Serum vitamin D levels of patients with oral squamous cell carcinoma (OSCC) and expression of vitamin D receptor in oral precancerous lesions and OSCC
2015
Background: Resistance to programmed cell death (apoptosis) is a crucial factor for the carcinogenesis of oral squamous cell carcinoma (OSCC). Vitamin D (calcitriol) may overcome apoptosis resistance in tumor cells of OSCC. Vitamin D receptor (VDR) expression in oral precancerous lesions of OSCC has not been analyzed and serum vitamin D level seems to be a predictor of cancer development. Material and Methods: Expression of VDR was analyzed in normal oral mucosa (n=5), oral precursor lesions (simple hyperplasia, n=11; squamous intraepithelial neoplasia, SIN I-III, n=35), and OSCC specimen (n=42) by immunohistochemistry (IHC). Moreover, serum vitamin D levels were measured by 25(OH)D3 (calci…
Vitamin D in Pregnancy and Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder-like Symptoms in Childhood
2015
Vitamin D status during prenatal brain development may influence risk of attention deficit and hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) symptoms in childhood. However, there are no prospective studies addressing this hypothesis. We aimed to examine whether maternal vitamin D status in pregnancy is associated with risk of ADHD-like symptoms in offspring. We conducted a prospective study analyzing data from 1,650 mother-child pairs from five birth cohorts embedded in the INMA Project (Spain, 1997-2008). Maternal vitamin D status in pregnancy was estimated by measuring plasma concentration of 25-hydroxyvitamin D3 [25(OH)D3] at 13 weeks of gestation. Children were assessed by teachers for ADHD-like symptom…
Severe and uncontrolled adult asthma is associated with vitamin D insufficiency and deficiency
2012
Background Vitamin D has effects on the innate and adaptive immune system. In asthmatic children low vitamin D levels are associated with poor asthma control, reduced lung function, increased medication intake, and exacerbations. Little is known about vitamin D in adult asthma patients or its association with asthma severity and control. Methods Clinical parameters of asthma control and 25-hydroxyvitamin D (25(OH)D) serum concentrations were evaluated in 280 adult asthma patients (mean ± SD: 45.0 ± 13.8 yrs., 40% male, FEV1 74.9 ± 23.4%, 55% severe, 51% uncontrolled). Results 25(OH)D concentrations in adult asthmatics were low (25.6 ±11.8 ng/ml) and vitamin D insufficiency or deficiency (vi…
Hypovitaminosis D and fat mass in healthy older people
2016
Prospective studies have suggested that hypovitaminosis D can predict the onset of obesity, but they relied mainly on body mass index, which could be scarcely reliable in older people. We investigated whether baseline hypovitaminosis D could predict higher fat mass (FM) levels using dual-energy X-ray absorptiometry in a sample of 116 fit and healthy older subjects. Although no significant differences in FM estimates emerged between subjects with and without hypovitaminosis D at the baseline, abdominal FM was found significantly higher in the former group (with hypovitaminosis D at the baseline) than in the latter after 3 years of follow-up. Adjusted logistic regression analysis confirmed th…
Vitamin D Deficiency: The Missing Etiological Factor in the Development of Juvenile Osteochondrosis Dissecans?
2016
BACKGROUND Vitamin D deficiency can result in rickets and hypocalcemia during infant and childhood growth. There is an increasing interest in the role of vitamin D with regards to childhood bone health. Osteochondrosis dissecans (OD) is a common disease affecting different joints. To date, the exact etiology of OD still remains unclear. The aim of this study was to evaluate a possible association of vitamin D deficiency and juvenile OD. METHODS A retrospective chart review of the years 2010 to 2015 of all orthopaedic patients with an initial diagnosis of juvenile OD admitted to undergo operative treatment of the OD was performed. Patient demographics, medical history, information on sports …
Vitamin D, parathyroid hormone, and bone mass in adolescents.
2005
This article provides a review of the evidence identifying the factors related to vitamin D status in adolescents. The prevalence of vitamin D deficiency based on 25-hydroxyvitamin D [25(OH)D] of <25 nmol/L ranges from 0 to 32% depending on the season measured and the latitude of the population assessed. The factors that have been reported to affect serum 25(OH)D in adolescents include ethnicity, gender, puberty stage, parathyroid hormone (PTH), dietary vitamin D intake, and sun exposure. Vitamin D supplementation studies are limited to small populations and with supplementation focused on winter months when sunlight may be inadequate. The effects of vitamin D status and supplementation on …
High prevalence of hypovitaminosis D in Sicilian children affected by growth hormone deficiency and its improvement after 12 months of replacement tr…
2014
PURPOSE: Although the correlation between vitamin D and growth hormone (GH)-insulin-like growth factor 1 (IGF1) axis is documented, as of date, few and conflicting studies have prospectively analyzed vitamin D before and after GH treatment. Our aim was to evaluate as to how the condition of GH deficiency (GHD) or GH treatment influences vitamin D in children. METHODS: Eighty Sicilian GHD children (M/F 58/22; mean age 10.3 years), grouped according to the season of evaluation in group A (June-September; 41 children) and group B (November-February; 39 children), were evaluated at baseline and after 12 months of GH treatment. RESULTS: Twenty-eight children (35 %) were vitamin D insufficient an…
Hypovitaminosis D predicts the onset of orthostatic hypotension in older adults
2016
A number of small cross sectional studies have demonstrated that hypovitaminosis D (represented by low 25 hydroxyvitamin D (25OHD) levels) is associated with orthostatic hypotension (OH). We investigated if hypovitaminosis D is associated with the onset of OH in older adults over a follow-up of 4.4 years. 25OHD was categorized using sex-specific quartiles; OH was defined as a drop of ≤20 mm Hg in systolic or ≤10 mm Hg in diastolic blood pressure <3 minutes of standing. Among 1308 elderly without OH at baseline, using an adjusted logistic regression analysis and taking those with higher baseline serum 25OHD as reference, there was a significant increase in the onset of OH in those with lo…
The prevalence of vitamin D deficiency in patients with vertebral fragility fractures
2015
Hypovitaminosis D has been identified as a common risk factor for fragility fractures and poor fracture healing. Epidemiological data on vitamin D deficiency have been gathered in various populations, but the association between vertebral fragility fractures and hypovitaminosis D, especially in males, remains unclear. The purpose of this study was to evaluate serum levels of 25-hydroxyvitamin D (25-OH D) in patients presenting with vertebral fragility fractures and to determine whether patients with a vertebral fracture were at greater risk of hypovitaminosis D than a control population. Furthermore, we studied the seasonal variations in the serum vitamin D levels of tested patients in ord…
Metabolic Syndrome and Vitamin D Levels in Patients with Obstructive Sleep Apnea Syndrome
2018
Numerous studies have indicated that obstructive sleep apnea syndrome (OSAS), may contribute to the development of metabolic syndrome (MetS) and diabetes. Moreover, OSAS has been associated with lowered vitamin D (Vit D) levels, but reports are inconclusive. Aim of the study was to compare Vit D levels according to the presence of MetS and its components in OSAS patients. The presence of MetS was evaluated and serum 25-hydroxy vitamin D [25(OH)D] levels were measured in consecutive newly diagnosed, by polysomnography, subjects with OSAS.A total of 107 subjects (88 men) with OSAS were included in the study. Patients were divided into group A (OSAS with MetS group: 55 subjects) and group B (OS…
