Attributional and relational influence of numerals in S’ncamtho metaphors

2020

AbstractYouth varieties in Africa such as S’ncamtho, the Ndebele-based youth variety in Zimbabwe, and urban vernaculars interact with urban and modern experiences which offer them new materials and experiences to base their metaphors on compared to older metaphors in the base languages. This paper explores the use of numeral qualities and associations in the conceptualisation and orthographic representation of S’ncamtho metaphors. S’ncamtho is popular with urban youth and this makes social media platforms such as Twitter, Facebook, WhatsApp, SMS and Instagram key in the performance of the youth variety, a performance that includes the creation, use and contraction of metaphors. Numerals off…

Structure, nanohardness and photoluminescence of ZnO ceramics based on nanopowders

2015

ZnO ceramics obtained from grained powders with different grain size by hot pressing and ceramics from tetrapods nanopowders obtained by press-less sintering have been investigated under identical conditions. Ceramics obtained by hot pressing were optically transparent but were composed of large inhomogeneous grains (d = 8–35 μm) exhibiting a substructure. Decreased values of elastic modulus within a grain and a wide defect-associated ('green') photoluminescence (PL) band at 2.2–2.8 eV in conjunction with a weak excitonic band indicate a high concentration of residual point defects in hot pressed ZnO ceramics. Utilization of more small-grained powders contributes to the formation of more un…

Numerical modelling of the electrochemical behaviour of 316L stainless steel based upon static and dynamic experimental microcapillary-based techniqu…

2008

Microcapillary-based techniques allow the selection and interrogation of single metallurgical sites and are therefore becoming increasingly popular to investigate the electrochemical behaviour of metallic phases and non-metallic heterogeneities in alloys. This study has been carried out to assess the differences between current measurements made using a 'closed' microcapillary system (the electrochemical microcell technique) with current measurements derived from a flowing 'open' microcapillary droplet cell (the scanning droplet cell). The experimental results were compared with calculations derived from a model system adopting a finite element approach. The corrosion system consists of fou…

UML Style Graphical Notation and Editor for OWL 2

2010

OWL is becoming the most widely used knowledge representation language. It has several textual notations but no standard graphical notation apart from verbose ODM UML. We propose an extension to UML class diagrams (heavyweight extension) that allows a compact OWL visualization. The compactness is achieved through the native power of UML class diagrams extended with optional Manchester encoding for class expressions thus largely eliminating the need for explicit anonymous class visualization. To use UML class diagram notation we had to modify its semantics to support Open World Assumption that is central to OWL. We have implemented the proposed compact visualization for OWL 2 in a UML style …

Polarization Switching in Heterophase Nanostructures: PLZT Relaxor Ceramics

2005

The polarization switching is experimentally investigated in hot-pressed PLZT-x/65/35 ceramics with a lanthanum content from 5 to 12 at. %. The specific features in the temperature dependence of the polarization switching in a heterophase state are interpreted by analyzing the change in the switched charge measured over wide ranges of fields and temperatures. Particular emphasis is placed on the role of depolarization fields induced by interphase boundaries. A model of the evolution of polydomain nanostructures with a change in the temperature and in the response to an external field is considered. It is assumed that the low-temperature dielectric anomaly and the temperature hysteresis are …

Effect of Gold on the HDS Activity of Supported Palladium Catalysts

2002

Abstract The effect of gold on palladium catalysts supported on amorphous aluminosilicate was investigated in the hydrodesulfurization of thiophene. A series of bimetallic AuxPdy catalysts was prepared by the slow deposition–precipitation method with decomposition of urea. The structural and surface properties of the samples were analyzed by X-ray diffraction and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy techniques at different stages of the catalyst life. After calcination at 673 K, gold-enriched solid solutions of approximately Au90Pd10 and Au80Pd20 composition were formed for all samples of different Au/Pd ratios, along with free palladium phases. Au80Pd20 was the prevailing phase. Hydrogen treat…

Metal Chalcohalides: Next Generation Photovoltaic Materials?

2021

Metal chalcohalides have recently been highlighted as so-far overlooked semiconductors that could play an important role in the future of photovoltaics (PV). Indeed, the blooming field of emergent PV technologies is still in search for stable, efficient, and environmentally-friendly light-harvesting materials to be used either in single-junction solar cells or multijunction devices in combination with silicon or another absorbers. Under the broad terms of metal chalcohalides, there exists a plethora of semiconductor materials with different chemical, structural, and optoelectronic characteristics. While some have already been implemented in solar cells with power conversion efficiencies up …

For the use of sound. Film sound analysis for audio-description: some key issues

2012

This article aims to outline the issues involved in the production and reception of film sound with a view to identifying its challenges for audio-description (AD). It thereby hopes to provide insights into the way in which a careful analysis and integration of film sound and sound effects are required for the production of coherence in AD, if it is to function as part of a new filmic text. However, the article also points to the limits of analysis and interpretation, and to the need for reception research as well as collaboration with visually impaired users. A detailed analysis of a scene from Saving Private Ryan (Spielberg 1998), a film that won an Oscar for best sound effect editing, de…

Iris-fixated toric phakic intraocular lens: Three-year follow-up

2006

Purpose To evaluate the 3-year safety, efficacy, predictability, and stability of iris-fixated toric phakic intraocular lens (pIOL) implantation for the correction of myopia or hyperopia with astigmatism. Setting Department of Ophthalmology, Johannes Gutenberg University, Mainz, and Department of Ophthalmology, University Clinic, Bochum, Germany. Methods A prospective clinical trial of 40 eyes of 23 patients with high ametropia and astigmatism was conducted. Best spectacle-corrected visual acuity (BSCVA), uncorrected visual acuity, refraction, astigmatism, intraocular pressure, slitlamp biomicroscopy, and indirect ophthalmoscopy were measured preoperatively and postoperatively. Carbonate-coordinated metal complexes precede the formation of liquid amorphous mineral emulsions of divalent metal carbonates†

2011

During the mineralisation of metal carbonates MCO3 (M = Ca, Sr, Ba, Mn, Cd, Pb) liquid-like amorphous intermediates emerge. These intermediates that form via a liquid/liquid phase separation behave like a classical emulsion and are stabilized electrostatically. The occurrence of these intermediates is attributed to the formation of highly hydrated networks whose stability is mainly based on weak interactions and the variability of the metal-containing pre-critical clusters. Their existence and compositional freedom are evidenced by electrospray ionization mass spectrometry (ESI-MS). Liquid intermediates in non-classical crystallisation pathways seem to be more common than assumed.
