Multiple periscope and chimney grafts to treat ruptured thoracoabdominal and pararenal aortic aneurysms
2011
Purpose: To report midterm outcomes after urgent endovascular repair of ruptured pararenal or thoracoabdominal aortic aneurysms using multiple periscope and chimney grafts to preserve renovisceral branch perfusion and facilitate aneurysm exclusion. Methods: Nine consecutive men (mean age 72614 years, range 40–88) presenting with ruptured thoracoabdominal (n56), pararenal (n52), or infrarenal (n51) aortic aneurysm underwent urgent endovascular repair with at least 1 periscope graft delivered via a transfemoral access; chimney grafts were installed from an axillary access. In all, 17 periscope and 7 chimney grafts were used to reperfuse 11 renal and 13 visceral arteries in the 9 patients. The…
Focused ultrasound to diagnose HIV-associated tuberculosis (FASH) in the extremely resource-limited setting of South Sudan: a cross-sectional study
2019
ObjectiveOur cross-sectional study aimed at evaluating the diagnostic performance of Focused Assessment with Sonography for HIV-associated tuberculosis (FASH) to detect extrapulmonary tuberculosis in extremely resource-limited settings, with visceral leishmaniasis as a differential diagnosis with overlapping sonographic feature.DesignCross-sectional study.SettingVoluntary Counselling and Testing Centre (VCT) of Yirol Hospital, South Sudan.ParticipantsFrom May to November 2017, 252 HIV-positive patients out of 624 newly admitted to VCT Centre were registered for antiretroviral treatment. According to the number of trained doctors available to practise ultrasound (US) scan, a sample of 100 pa…
Long-term consequences of polycystic ovary syndrome on cardiovascular risk
2009
Most available data suggest that the prevalence of cardiovascular diseases in women with polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS) is smaller than expected based on risk calculations during fertile years; therefore, more studies are needed on long-term cardiovascular consequences. Evidence is accumulating that postmenopausal women with PCOS have an increased risk of cerebrovascular events and cardiovascular morbidity. These events are partially related to persisting hyperandrogenism but are mostly correlated with excessive body weight (mainly visceral obesity); this suggests that our best long-term strategy is to ensure that women with PCOS are informed about their high risk for metabolic and cardio…
IL-15 in human visceral leishmaniasis caused byLeishmania infantum
2002
SummaryInterleukin (IL)-15 is a recently discovered cytokine with the ability to stimulate the proliferation activity of Th1 and/or Th2 lymphocytes. Here, we investigated the involvement of IL-15 in the immune response to Leishmania infantum infection by studying patients with visceral leishmaniasis (VL). We found that IL-15 is produced by leishmanial antigen (LAg)-stimulated peripheral blood mononuclear cells (PBMC) from active VL patients at a significantly higher level than those produced by cells from healed VL subjects or healthy controls. A significant increase in IL-15 serum blood levels was also observed in acute VL patients compared with healed ones. Furthermore, recombinant IL-15 …
Comparisonof the effects of six-week time-restricted eating on weight loss, body composition, and visceral fat in overweight older men and women
2023
The aim of this study was to determine the effectiveness of a six-week time-restricted eating (TRE) intervention in reducing body weight, fat loss, and visceral fat in overweight, older adult men and women (age range = 65-74 years). Another objective was to determine the feasibility of widespread use of TRE in older women and men. The study randomly assigned 116 healthy, non-smoking participants to one of two conditions: TRE or educational control participants. Participants in the TRE group were instructed to not consume calorie containing beverages or food for 16 h per day, from 8:00 pm to 12:00 pm. Participants in the control group were instructed to follow a meal plan based on their prev…
Sympathetic blocks for visceral cancer pain management: A systematic review and EAPC recommendations.
2015
The neurolytic blocks of sympathetic pathways, including celiac plexus block (CPB) and superior hypogastric plexus block (SHPB) , have been used for years. The aim of this review was to assess the evidence to support the performance of sympathetic blocks in cancer patients with abdominal visceral pain. Only comparison studies were included. All data from the eligible trials were analyzed using the GRADE system. Twenty-seven controlled studies were considered. CPB, regardless of the technique used, improved analgesia and/or decrease opioid consumption, and decreased opioid-induced adverse effects in comparison with a conventional analgesic treatment. In one study patients treated with superi…
Farmed Gilthead Sea Bream (Sparus aurata) by-Products Valorization: Viscera Oil ω-3 Enrichment by Short-Path Distillation and In Vitro Bioactivity Ev…
2021
This study shows a pilot scale protocol aimed to obtain an omega 3-enriched oil after the processing of farmed gilthead sea bream viscera (SBV)
Isomeric arrangement of the left atrial appendages and visceral heterotaxy: two atypical cases.
2000
AbstractWe present two cases in which there was isomeric arrangement oi the left atrial appendages in association with multiple spleens and complete heart block. In both of these, the venous connections were normal. In one case the arrangement of the bronchial tree and the lungs was normal, the liver was left-sided, and the stomach was right-sided. In the other case, there was left isomeric broncho-pulmonary morphology, and both liver and stomach were right-sided. These unusual combinations show the need for full description of the morphology of other organs, and the venoatrial connections, in cases with isomeric arrangement of the atrial appendages. They also demonstrate that connection of…
Levothyroxine and insulin requirement in autoimmune polyglandular type 3 syndrome: a real-life study
2020
Abstract Purpose To evaluate factors influencing the insulin and levothyroxine requirement in patients with autoimmune polyglandular syndrome type 3 (APS-3) vs. patients with type 1 diabetes mellitus (T1DM) and autoimmune hypothyroidism (AH) alone, respectively. Methods Fifty patients with APS-3, 60 patients with T1DM and 40 patients with AH were included. Anthropometric, clinical and biochemical parameters were evaluated in all patients. Insulin requirement was calculated in patients with APS-3 and T1DM, while levothyroxine requirement was calculated in APS-3 and AH. Results Patients with APS-3 showed higher age (p = 0.001), age of onset of diabetes (p = 0.006) and TSH (p = 0.004) and lowe…
Serological screening for Leishmania infantum in asymptomatic blood donors living in an endemic area (Sicily, Italy)
2005
The purpose of our study was to assess whether Leishmania infantum parasitemia occurs in asymptomatic Leishmania-seropositive subjects. Samples from 500 blood donors were tested using an enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA). Anti-Leishmania antibodies were not found in any sample. Our findings suggest that the risk of L. infantum transmission by blood transfusion in Sicily is very low.
