Significance of passively induced stretch reflexes on achilles tendon force enhancement

An in vivo buckle transducer technique was applied to study the reflex contribution to ATF enhancement during passive dorsiflexion stretches. Single stretches led to a linear ATF increase in the absence of an EMG reflex response, whereas clear ATF enhancement over the passive component occurred 13-15 ms after the onset of EMG responses. To quantify the reflexly induced increase in ATF, the stretched position was maintained. The mean reflex effect was two to four times greater than the passive stretch effect.

Rising levels of cytomegalovirus (CMV) DNAemia and/or pp65 antigenemia have been observed during pre-emptive ganciclovir therapy in patients undergoing allogeneic hematopoietic stem cell transplantation (allo-SCT). We assessed the incidence of this event in our series, and investigated whether its occurrence was associated with an impairment in the CMV-specific T-cell response. Persistent infection with human papillomaviruses (HPV) is a prerequisite for the development of cervical cancer. Vaccination with virus-like particles (VLP) has demonstrated efficacy in prophylaxis but lacks therapeutic potential. HPV16 L1E7 chimeric virus-like particles (CVLP) consist of a carboxy-terminally truncated HPV16L1 protein fused to the amino-terminal part of the HPV16 E7 protein and self-assemble by recombinant expression of the fusion protein. The CVLP are able to induce L1- and E7-specific cytotoxic T lymphocytes. Sera collected in the course of a prospective study carried out in Prague in 1975–1983 were assayed for the presence of human papillomavirus (HPV) antibodies. Women with cervical neoplasia proven by biopsy at enrollment possessed antibodies to peptides derived from E2, E4 and E7 proteins of HPV16 and to virus-like particles (VLPs) of HPV16, -18 and -33 significantly more frequently than matched controls. Women without cervical neoplasia at enrollment who developed the disease in the course of the study differed from matched controls by a higher prevalence of antibodies against VLPs of HPV16 and -18 but not against early antigens of HPV16. Hepatitis B virus deoxyribonucleic acid (HBV-DNA) was studied by Southern blot analysis in liver biopsy specimens from 75 HBsAg-positive patients with chronic liver disease living in southern Italy. Twenty-seven of the patients were hepatitis delta virus (HDV) superinfected. Intrahepatic HBV-DNA was detected in 54 (72%) patients, 32 (59%) of them with replicative forms. The presence of replicative forms was directly related to liver HBcAg and inversely related to liver HDAg, as shown by multivariate analysis. Chronic Intestinal Infection due to Subgenus F Type 40 Adenovirus in a Patient with AIDS

A case of chronic intestinal infection due to adenovirus type 40 lasting for 13 months in a patient with AIDS is described. Adenovirus particles were detected by electron microscopy in biopsy samples taken from the duodenum 3 months after the onset of diarrhoea. The virus was identified as adenovirus type 40 in stool samples by ELISA monoclonal antibodies to adenovirus group antigen (MAd-g2) and types 40 and 41 (MA 40-1 and MA 41-1). No other enteropathogens were found. These data support a causal relationship between adenovirus 40 and the gastrointestinal symptoms of the patient. This is the first reported case of intestinal infection caused by adenovirus type 40 in a patient with AIDS.
