone from integrated petrologic and geochemical studies of the 2021 Fagradalsfjall eruption on the Reykjanes Peninsula in Iceland. Geochemical analyses of basalts erupted during the first 50 days of the eruption, combined with associate…
Petrogenesis of orogenic lamproites of the Bohemian Massif: Sr–Nd–Pb–Li isotope constraints for Variscan enrichment of ultra-depleted mantle domains
2016
Abstract During convergence of Gondwana-derived microplates and Laurussia in the Palaeozoic, subduction of oceanic and continental crusts and their sedimentary cover introduced material of regionally contrasting chemical and isotopic compositions into the mantle. This slab material metasomatised the local mantle, producing a highly heterogeneous lithospheric mantle beneath the European Variscides. The eastern termination of the European Variscides (Moldanubian and Saxo-Thuringian zones of Austria, Czech Republic, Germany and Poland) is unusual in that the mantle was modified by material from several subduction zones within a small area. Orogenic lamproites sampled this lithospheric mantle, …
Cosmic-ray exposure ages of pallasites
2015
We analyzed cosmogenic nuclides in metal and/or silicate (primarily olivine) separated from the main-group pallasites Admire, Ahumada, Albin, Brahin, Brenham, Esquel, Finmarken, Glorieta Mountain, Huckitta, Imilac, Krasnojarsk, Marjalahti, Molong, Seymchan, South Bend, Springwater, and Thiel Mountains and from Eagle Station. The metal separates contained an olivine fraction which although small, <1 wt% in most cases, nonetheless contributes significantly to the budgets of some nuclides (e.g., up to 35% for Ne-21 and Al-26). A correction for olivine is therefore essential and was made using model calculations and/or empirical relations for the production rates of cosmogenic nuclides in iron …
New sulfonamide complexes with essential metal ions [Cu (II), Co (II), Ni (II) and Zn (II)]. Effect of the geometry and the metal ion on DNA binding …
2019
Abstract Mixed divalent Cu, Co, Ni and Zn complexes containing the new sulfonamide ligand N–(2–(pyridin–2–yl)ethyl)quinoline–8–sulfonamide (HQSEP) were prepared and characterized by physico-chemical techniques. The tetracoordinate [Cu(QSEP)X] [X = Br (1), Cl (2)] compounds present a seesaw geometry (τ4 = 0.56 (1) and 0.50 (2)). The Cu(II) in the [Cu(QSEP)(NO3)(MeOH)] (3) complex is five coordinate with a slightly distorted SP geometry (τ = 0.11). The [M(QSEP)(benz)] [M = Cu(II) (4), Ni(II) (5), Co(II) (6) and Zn(II) (7); benz = benzoate] compounds are configurationally isotypic. The coordination geometries of the M(II) ions can be best described as distorted SP (τ = 0.29, 0.15, 0.34 and 0.1…
