In Brussels in 1549 Charles V commissioned four bronze and four marble sculptures from Leone Leoni, to which were added new orders. The sculptor worked on them, especially the bronzes, in Milan, and they were shipped to Spain along with other works at the time of the arrival of the Emperor and the Court. This article discusses the history and evolution of the marbles and a bust (Prado Museum: E-260, E-262, E-267, E-269, E-291), which were sent from Genoa to Cartagena, where they remained until 1568. Optimizing the use of spineless cactus in the finishing diet of lambs: physicochemical properties and sensory characteristics of meat.

BACKGROUND The use of spineless cactus in finishing diets for lambs improves the carcass quality. However, data about its influence on meat traits is very scarce. The effects of spineless cactus inclusion in the finishing diet of lambs at four levels (0, 150, 300 and 450 g kg-1 of dry matter, DM) in replacement of Tifton hay on the physicochemical and sensory properties of meat were studied. RESULTS The spineless cactus modified the chemical composition increasing the protein (P < 0.001) and the fat (P < 0.01) contents of meat, presenting the greatest values in lambs fed diets with 150 and 300 g kg-1 (DM) replacing levels, respectively. Phenolic profiles of raw mono- and polyfloral honeys from Latvia

Abstract The phenolic compound profiles of 393 raw mono- and polyfloral Latvian honey samples were investigated using a targeted ultra-high performance liquid chromatography-high resolution mass spectrometry (UHPLC-HRMS) method. This strategy allowed simultaneous determination of the content of 11 phenolic acids, 18 flavonoids, 2 plant hormones, and 3 water-soluble vitamins in honey samples of botanically diverse origin, including buckwheat (Fagopyrum esculentum), heather (Calluna vulgaris), linden (Tilia cordata), and rapeseed (Brassica napus). Phenolic compounds and abscisic acid as potential markers for the floral origin of two Polish unifloral honeys

The phenolic profiles of Polish honey samples from heather (Calluna vulgaris L.) and buckwheat (Fagopyrum esculentum L.) were determined. The phenolic components were isolated from honey samples using Amberlite-XAD-2 as a solid-phase extraction sorbent. For the determination of the composition of the honey extracts HPLC with photodiode array detector was applied. Identification and quantification of phenolics was performed by comparison of their retention times and UV spectra with those of standard solutions of pure reference substances and by using those references as external standards. Plant regeneration from isolated cells ofLavandula latifolia medicus

Single cells were obtained from hypocotyl-derived callus ofLavandula latifolia Medicus. Cells were plated in Murashige and Skoog medium supplemented with indoleacetic acid (IAA), benzyladenine (BA), and several IAA-BA combinations. Cell division required the simultaneous presence of IAA and BA in the culture medium, but callus formation was only achieved with 0.1 or 1 mg/liter IAA and 2 mg/liter BA. To induce organogenesis, calli were transferred to various regeneration media. Influence of fruit canopy position and maturity on yield determinants and chemical composition of virgin olive oil

Background While both maturity and light exposure are important factors determining olive fruit physiology, the relationship between maturity, canopy position and optimal harvesting time has not been well-studied. To understand the interaction of these factors, olive fruits from upper and lower layers of the canopy were harvested from September to January. Maturity, moisture and fat content of the fruit as well as the quality and minor components of the oil extracted were measured. Abstract The essential oil of Nepeta curviflora Boiss. (Lamiaceae) grown in Lebanon, obtained by hydrodistillation of aerial parts, was analyzed by GC and GC/MS. Thirty-five compounds were identified constituting 93.2% of the oil, the major components being β-caryophyllene (50.2%), caryophyllene oxide (6.4%) and (E)-β-farnesene (5.3%).

Tannin analysis of chestnut bark samples (Castanea sativa Mill.) by HPLC-DAD-MS.

In the present investigation, an HPLC-DAD/ESI-MS method for the complete analysis of tannins and other phenolic compounds of different commercial chestnut bark samples was developed. A total of seven compounds (vescalin, castalin, gallic acid, vescalagin, 1-O-galloyl castalagin, castalagin and ellagic acid) were separated and quantified, being 1-O-galloyl castalagin tentatively identified and found for the first time in chestnut bark samples. Thus, this method provided information regarding the composition and quality of chestnut bark samples, which is required since these samples are commercialised due to their biochemical properties as ingredients of food supplements.
