Bridging the gap between research and practice : using phenomenographic findings to develop training for career practitioners

2021

AbstractThis study contends that phenomenography offers both a useful research method and practical tools for developing education and training for career practitioners. After introducing the basic principles of phenomenography, the study reviews previous research on its potential in developing pedagogical practices. It explores how the phenomenographic findings were utilized to design an online skills training programme for career practitioners. The study finds that phenomenographic research serves three practical pedagogical purposes: (1) revealing how learners understand certain concepts or phenomena, (2) elucidating how these understandings differ; and (3) identifying critical aspects i…

Recognition of polychromatic three-dimensional objects

2004

We propose to use optical multichannel correlation in various chromatic systems to obtain a setup for recognition of polychromatic three-dimensional (3-D) objects based on Fourier-transform profilometry. Because red-green-blue color components are not able to split the luminance information of objects in a defined component, when the 3-D objects are brighter than the reference objects the correlation result gives false alarms. We demonstrate that it is possible to use different color spaces that can split luminance from chromatic information to yield adequate recognition of polychromatic 3-D objects. We show experimental results that prove the utility of the proposed method.

Hybrid Methods for Robust Irradiance Analysis and 3-D Shape Reconstruction from Images

1994

The analysis of the differential structure of images is an interesting task in machine vision, among other reasons because it can provide relevant featural representation of images, suited for higher level information processing task like geometry reconstruction and object recognition. The importance of invariants of the field of isophotae on lambertian surfaces in shape perception by means of chiaroscuro is discussed in (Koenderink and Van Doom, 1980). In their approach to shape from shading, (Breton et al, 1992) represent the shading of the image by means of its shading flow field, i.e. by the first order differential structure of the image expressed as the isoluminance direction and grad…

Angiocardiographic digital still images compressed via irreversible methods: concepts and experiments.

1997

Abstract We defined, implemented and tested two new methods for irreversible compression of angiocardiographic still images: brightness error limitation (BEL) and pseudo-gradient adaptive brightness and contrast error limitation (PABCEL). The scan path used to compress the digital images is based on the Peano–Hilbert plane-filling curve. The compression methods limit, for each pixel, the brightness errors introduced when approximating the original image (i.e. the difference between the values of corresponding pixels as grey levels). Additional limitations are imposed to the contrast error observed when considering along the scan path consecutive pixels of both the original and the reconstru…

Corresponding-pair procedure: a new approach to simulation of dichromatic color perception.

2004

The dichromatic color appearance of a chromatic stimulus T can be described if a stimulus S is found that verifies that a normal observer experiences the same sensation viewing S as a dichromat viewing T. If dichromatic and normal versions of the same color vision model are available, S can be computed by applying the inverse of the normal model to the descriptors of T obtained with the dichromatic model. We give analytical form to this algorithm, which we call the corresponding-pair procedure. The analytical form highlights the requisites that a color vision model must verify for this procedure to be used. To show the capabilities of the method, we apply the algorithm to different color vi…

Effect of operating conditions and feedstock composition on the properties of manganese oxide or quartz charcoal pellets for the use in ferroalloy in…

2020

peer-reviewed The full text of this article will not be available until the embargo expires on the 26/12/2021 This study investigates the effect of heat treatment temperature on the properties of charcoal composite pellets used for the reduction of ferroalloys. The heavy fraction of biooil was used as a binder for the charcoal ore pellet preparation. The effect of heat treatment temperature on the pellet shrinkage was related to the degree of reduction which varied with feedstock and ore composition. The results showed that the size and shape of the charcoal pellets were not affected by the biooil devolatilization. Manganese charcoal pellets showed higher electrical resistance during pyroly…

XAFS Studies of High-Valent Porphyrinato Manganèse Complexes with Ozone

1997

We produce strong evidence of the interaction of ozone with a series of Manganese (III) porphyrinato complexes to form a well defined reactive intermediate. In the latter species, the Manganese atom which is formally in a tetravalent (IV) state, is (at least) hexacoordinated with the metal unambiguously lying in the basal plane of the four pyrrolic nitrogens of the porphyrin macrocycle. Substitution of Bromine or Chlorine axial ligands by ozonids is most likely to happen. This conclusion is also supported by XANES and EXAFS spectra recorded at the Chlorine K-edge which suggest that ozone may even form with chlorine a complex anion.

Size, Form and Flexibility of the Rubber Molecule

1962

Abstract Natural rubber can be brominated in dilute cyclohexane solution, whereby the molecular weight, corresponding to the bromine content, increases. For brominated rubber, increasing bromine content makes cyclohexane an increasingly poorer solvent, which is shown by a contraction of the molecule coils and a decrease in the second virial coefficient. Quantitative results were obtained through viscosity and light scattering measurements. Cyclohexane solutions of brominated rubber containing about 43% bromine have a θ point at room temperature. Here the second virial coefficient is zero and the coil has an ideal Gaussian density distribution. In this state the coil diameter is about 1.6 ti…

A major shift in Late Bronze Age metalwork production around 900 BC

2023

Our traditional chronology systems hardly ever reflect cultural changes accurately and may even mask real moments of discontinuity. This is particularly true for the second part of the Late Bronze Age Urnfield Period where a radical change in iconography can actually be noticed around 900 BC. Within a very short period, the famous solar bird-boat iconography, which had widely developed over centuries and given rise to the elaborate and sophisticated ornamentation known on solid hilted swords from the 11th/10th century, takes a back seat and we can see a single new symbol coming to the fore, concentrating figurative representation in form of a singular vase-shaped build (Wirth S. 2021, 652-6…

Multiple-scan voltammetry and OCP: Archaeometric tools for dating archaeological bronzes

2021

[EN] The application of a multiple-scan strategy to nanosamples taken from 18 cross-sections of Bronze Age arms and armour, as well as two Roman coins using two solid-state electrochemical techniques, the voltammetry of immobilized microparticles (VIMP) and open circuit potential measurements (OCP) is described. The voltammetric responses in contact with aqueous acetate buffer can be attributed to the reduction of cuprite with variable degree of compaction and crystallinity revealing significant differences in the gradient of such properties with depth. Such differences are also revealed by "dry" OCP measurements connecting points in the cross section near and separated from the corrosion l…
