Hesitant versus confident family language policy: a case of two single-parent families in Finland

Abstract During the past decade, the field of family language policy has broadened its scope and turned its attention to diverse family configurations in versatile sociolinguistic contexts. The current study contributes to this endeavor by focusing on two single-parent families who live in Finland and who strive to support Russian as a family language. Applying nexus analysis as an epistemological stance and as an analytical lens, the study takes an emic perspective on family language policy. The essay analyses the atypical concept of border in the povest' by Ljudmila Ulickaja 'Veselye pochorony' (1997). This short novel offers several images related to the symbolic setting represented mainly by the city of New York, which embodies an idealized 'border city', where some Russians immigrants arrive and meet in 1991. Multimessenger search for sources of gravitational waves and high-energy neutrinos: Initial results for LIGO-Virgo and IceCube

No. of bitstreams: 0 Previous issue date: 2014-11-17 We report the results of a multimessenger search for coincident signals from the LIGO and Virgo gravitational-wave observatories and the partially completed IceCube high-energy neutrino detector, including periods of joint operation between 2007-2010. These include parts of the 2005-2007 run and the 2009-2010 run for LIGO-Virgo, and IceCube's observation periods with 22, 59 and 79 strings. First laser cooling of relativistic ions in a storage ring

The first successful laser cooling of ions at relativistic energies was observed at the Heidelberg TSR storage ring. A $^{7}\mathrm{Li}^{+}$-ion beam of 13.3 MeV was oberlapped with resonant copropagating and counterpropagating laser beams. The metastable ions were cooled from 260 K to a longitudinal temperature of below 3 K and decelerated by several keV. The longitudinal velocity distribution was determined by a fluorescence method. After laser cooling a strongly enhanced narrow peak appeared in the Schottky noise spectrum in addition to the uncooled ion distribution.
A coupled-cluster study of lanthanum trihalide structures

Coupled-cluster calculations were carried at the CCSD(T)-level in order to determine the structures and vibrational spectra of the lanthanum trihalides LaF3 and LaCl3. Two different approaches were employed to describe scalar relativistic effects; the quasi-relativistic Effective Core Potential approach and the all-electron Douglas–Kroll approach. We find LaF3 to be of pyramidal structure and LaCl3 to be planar. The obtained vibrational frequencies accord well with experimental measurements except for the ν2 mode. L'articolo analizza le questioni etiche inerenti le moderne prassi della medicina orientate all'appropritezza d'uso delle risorse economiche, delle tecnologie e chiama a responsabilità i decisori medici, perché deputati alla loro microallocazione. Ripercorrendo il passato proprio Ippocrate aveva scritto nel Giuramento che sottoponeva agli allievi: "... darò a ciascuno la dieta opportuna". L'articolo vuole affermare che nonostante i cambiamenti che le varie epoche apportano, il rapporto medico paziente è ispirato a principi invariabili e vuole criticare l'irresponsabilità della medicina difensivistica.

As an obsessive keyword, the Pannonian mud appears in several writings of Miroslav Krleza. It represents the core of Croatian periphery, in particular the Podravina region, which was for long time untouched by modernity, and oppressed by feudal governments even after the fall of the Austrian Empire, from 1918 onwards. In this timeless place watered by the river Drava, the mud acquires a paradigmatic role like a phenomenon that causes historical conflicts. However, its ambiguous status of metahistorical symbol of a long lasting collapse is a contradictory factor, because of the consequences arising from it are unpredictable.
