Optical Field-Induced Mass Transport in Soft Materials

Abstract The dependence of the surface relief formation in amorphous chalcogenide (As 2 S 3 and As-S-Se) and Disperse Red 1 dye grafted polyurethane polymer films on the polarization state of holographic recording light beams was studied. It is shown that the direction of lateral mass transport on the film surface is determined by the direction of light electric vector and photoinduced anisotropy in the film. We propose a photoinduced dielectropfhoretic model to explain the photoinduced mass transport in amorphous films. Economical device for measuring thickness of a thin polymer film

An inexpensive device (about $2K) for thickness measurements of thin (<1 μm) polymer films has been constructed. The homogeneous film is placed on a bulk substrate and three semiconductor lasers of different wavelengths are used to measure the reflectances at normal incidence. The thickness can be deduced with typically 4–8 nm uncertainty.

Abstract In the last years, a new group of enzymes, so-called silicateins, have been identified and characterized, which form the axial filaments of the spicules of the siliceous sponges, consisting of amorphous silica. Silicateins are able to catalyze the polycondensation and deposition of silica at mild conditions (low temperature and physiological pH). By means of these enzymes it is possible for the first time to produce silica nanostructures biocatalytically, which opens new ways for construction of biosensors. The transient oscillatory behavior of the nonlinear response of a two-level electron-spin system is experimentally investigated in a sample of glassy silica with ${E}_{1}^{\mathcal{'}}$ centers (S=(1/2)) at microwave frequency at T=4.2 K. The transient regime, excited by an intense step-modulated radiation tuned to double-quantum (DQ) resonance, is monitored by revealing the second-harmonic (SH) wave radiated by the spins undergoing DQ transitions. An high-performance liquid chromatography method for determining inositol phosphate fractions was adapted to legumes. The validity of the method was assessed by estimating the following analytical parameters: linearity (linear response between 125 and 5000 microg inositol hexaphosphate (IP(6))/ml); instrumental precision and method precision (relative standard deviation, %) were 1.9% (IP(6)) for instrumental, and 2.5% (IP(6)) and 8.2% (IP(5)) for method precision. An accuracy was estimated by percentage recovery (72 +/- 3%). Polymeric materials pose a challenge for Monte Carlo simulations because of the widely spread length and time scales involved. Using large scale computer simulations we investigate the interfacial structure in a partially compatible polymer mixture. The problem is studied in the framework of a coarse grained lattice model - the bond fluctuation model on the simple cubic lattice, choosing N = 32 and lattice linear dimensions L × L × D up to 512 × 512 × 64. We employ a two dimensional geometric decomposition scheme to implement this algorithm on the CRAY T3E. The algorithm scales very well with the number of processors.
