Mössbauer mineralogy of rock, soil, and dust at Gusev crater, Mars: Spirit's journey through weakly altered olivine basalt on the plains and pervasiv…

2006

The Moessbauer spectrometer on Spirit measured the oxidation state of Fe, identified Fe-bearing phases, and measured relative abundances of Fe among those phases for surface materials on the plains and in the Columbia Hills of Gusev crater. Eight Fe-bearing phases were identified: olivine, pyroxene, ilmenite, magnetite, nanophase ferric oxide (npOx), hematite, goethite, and a Fe(3+)-sulfate. Adirondack basaltic rocks on the plains are nearly unaltered (Fe(3+)/Fe(sub T) Px), and minor npOx and magnetite. Columbia Hills basaltic rocks are nearly unaltered (Peace and Backstay), moderately altered (WoolyPatch, Wishstone, and Keystone), and pervasively altered (e.g., Clovis, Uchben, Watchtower, …

Chemical composition and complex refractive index of Saharan Mineral Dust at Izaña, Tenerife (Spain) derived by electron microscopy

2007

Abstract Samples from two strong homogeneous dust plumes from the Saharan desert reaching Izana (Tenerife, Spain) in July and August 2005 were taken with a miniature impactor system and filter samplers. Size, aspect ratio and chemical composition of more than 22,000 individual particles were studied by scanning electron microscopy. The mineralogical phase composition of about 200 particles was investigated by transmission electron microscopy. In addition, the aerosol size distribution was measured with an optical particle spectrometer. In all samples, the aerosol was dominated by mineral dust with an average composition (by volume) of 64% silicates, 6% quartz, 5% calcium-rich particles, 14%…

Mineralogy of volcanic rocks in Gusev Crater, Mars: Reconciling Mössbauer, Alpha Particle X-ray Spectrometer, and Miniature Thermal Emission Spectrom…

2008

Complete sets of mineral abundances for relatively unaltered volcanic or volcaniclastic rocks in Gusev Crater have been determined by modeling Mössbauer subspectral areas as mineral weight percentages, and combining those percentages with the proportions of iron-free minerals not detected by Mössbauer (normative plagioclase, apatite, and chromite, as calculated from Alpha Particle X-Ray Spectrometer (APXS) chemical analyses). Comparisons of synthetic thermal emission spectra calculated for these mineral modes with measured Miniature Thermal Emission Spectrometer (Mini-TES) spectra for the same rock classes show either good agreements or discrepancies that we attribute to sodic pla…

Metal-support and preparation influence on the structural and electronic properties of gold catalysts

2006

Abstract Nanostructured gold catalysts supported on CeO2 and SiO2 were prepared by the deposition–precipitation (DP) and the solvated metal atom dispersion (SMAD) techniques. The structural and electronic properties of the catalysts were investigated by X-ray diffraction (XRD), X-ray absorption spectroscopy (XAS) and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS). Gold was found as small metal nanoparticles (cluster size ∼2 nm) in the SMAD-prepared samples and in ionic state in the DP catalysts. The catalytic activity of the samples was tested in the reaction of low temperature CO oxidation. Gold nanosized particles in a pure metallic state exhibited a worse catalytic performance, both on ceria and…

The growth of oxide platelets on nickel in pure oxygen. II. Surface analyses and growth mechanism

1993

The structural properties of NiO platelets emerging from a primary oxide layer by oxidation of pretreated nickels in pure oxygen between 650 and 800° C have been investigated in relation with the initial metallic layers and the primary oxide. Surface composition and segregation of impurities were also studied by X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy and Auger electron spectroscopy. Textural properties and structural orientation of both the primary oxide layer and the platelets were analyzed by X-ray diffraction and transmission electron microscopy. Platelets grew along {111} planes, leading to elliptical or semicircular bicrystals. The driving force for the present type of growth originates from…

A Mechano-Chemical Coupling for Hydrogen Diffusion in Metals Based on a Thermodynamic Approach

2014

Hydrogen diffusion in metals is still an ongoing topic of research due to its technical relevance (hydrogen embrittlement, hydrogen storage...). In the last decades, significant progress in understanding the time evolution of the hydrogen concentration in solids was completed. This paper presents a modeling of hydrogen diffusion with a general and thermodynamically based diffusion concept coupled with mechanical and chemical aspects. This model was previously used to simulate the oxidation of a metal [1][2]. This concept has been upgraded to offer a thoroughly macroscopic behavior law used to simulate hydrogen diffusion in metal parts under mechanical loadings. The thermodynamic approach of…

Inhibitoren der Korrosion 21 (1) - Autoxidationsstudien an Fe2+-Salzen der Tetramethylen-1,4-bis-phosphonsäure, der Hexamethylen-1,6-bis-phosphonsäur…

1978

Corrosion I…

A Trade-Off Between Current Reproduction and Moult in the Pied Flycatcher- an Experiment

1994

1. Mechanisms causing costs of reproduction in birds are poorly understood. Here we focus on the renewing of feathers (= moult) which may be a possible physiological link between successive breeding attempts. 2. We performed clutch size manipulations to study whether the reproductive effort of the Pied Flycatcher (Ficedula hypoleuca) has any effect on the initiation and progress of the moult in the late nesting period. 3. The absolute timing of breeding did not affect the onset of parents' moult, i.e. latebreeding individuals did not start moulting before nestlings were fledged more frequently than early ones. This indicates that moult was closely related to the breeding schedule of each in…

Correction of Long Vehicle Off Tracking by Multiple Axle Steering

2019

When planning the road vehicles for the transport of passengers or goods, engineers should take care to contrast some undesirable phenomena in the lateral dynamics, such as high-speed instability or off tracking. While the former is less troubling in the slow heavy vehicles, the latter is a serious problem due to the risk of invading the neighbouring lanes. The use of multi-wheel steering may completely cancel this drawback and, pursuing an optimized correlation among the steering angles, a functional inter-dependence based on the cubic “witch of Agnesi” is found to be very promising. Simple control systems with electromechanical or electronic components may be easily implemented for the mu…

Kinetics of Zn2+ complexation by a ditopic phenanthroline-azamacrocyclic scorpiand-like receptor.

2012

Coordination of Zn(2+) to a ditopic phenanthroline-macrocycle receptor takes place in three steps, the first one being the coordination to the phenanthroline, followed by the slow movement of the metal to the polyamine macrocycle and a final re-arrangement to coordinate the pendent arm.
