Recognition of Viologen Derivatives in Water by N-Alkyl Ammonium Resorcinarene Chlorides

2017

Three water-soluble N-alkyl ammonium resorcinarene chlorides decorated with terminal hydroxyl groups at the lower rims were synthesized and characterized. The receptors were decorated at the upper rim with either terminal hydroxyl, rigid cyclohexyl, or flexible benzyl groups. The binding affinities of these receptors toward three viologen derivatives, two of which possess an acetylmethyl group attached to one of the pyridine nitrogens, in water were investigated via 1H NMR spectroscopy, fluorescence spectroscopy, and isothermal titration calorimetry (ITC). ITC quantification of the binding process gave association constants of up to 103 M–1. Analyses reveal a spontaneous binding process whi…

Structure and properties of zwitterionic polysoaps: functionalization by redox-switchable moieties

2007

Redoxactive monomeric and polymeric surfactants containing viologen and N-alkylated nicotinic acid moieties were synthesized. These systems are potentially able to trigger reversible changes of self-organization by creation or removal of a charge via a redox reaction. Hence, they are investigated with respect to solubility, aggregation behavior, and their electrochemical properties in water. — All monomers, but only the viologen polymers are water-soluble and drastically decrease the surface tension of water. Critical micelle concentrations are observed for the monomers only. — The chemical reversibility of the redox reactions of the compounds in water was investigated using cyclic voltamme…

A Bichromophore Based on Perylene and Terrylene for Energy Transfer Studies at the Single-Molecule Level

1999

A functionalized dialkylperylene and a modified terrylenetetracarboxdiimide (TTCDI) were joined by a hexanediyl spacer. The resulting bichromophoric molecule 1 (R = 4-tert-butylphenoxy) is a suitable model system for donor–acceptor energy transfer studies at the single-molecule level.

Synthesis and Electronic Spectra of Substitutedp-Distyrylbenzenes for the Use in Light-Emitting Diodes

2000

The influence of substitution on the absorption and Luminescence spectra of oligo(phenylenevinylene)s has been studied using distyrylbenzene (DSB) as a model compound. The degree, character, and pattern of substitution was varied systematically, altering the electronic properties of the DSB, the wavelength of the emitted light could be tuned over a range of 100 nm. The syntheses of 6b—h were performed by twofold Wittig Horner-olefinations of bisphoshonates 1a, b with substituted benzaldehydes 2a—i, 6ivia Heck-reaction of the dibromosulfonylbenzene 3, 6k by Siegrist-reaction of 4 with N-phenylbenzaldimine and the Knoevenagel-reaction of benzyl cyanide with 5 led to 6l.

[39] DNA damage induced by ultraviolet and visible light and its wavelength dependence

2000

Publisher Summary DNA damage induced by solar radiation in mammalian cells consists largely of two types of modification: pyrimidine dimers and oxidative modifications. Pyrimidine dimmers that can be subdivided into cyclobutane pyrimidine dimmers, (CPDs) and (6-4) photoproducts are the characteristic and most abundant modifications after direct excitation of DNA, although they can also be formed indirectly by energy transfer from other excited molecules such as carbonyl compounds. Oxidative DNA damage, which includes various pyrimidine and purine modifications, sites of base loss (AP sites), and strand breaks, is generated in only low yield after direct excitation of DNA (except at very sho…

Four new eremophilendiolides from Ligularia atroviolacea

2007

From Ligularia atroviolacea, four new eremophilendiolides, 8 beta-hydroxy-eremophil-3,7 (11)-dien-12,8 alpha(14,6 alpha)-diolide (1), 8 beta-methoxy-eremophil-3,7(11)-dien-12,8 alpha(14,6 alpha)-diolide (2), 8 alpha-hydroxy-eremophil-3,7(11)-dien-12,8 beta(14,6 alpha)-diolide (3) and eremophil-3,7(11),8-trien-12,8 (14,6 alpha)-diolide (4), as well as a known diolide (5) were isolated. Their structures were elucidated on the basis of 1D and 2D NMR as well as ESI-MS spectral data. (c) 2006 Yu Zhao. Published by Elsevier B.V. on behalf of Chinese Chemical Society. Child Abuse, Neglect, and Violent Criminal Behavior in a Midwest Metropolitan Area of the United States, 1967-1988

1991

These data examine the relationships between childhood abuse and/or neglect and later criminal and violent criminal behavior. In particular, the data focus on whether being a victim of violence and/or neglect in early childhood leads to being a criminal offender in adolescence or early adulthood and whether a relationship exists between childhood abuse or neglect and arrests as a juvenile, arrests as an adult, and arrests for violent offenses. For this data collection, adult and juvenile criminal histories of sampled cases with backgrounds of abuse or neglect were compared to those of a matched control group with no official record of abuse or neglect. Variables contained in Part 1 include …

Charge-dependent flow and the search for the chiral magnetic wave in Pb-Pb collisions at √sNN = 2.76 TeV

2016

We report on measurements of a charge-dependent flow using a novel three-particle correlator with ALICE in Pb-Pb collisions at the CERN Large Hadron Collider (LHC), and discuss the implications for observation of local parity violation and the chiral magnetic wave (CMW) in heavy-ion collisions. Charge-dependent flow is reported for different collision centralities as a function of the event charge asymmetry. While our results are in qualitative agreement with expectations based on the CMW, the nonzero signal observed in higher harmonics correlations indicates a possible significant background contribution. We also present results on a differential correlator, where the flow of positive and …
