Structure and composition of sputter-deposited nickel-tungsten oxide films

Films of mixed nickel-tungsten oxide, denoted NixW1-x oxide, were prepared by reactive DC magnetron co-sputtering from metallic targets and were characterized by Rutherford backscattering spectrometry. X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, X-ray diffractometry and Raman spectroscopy. A consistent picture of the structure and composition emerged, and at x<0.50 the films comprised a mixture of amorphous WO3 and nanosized NiWO4, at x = 0.50 the nanosized NiWO4 phase was dominating, and at x>0.50 the films contained nanosized NiO and NiWO4.

Investigation of phthalocyanine crystals exposed to NO2 ambient gas

Crystals of free base phthalocyanine (H2pc) and its unsubstituted metal derivatives Mpc (where M=Ni, Cu, Zn, Pb, and pc=C32H16N8 2−=phthalocyanine ligand) were examined after being exposed to NO2 ambient gas. Scanning electron microscopy (SEM) supported by X-ray microprobe analysis (EDAX), UV–Vis and FTIR spectroscopy as well as X-ray powder diffractometry (XRD) were applied to study the crystals chemistry and surface morphology. The NO2 molecules were found to penetrate the crystal unit which led to the breakdown of the phthalocyanine macrocycle. X-ray Spectroscopy of (Ba,Sr,La)(Fe,Zn,Y)O3-δIdentifies Structural and Electronic Features Favoring Proton Uptake

Mixed protonic–electronic conducting oxides are key functional materials for protonic ceramic fuel cells. Here, (Ba,Sr,La)(Fe,Zn,Y)O3−δ perovskites are comprehensively investigated by X-ray spectroscopy (in oxidized and reduced states). Extended X-ray absorption fine structure shows that Zn,Y doping strongly increases the tendency for Fe–O–Fe buckling. X-ray absorption near-edge spectroscopy at the Fe K-edge and X-ray Raman scattering at the O K edge demonstrate that both iron and oxygen states are involved when the samples are oxidized, and for the Zn,Y doped materials, the hole transfer from iron to oxygen is less pronounced. Improvement of photo-stability of LLDPE-based nanocomposites

LLDPE-based nanocomposites undergo faster photo-oxidation than the unfilled matrix and the extent of their physical properties deterioration, namely elongation at break and tensile strength, is dependent on the organo-nanoclay loading. The observed acceleration is not due to faster photo-oxidation but rather due to a reduction of the oxidation induction time. The presence in the organoclays of trace amounts of metal ions may be promoting catalytic photodegradation. While UV absorbers provide useful protection, use of a metal deactivator has been found to greatly enhance the photo-stability of the LLDPE-based nanocomposites. ZnO – Yb2O3 composite optical ceramics: Synthesis, structure and spectral-luminescent properties

International audience; Zinc oxide optical ceramics containing 0 – 2 wt% ytterbium are prepared byuniaxial hot pressing of commercial oxides at 1150 and 1180 °C. The ceramics have themain crystalline phase of hexagonal wurtzite-type ZnO. Ytterbium ions do not enter theZnO crystals but form a cubic sesquioxide phase of Yb2O3 located at the ZnO grainboundaries. Micromechanical approach of the high temperature oxidation of zirconium: study of the Zr/ZrO2 interfacial epitaxy with Bollmann's method

The method of Bollmann has been used to determine the role of epitaxy in the formation of the mechanical stress field near the metal/oxide interface during the high temperature oxidation of zirconium. The strains due to epitaxy combine with those due to both oxygen diffusion in metal and thermal expansion of the metal/oxide composite in a model based on a micromechanical formalism. The calculated values are compared to experimental results and the applicability of Bollmann's method to this problem is discussed.

Electrochemistry of vanadium-doped ZrSiO4Site-selective electrocatalytic effect on nitrite oxidation

The electrochemistry of vanadium-doped zircon (VxZrSiO4, 0 < x < 0.10) has been studied using abrasive-conditioned paraffin-impregnated graphite electrodes. It is compared with that of ZrSiO4, ZrO2, and vanadium-doped tetragonal and monoclinic zirconias. In contact with acetic/acetate and HCl + NaCl electrolytes, zirconium materials are reduced to Zr(III) at potentials near to −0.5 versus AgCl/Ag and to Zr metal at potentials more negative than −1.2 V, via proton-assisted reductive processes, influenced by the complexing action of chloride ions. Thio(bisphenolato) complexes of the type [M2(mu-tbop-kappa3O,S,O)2Cl4] [M = Zr 1, Hf 2 and tbop = 2,2-thiobis{4-(1,1,3,3-tetramethyl-butyl)phenolate}] were prepared by HCl elimination from tbopH2 and MCl4. Substitution of the chlorides in 1 and 2 by 2,6-diisopropylphenolato groups (dipp) generates new compounds [M2(mu-tbop-kappa3O,S,O)2(dipp)4] (M = Zr 3, Hf 4).
