eCity: Virtual City Environment for Engineering Problem Based Learning

2015

The main objective of the eCITY project is to design, develop and validate a pedagogical methodology, supported by an online, collaborative, city-development simulation engine (Simcity like) that stimulates the integration and continuous exploitation of Problem-Based Learning (PBL) in engineering and science schools but, at the same time, fostering the interest for these orientations in secondary school students. This article analyses the design, implementation, and evaluation of a nation-wide project to create a common digital solution for university teaching staff’s pedagogical training in Finland. During three years, eight universities collaborated in developing an online learning platform called UNIPS, the University Pedagogical Support system. The areas to develop were A) a learning platform based on technical design principles, B) pedagogical principles, and C) broadening the scope of offered studies. The results have been promising. With a carefully planned timetable, all participating universities were able to produce, test, and offer UNIPS modules in collaboration with other universities …

How is Building Information Modeling Influenced by Project Complexity?

2014

Virtual design and construction of buildings and architectural spaces require extensive collaboration among a diverse set of design professionals. The authors analyze e-collaboration performance in two construction projects of differing complexity, to gain an understanding of how collaborative design based on building information modeling (BIM) is influenced by the complexity of the building project. The findings suggest that the perceived business value of BIM depends on project complexity and that BIM-based collaboration does not yield unconditional positive implications for all types of construction projects. The authors argue that current practice would benefit from a more structured ap…

Engaging learners through virtual worlds

2010

Abstract The aim of this paper is to explore how virtual worlds could support the engagement for learning. This paper reviews the results of studies that utilized virtual worlds to engage learners. The results are examined in two levels, namely learning gains and design principles. It has been found out that deeper learner engagement results in higher learning gains. In some studies better content retention is also noted. Many studies also suggest design principles for using virtual worlds for facilitating engaged learning. This paper builds a framework for the design and use of virtual worlds in education for better learner engagement.

Remote programming of network robots within the UJI Industrial Robotics Telelaboratory: FPGA vision and SNRP network protocol

2009

This paper presents the UJI Industrial Robotics Telelaboratory, which lets Ph.D. and Master’s degree students perform robotics and computer vision tele-experiments. By using this system, students are able to program experiments remotely via the Web, in order to combine the use of a field-programmable gate array (FPGA) to provide real-time vision processing, a conveyor belt, and a Motoman industrial manipulator. This paper introduces the novel SNRP protocol (i.e., Simple Network Robot Protocol), which permits the integration of network robots and sensors within an e-learning platform in a simple and reliable manner. As long as the students are able to interact remotely with a real robotic sc…

Biomechanical analysis of the humeral tray positioning in reverse shoulder arthroplasty design

2017

Despite the widespread use of reverse total shoulder arthroplasty, the fundamental effects of implant configuration on certain biomechanical outcomes have not been completely elucidated especially for the most innovative prostheses. Aim of this work is to investigate the behaviour of a new reverse shoulder prosthesis, characterized by a humeral tray with a variable offset, designed to increase the range of motion and to reduce the impingement. The purposes of this study were to evaluate the effect of reverse shoulder implant design parameters on the deltoid muscle forces, required to produce abduction, and on the shoulder range of motion, in order to provide a more systematic understanding …

Conclusions from the Evaluation of Virtual Machine Based High Resolution Display Wall System

2016

There are several approaches to the construction of large scale high resolution display walls depending on the required use case. Some require support of 3D acceleration APIs like OpenGL, some require stereoscopic projection. Others simply require a surface with a very high display resolution. The authors of this paper have developed a virtual machine based high resolution display wall architecture that works for all planar projection use cases and does not require a custom integration. The software that generates the presented content is executed in a virtual machine thus no specific APIs other than those of the virtualized OS are required. Any software that is able to run under a given OS…

Immunity of a Virtual Instrument to conducted electromagnetic disturbances

2004

In the paper the performances of the Virtual Instruments under conducted electromagnetic disturbances are investigated, in order to find out if and how their metrological characteristics change with respect to the ones measured in absence of electromagnetic threats. The analysis is carried out by means of experimental tests, subjecting the AC power port of the systems under test to the conducted disturbances considered by the IEC-61326 standard and following the test procedures prescribed in the IEC-61000-4-series standards. The results show that the tested measurements instruments are sufficiently immune to these disturbances, since no variations of the distinctive parameters have been obs…

Visual scale factor for speed perception

2011

Speed perception is an important task depending mainly on optic flow that the driver must perform continuously to control his/her vehicle. Unfortunately, it appears that in some driving simulators speed perception is under estimated, leading into speed production higher than in real conditions. Perceptual validity is then not good enough to study driver’s behavior. To solve this problem, a technique has recently seen the light, which consists of modifying the geometric field of view (GFOV) while keeping the real field of view (FOV) constant. We define our visual scale factor as the ratio between the GFOV and the FOV. The present study has been carried out on the SAAM dynamic driving simulat…

A virtual instrument for the measurement of IEEE Std 1459-2000 power quantities

2006

In this paper, the authors present a PC-based instrument for the measurement of electrical-power quantities defined in IEEE Std. 1459. The instrument is based on a time-domain technique for the detection of the fundamental and harmonic components of voltages and currents. The time-domain strategy was originally developed by the authors for three-phase, three-wire systems. In that paper, the strategy had been extended to both three-phase, four-wire and single-phase systems. Simulation tests were carried out to assess the uncertainty contribution of the proposed strategy in the absence of the measurement transducers. Moreover, the accuracy of the PC-based instrument with its transducers was e…
