Posterior variant of alien limb syndrome with sudden clinical onset as self-hitting associated with thalamic stroke
2020
We present a case of sudden postischaemic onset of alien limb syndrome, with unintentional self-injury. Alien limb syndrome is an uncommon neurological disorder featured by uncontrolled and involuntary movements of a limb. Three variants of alien limb syndrome have been described: the anterior, featured by grasping of surrounding objects, the callosal, presenting with intermanual conflict, and the posterior, associated with involuntary levitation of the limb. Our patient suffered from an acute presentation of the posterior variant of the alien limb syndrome, resulting from an isolated thalamic stroke which was documented using 24-h computed tomography brain scan. Only one previous case of a…
Twitch interpolation during equal-intensity voluntary and electrically-evoked isometric contractions of the quadriceps muscle
2005
It has been suggested that, during contractions triggered by electrical stimulation, motor units are recruited in a reversed sequence compared to voluntary contraction. The classic view is that lar...
Microvascular blood flow changes of the abductor pollicis brevi muscle during sustained static exercise
2020
ABSTRACTA practical assessment of the health of the palm muscle, abductor pollicis brevis (APB), is important for diagnosis of different conditions. Here we have developed a protocol and a probe to utilize diffuse correlation spectroscopy (DCS) to characterize microvascular blood flow changes in the APB during and after sustained isometric exercise, during and after thumb abduction at at 55% of maximum voluntary contraction (MVC). Blood flow in the APB decreased during exercise in the subjects (n=13) with high MVC (n=7) and stayed constant in the ones with low MVC (n=6) suggesting that the mechanical occlusion due to increased intramuscular pressure exceeded the vasodilation elicited by the…

Pihlainen, K, Kyröläinen, H, Santtila, M, Ojanen, T, Raitanen, J, and Häkkinen, K. Effects of combined strength and endurance training on body composition, physical fitness, and serum hormones during a 6-month crisis management operation. J Strength Cond Res XX(X): 000-000, 2020-Very few studies have examined the impact of training interventions on soldier readiness during an international military operation. Therefore, the present study investigated the effects of combined strength and endurance training on body composition, physical performance, and hormonal status during a 6-month international military deployment consisting of typical peacekeeping tasks, e.g., patrolling, observation, a…
Influence of voluntary work intervention on the mood status of older volunteers
2012
The aim of this study was to investigate the positive and depressive mood changes in older volunteers after a three-month voluntary work intervention through a one-group experimental research design. The participants were drawn from the Volunteering, access to Outdoor activities and Wellbeing in older people (VOW) project. The participants were recently retired group, aged 50 and above (N=47, 42 female). Prior training sessions were arranged for the participants before the intervention period. Pre and post assessment of depressive mood was measured through applying the original form of Center for Epidemiologic Studies Depression Scale (CES-D) and positive mood was measure through the positi…
Reliability of transcranial magnetic stimulation and H-reflex measurement during balance perturbation tasks
2022
Following ankle movement, posterior balance perturbation evokes short- (SLR ∼30–50 ms), medium- (MLR ∼50–60 ms), and long-latency responses (LLR ∼70–90 ms) in soleus muscle before voluntary muscle contraction. Transcranial magnetic stimulation (TMS) and Hoffmann-reflex (H-reflex) measurements can provide insight into the contributions of corticospinal and spinal mechanisms to each response. Motor evoked potential (MEP) and H-reflex responses have shown good reliability in some dynamic muscle contraction tasks. However, it is still unclear how reliable these methods are in dynamic balance perturbation and corticospinal modulation during long amplitude balance perturbation tasks. 14 subjects …
Helsepersonells erfaringer og tanker om bruk av frivillige i palliativ omsorg
2017
Health care personnel’s experiences and thoughts on the use of volunteers in palliative care in a social perspectiveThe government of Norway is planning for the municipalities’ health care resources, including volunteering. The purpose of this study was to shed light on the experiences and thoughts of a group of health care personnel on the use of volunteers in palliative care in the community health care services, and to discuss the findings in a social perspective. Individual interviews were conducted with seven nurses and three nursing assistants. Using a qualitative content analysis three categories emerged: "The importance of organization, clarification and responsibility," "Qualificat…
Non-financial information: From voluntary to compulsory compliance. The state of the art in Italian context
2018
The issue of corporate communication is very relevant in the context of accounting literature. Historically, it has focused on economic and financial information, disclosured through the financial statements. Over time, complementary information, concerning the environmental, social context, intellectual capital, business model, has assumed greater importance. Consequently, the debate regarding the need for more advanced forms of reporting, which is able to compose the different dimensions of the process of value creation by the organizations, has been intensified. These trends have found in our country a specific regulatory constraint, such as Legislative Decree no. 254/2016, which introdu…
A study of international work camp volunteers' attitudes and experiences of English as a lingua franca
2014
Yhä useammalla nuorella aikuisella on omakohtaisia kokemuksia englannin kielen käytöstä monikulttuurisessa ympäristössä, esimerkiksi vaihto-opiskelun tai vapaaehtoistyön kautta. Kyseisissä tilanteissa puhuttu englanti poikkeaa monin tavoin oppitunneilla opituista ja natiivien käyttämästä englannista. Tutkielman aiheena on selvittää, kuinka Suomessa vuonna 2012 järjestetyille vapaaehtoistyöleireille osallistuneet nuoret kokivat englannin kielen käytön leireillä ja millaisia asenteita heillä on englannin kieltä kohtaan. Tavoitteena on selvittää, kuinka he asennoituvat omaan ja toistensa kielenkäyttöön, aksenttiin, natiivien kanssa viestintään, mukauttamiseen ja koodinvaihtoon ja millaisia kei…
Retirement Awareness as a Determinant of the Choice of Tools For Collecting Pension Capital
2018
The article deals with the problem of retirement awareness of adult citizens. Its purpose was to determine the level of this awareness and knowledge about the pension system, as well as to learn the motives of decisions related to the optional part of the pension system. In addition, the aim was to identify what voluntary forms of raising capital for the retirement are most often chosen, and which factors in particular make people to take action to secure their retirement future. The study established that the respondents negatively judge the effectiveness of the Polish pension system, do not have adequate knowledge about the functioning of the pension system and show little interest in add…
