A methodology for fire data analysis based on pattern recognition towards the disaster management
2015
The aim of this paper is to investigate a proposed strategy for fire disaster analysis that is implemented based on pattern recognition technique in order to achieve a methodology for disaster management. Since the fire hazard has severe effects onto human and properties, it is essential to predict and possibly prevent it. Almost every fire produces some issues, such as heat, smoke, gas, and flame, which are sensible and measurable via devices or detection systems. The fire behavior is relevant to these issues. In this research, temperature, heat radiation, and visibility (smoke) data of fire that have been obtained from Fire Dynamics Simulator (FDS) are used for analysis. The location of t…
Avoiding minorities: Social invisibility
2012
Three experiments examined how self-consciousness has an impact on the visual exploration of a social field. The main hypothesis was that merely a photograph of people can trigger a dynamic process of social visual interaction such that minority images are avoided when people are in a state of self-reflective consciousness. In all three experiments, pairs of pictures—one with characters of social minorities and one with characters of social majorities—were shown to the participants. By means of eye-tracking technology, the results of Experiment 1 (n=20) confirmed the hypothesis that in the reflective consciousness condition, people look more at the majority than minority characters. The res…
Social network brand visibility (SNBV) : Conceptualization and empirical evidence
2018
Social media has become a new way of life that allows for real-time interaction among businesses (B2B) and consumers (P2P/C2C) as well as between business firms and consumers (B2C). Customers are increasingly accessing and using social networking sites (SNS), making it imperative for businesses and organizations to have a presence on these platforms to enhance visibility. The main purpose of this chapter is to provoke an agenda on the study of social network brand visibility (SNBV). We developed and proposed a definition of SNBV and report findings from a preliminary study. We further discuss implications for theory, research, and practice as well as the limitations and options for future r…
Soil Erosion as an Environmental Concern ... for Everyone?
2020
Nowadays, the scientific community is aware of the negative environmental impacts of soil erosion on ecosystem services. Soil erosion is one of the most important causes of land degradation because of its immediate influence of the most fertile topsoil parts. It is well-known that questions related to who, what, why, where and when soil erosion causes negative impacts must be considered by stakeholders and policymakers. However, why do the Sustainable Development Goals tell anything about soil erosion? In this keynote, we will try to show the importance to develop tools which can be used to assess soil erosion to obtain convincing results for stakeholders and policymakers. According to this…
Flora Ossette’s ‘feminist visibility’ in her translation of Olive Schreiner’s Woman and Labour
2011
The visibility of the translator has become a pervasive topic of discussion in translation studies ever since it was explicitly approached by Lawrence Venuti in his well known 1995 The Translator’s Invisibility. In Flora Ossette’s translation into Spanish of Woman and Labour by Olive Schreiner we cannot only appreciate the voice of the “implicit translator” (Hermans 1996) but also the “explicit” voice. Indeed, the translator actively participates in the text by adding, omitting, reorganizing or emphasizing Schreiner’s ideas. Moreover, led on by the feminist ideals shared by both writer and translator, no less than by her fervent admiration for the South African authoress, she actually becom…
Tulka un tulkotāja profesiju atspoguļojums Latvijas plašsaziņas līdzekļos 2014.gadā
2015
3D part inspection path planning of a laser scanner with control on the uncertainty
2011
International audience; This article concerns the measurement process of mechanical parts using laser scanners. From the point of view of industrial applications, the objective is to guarantee the measurement accuracy during the scanning with regard to the geometrical product specifications. The proposed method can be summarized as follow: the first step consists of analyzing the interval of tolerance for the different specifications and to attribute to every geometrical entity a maximal uncertainty of measurement. This uncertainty depends on the angle of incidence between the laser plane and the scanned surface. In the second step, an approach based on the concept of visibility is used fro…
3D digitizing path planning for part inspection with laser scanning
2007
If the first work relating to the automation of the digitalization of machine elements goes back to approximately 25 years, the process of digitalization of parts with non-contact sensor remains nevertheless complex. It is not completely solved today, in particular from a metrological point of view. In this article, we consider the determination of the trajectory planning within the framework of the control of dimensional and geometrical specifications. The sensor used in this application is a laser planner scanner with CCD camera oriented and moved by a CMM. For this purpose, we have focused on the methodology used to determine the best possible viewpoints which will satisfy the digitizing…
