Visual Literacy From the Perspective of the VTS Method

The purpose of this article is to investigate visual literacy from the perspective of the VTS (Visual Thinking Strategies) method. The authors examine the viewpoints of seven American elementary school teachers on visual literacy and its meanings in the context of the VTS method. Data collection was done using a semi-structured questionnaire, which was followed by theory-driven content analysis. The acquisition of reading skills is a major landmark process in a human’s cognitive development. On the neural level, a new functional network develops during this time, as children typically learn to associate the well-known sounds of their spoken language with unfamiliar characters in alphabetic languages and finally access the meaning of written words, allowing for later reading. Tutkin pro gradu -tutkielmassani millaista eksotisointia etnisyydestä ja naiseudesta luotiin suomalaisen revyyteatteri Punaisen Myllyn (1946-1967) ohjelmistossa esitysten visuaalisten yksityiskohtien (puvustus, lavastus, rekvisiitta, ruumiinkieli) avulla. Lähestyn tutkimusaihettani ensisijaisesti valokuva-aineiston pohjalta kiinnittäen huomiota siihen, kuinka puvustuksen, lavastuksen ja rekvisiitan avulla luotiin ja vahvistettiin eksoottista ja eroottista kuvastoa. Spatial belonging is understood as a multidimensional process in which pictorial representation of the environment also plays an important role. However, various intersecting discursive and personal dimensions in the relations between images, photography and spatial belonging make researching the topic quite challenging. This article focuses on a methodology that combines photo-elicitation and visual analysis to elucidate the relations between images and spatial belonging, and to explore the ways in which the mental images created by discursive landscape imagery can affect the formation of people’s place relations and feelings of spatial belonging. Grafiikkaan panostetaan pelialalla paljon. Siksi on tärkeää tarkastella, millä tavoilla pelin aikana pelaajalle näkyvästä grafiikasta saadaan mahdollisimman suuri hyöty pelikokemukseen nähden. Tässä tutkimuksessa selvitetään, millä keinoilla pelikokemusta voidaan mitata ja havainnoidaan erityisesti, miten visuaalisuuden vaikutusta pelikokemukseen mitataan. Many visual effects are based on mathematical, geometrical procedures. Creating visual illusions through playful activities hold exciting pedagogical opportunities for raising students’ interest towards mathematics and the technical aspects of visual arts. The Experience Workshop Math-Art Movement has a number of thematic workshops — developed through interdisciplinary collaborations between mathematics teachers, artists and scholars — that are connected to perspective illusions and visual paradoxes. Children in the visual coverage of the European refugee crisis: A case study of the World Press Photo 2016

Shifts in the visual coverage of refugees arriving in Europe and prominent compassion fatigue emphasize the need to examine visual strategies utilized to report on the crisis. This study focuses on representations of refugee children using a case of the World Press Photo (WPP) 2016. The material was interpreted with a model for visual rhetorical interpretation of journalistic photographs. Findings indicate the main visual elements involved in representing refugee children: visual trope of the migrant father, relation between children and barriers, visual oxymoron (juxtaposition of contradictory elements) and atmosphere in photographs.
