A wealth of theoretical and empirical arguments have suggested that music triggers emotional responses by resembling the inflections of expressive vocalizations, but have done so using low-level acoustic parameters (pitch, loudness, speed) that, in fact, may not be processed by the listener in reference to human voice. Here, we take the opportunity of the recent availability of computational models that allow the simulation of three specifically vocal emotional behaviours: smiling, vocal tremor and vocal roughness. ABSTRACT Background The aim of this study was to evaluate the reliability of intraoperative neuromonitoring through recurrent laryngeal nerve stimulation and simultaneous laryngeal palpation (NSLP) in predicting postoperative vocal cord palsy and in providing useful information in the decision to perform a staged surgery in initially planned total thyroidectomy. Roentgenological observations on vocal fold length-changes with special reference to register transition and open/covered voice

This paper examines the length-changes of the vocal folds as a function of voice pitch. Changes in normalized vocal fold elongation (strain) were measured indirectly from calcification points in several laryngeal structures from roentgenological exposures during singing. Changes in vocal fold strain are shown to occur mainly in the register transition area, i.e. the area within which all register changes take place. Changes in vocal fold strain appeared similar in male and female subjects. The primary aim of the study was to assess the effects of choral class singing on vocal performance in primary school children. In particular, changes of the singing voice in terms of voice range profiles (VRP) and dysphonia severity index (DSI) were measured over the period of one school year. Singing as a form of vocal imitation - Mechanisms and deficits

There has been a recent upsurge of interest in the neural and cognitive bases of inaccurate singing, commonly referred to as “tone deafness.” Explanations of this deficit have commonly focused on perceptual and motor functions. It is clear, however, that neither of these mechanisms can fully account for deficits in singing. We summarize the results of several studies concerning inaccurate, or “poor pitch” singing. Taken together, the results of these studies argue that the basis for singing-related deficits lies in the link between perception and action, rather than strictly motoric or perceptual factors.
